Open House Session “Enabling Young for Better Career Option”
The Department of Adult Education faculty of Social Science University of Delhi
organized open house session on Enabling young for better career option on 26th Oct.
2012 in Arts Faculty University of Delhi with the objective of sensitizing and stimulating
youth for better career options in new millennium in radiance of Higher Education
Reforms and New Curricula for undergraduate students. The programme was to motivate
youth and make them equipped with new skills and curricula reforms. The strategy
adopted were interaction and open house discussion on the issue of career planning and
available options. More than 150 students and research scholars from different streams
participated in the programme. Dr. Rajesh , Head while introducing the topic said that the
university under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice- Chancellor started
curricula reforms especially at the undergraduate level. The Department trains students
on counseling and guidance and mentoring. Prof. Gireshwar Mishra, Professor Anand
Prakash, Professor Shankar Choudhary, UNESCO provided their input.
The session was chaired by Professor Grishwar Mishra from Department of psychology
faculty of Arts University of Delhi. Professor Mishra opined that the available career
options with young are quite diverse as compare to 20 years back. The present situation
demands interdisciplinary skills to excel in any profession. For this one need to equip
and know self what is happening in the global market scenario and in rural setting. With
the advent of new technology, ample opportunities available with youth it is important to
give proper shape for sustainable development. We need to equip our youngsters by
making them admirable in multiple skill for better future. Further he said that right career
choice at right time and proper judgment of one’s capacity and capability at
undergraduate level is necessary to make better future. Today the youngsters are
influenced by their peers and parents in selection and choice of career which leads to
terminal and ambiguous at the end of day and ultimately the society suffers. The society
needs political leadership by the vibrant youth with ability to think positively and
innovatively for the social upliftment and welfare of masses. Giving the example of big
20
business houses like Tata and Ambani, as they have created abundant proficient
opportunity for the new generation to come in different business field like Infrastructure,
Manufacturing, Gas exploration, Communication, Industries and Agriculture. There is a
need to create wealth from existing heritage we have with scientific approach. Further
giving the example of Patanjali yoga which was not recognized earlier is very popular
and part of our daily life.
Now a days everything is commercialized, every business house needs communication
and media approach to market their product according to the needs of society. For this
they take-up rigorous product research to meet the expectoration of people. So the basic
question is how to survive in this world, to grow, to develop, to improve? Giving further
example as I am the sole earner and I decided to move in particular way. The career
counselor help in identifying the ones strength and weaknesses . Just try to augment that
strength you have. It is very important to recognize the ability one have.
(Prof. Gireshwar Mishra, Prof. Psychology with Dr. Rajesh, Head)
Discipline oriented knowledge is vital as mathematics is important for organizing
information. Good communication skills, attentive listening, memorizing, registering and
then contemplating the matter. The discipline has to nurture sensual literacy which
become the part of knowledge , allowing them to identify their competencies one need to
explore the mind of young gamut population to avail the fruits of benefits, they know
21
about the globalization, market growths, global scenario that cannot be overlooked. How
china is moving in whole world, north and south korea having the same geographical
environment but one is growing ahead of others. In the present scenario individual takes
the advantage of institution and excel and does not think for the institution to develop.
Several questions were raised by the University Students about the new curricula of
undergraduate as how it is better than the previous or existing one. Sonam a post M.A
student raised the question as there is no support system for guiding student about their
career planning at university level. Anjali a post graduate students raise question as why
don’t we have skill based education in university system.
Learning is a lifelong process, education should be out-come based and is possible by
professional skills where the University role is pivotal opined by Pramod kumar a
Research scholar from Adult Education. Dr. Rajesh Head of Department Adult
Education concluded the session emphasizing on the Guidance and Counseling support
system should be available at University or College level to guide properly and timely for
better career option for the undergraduate student for gleaming future. It was decided to
undertake such interaction in future. Pramod Kumar, research scholar gave vote of
thanks.

development in the self-expression values of countries after inducing the
23

wherein India and Denmark can come together to create a knowledge bank by
way of researches, thus complying with the knowledge economy.
Today’s economy requires the investment in Human capital where the best
minds of the nation’s world over collaborate with each other to produce a

Future Highlights
Vision – 2017

The University-Grants-Commission in its policy of Higher Education recognized
Extension as the third dimension of the institution of higher education. The earlier two
dimensions are teaching and research. The Universities and Colleges having institutional
resources- Knowledge, Manpower and Physical, have an obligation to develop
sensitivities to involve the development of the community to overall and diverse learning
needs of all the segments of the people of the community. The third dimension is aimed
at meaningful and sustainable interaction between Universities & Communities.
The University-Grants-Commission (UGC) through its various Guidelines from 1977 to
2009 (XI Plan) provided opportunities to the Departments of Adult, Continuing
Education/Departments of Lifelong Learning & Extension to undertake teaching
(Undergraduate and Postgraduate, Short-term, Diploma, Certificate and self financing
courses), Research (Ph.D, M.Phil, Research Project & Evaluation), Extension &
Community Outreach (College & Community level). The subsequent Guidelines focused
on developing networking and partnership building with voluntary and corporate sectors.
The recent XI plan Guidelines authorized the Universities to develop university specific
programmes keeping in view the expertise of the faculty and local needs. The UGC also
allowed the Department to undertake innovative courses to generate new knowledge
through Research and Publication.
The XI plan guidelines of Lifelong Learning & Extension is reported in the statutory
bodies i.e. Academic and Executive Council of the University. The UGC allowed the
Department to explore other sources for raising funds in addition to the UGC Grants.
Conducting self financial courses is essential for the sustainability of the Department.
