A Message from the President
Dear Friends of Notre Dame High School,
I write today with a deep sense of gratitude and thanksgiving for all you do for the support and continuation of Notre Dame High School.
Gratitude is a very powerful force that has the capacity to expand our happiness, create life-long relationships and teach us the profound lessons that making the most of what we have results in having even more.
Notre Dame High School began 60 years ago, a dream of the people of the Southern Tier of New York and the Sisters of Mercy, to prepare young men and women, through education for the world in which they live. The pioneer sisters established the “Mercy” spirit which continues today and their slogan, “Watch us Grow” has indeed come true. Their mission endures today and our school is considered one of the finest schools in the state.
We continue to prioritize holding tightly to our Mercy Core Values of compassionate presence, service, respect for all, justice and hospitality – combining them with a spiritual environment on our campus, and at the same time, employing current academic strategies and technology.
It takes more, however. Our commitments and continued success depend on each and every one of you to keep us who we are and to assist our continual growth into who we want to be.
Thank you for your generous support. It validates our past, brings achievement to our today, and creates vision for our mission tomorrow.
I believe in more, and I believe in you.
With Affection,
Sister Mary Walter Hickey, RSMPresident

We are deeply grateful for your donations to the Legacy of Caring Capital Campaign. Your donations are vitally important to our school and we appreciate your generosity and willingness to help as we continue our journey into the future. Your gifts support our mission to prepare young men and women to continue their education and become strong, value-centered, contributing citizens, making the dreams of our Mercy Foundress, Catherine McAuley come alive.
To maintain enrollment, while continuing to attract new families, major repairs to the physical plant and school grounds have been initiated. Our facilities have been well used and are in continuous need of major upgrading. We have successfully completed the capital renovations in two of the three major areas of need: the school auditorium and the athletic facilities. We are currently seeking funding for the school boiler.
The current boiler system must be replaced as soon as possible. We seek to increase our boiler efficiency and provide significant savings on the school’s fuel costs. A new boiler system will provide more consistent temperatures from classroom to classroom, giving students a safe and comfortable learning environment.
In the area of Academic Excellence, the school continues to pursue funds to support Professional Development for Faculty, Recruitment and Retention of Quality Teachers and Technology Upgrades. Your support of these programs vital to our future is greatly appreciated.
We send a hundred thousand thank-yous to supporters of the Legacy of Caring Campaign which has raised over $4 million dollars.

Donor Restricted Donations
Gifts to Notre Dame may be designated by the donor to be used for specific purposes. For example, gifts may be restricted to a specific department, sports team, or academic club or you may choose to restrict your gift to one of our scholarships or financial aid funds. Making your annual gift to a specific fund allows the donor to choose the impact their contribution will have on Notre Dame High School.
Legacy of Caring Campaign
Annual GivingHonor Roll of Donors
The Notre Dame High School community is grateful for every contribution made to our Annual Fund. Donations made to the Annual Fund create the foundation on which we can continue to build our school. Your support enables us to provide a nurturing, challenging Mercy education while preserving the legacy of the past. Your generous response to the 2014-2015 Annual Appeal helped make Notre Dame what it is today and what will continue to be in the future.
We are blessed by the kindness and generosity of our donors and it is with our most sincere thanks that we acknowledge these gifts and offer special recognition to our Gift Club members.

Gifts of CashThis gift is usually made by credit card or check payable to Notre Dame High School and it is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. Donors may find that they are able to increase the size of their gift by extending payments on a monthly or quarterly basis until the end of the school’s fiscal year.
Gifts of Appreciated SecuritiesPublicly traded stocks that have appreciated in value and have been held for more than twelve months offer two advantages: First the donor pays no capital gains tax on the appreciation in accordance with the tax law changes in 1997; and second, the full current market value qualifies as a charitable contribution deduction.
Commemorative/Memorial GiftsGifts may be given to honor a specific individual, or to a commemorative memorial of a loved one. When a commemorative gift is received, the Office of Advancement notifies the honoree or the family of the deceased.
Planned GivingIn the life of schools, Notre Dame is still young, but it is important to plan for its future. One of the best ways for you to help us ensure Notre Dame’s longevity and map its future is through Planned Giving.
A planned gift is any major gift made in a lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate plan. Planned giving often allows individuals to make larger gifts than they could make from their annual income. By making a planned gift to Notre Dame you can make a difference.
These planned gifts include gifts by will, gifts which pay you income, gifts that protect your assets, gifts from retirement plans, gifts of life insurance, gifts by estate note. Gifts by Will are a type of bequest that may be for a specific sum, or for a specific percentage of an estate, the residue of an estate, or on a contingent basis. The estate will receive a charitable deduction for the value of the gift passing to Notre Dame High School.
Unrestricted bequests are the most useful type of bequest. This allows the funds to be allocated by Notre Dame wherever the need is greatest. With a restricted bequest you may designate that a bequest supports a special purpose.
If you intend to include Notre Dame High School in a will or a trust, or would like to discuss options regarding a gift please call Sister Mary Walter at 607-734-2267 or Attorney Steve Agan ’79, at 607-734-2271.
Opportunities for Giving
Every gift supports the margin of excellence that defines Notre Dame High School. Our students are direct beneficiaries.
Matching Gift CompaniesMatching Gift programs boost our Annual Fund and provide strong dollar support by doubling or even tripling donations. Many of these gifts made by alumni, parents, alumni parents and friends of Notre Dame are able to do more for our school thanks to these programs. Corporate matching gifts offer an exceptional opportunity for you to substantially increase your contribution to our campaigns and help us to reach our goal.
Cobblestone Blocks are available to purchase in the Joel Stephens
Memorial Park located at the south end of the school. Blocks are
available for $500 each. Contact the Notre Dame Advancement
Office for more information.

Michael Wayne ’78 is actively involved in many civic and service organizations which seek to improve the lives of others and develop a caring, vibrant community. His service to Notre Dame as a member of the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees, as well as a fund raiser extraordinaire is a special gift to our school. We appreciate his generous service to others – Catherine McAuley is proud of his work.
Michael D’Aloisio has served as Administrator, Athletic Director, Teacher, Coach and Friend at Notre Dame High School. In these roles he has been compassionate, caring, and sensitive, going out of his way to be there for those in need. His sense of community is strong and Catherine McAuley would enjoy his tales of service to others.

It is with great delight that we must correct an error in the last issue of our Reflections regarding Charles Casey, Class of 1972. Charles assured us that he is very much alive and has a great deal more to accomplish! Our most sincere apologies to Charles, and his friends & family for any anguish caused by our misprint.

Maloney Family Fund
The Maloney Family Fund was created in honor of public educators, Maureen Maloney and her son William Maloney, Jr.’98, who together have served area students in Elmira City School District classrooms for more than 42 years combined. Both Maureen
and Bill are model teachers who seek to provide every child equal opportunities for success, and both recognize that success may look different for each child.
The recipient of the Maloney Family Fund Scholarship is chosen by the Beecher Elementary Faculty. The recipient must be a graduate of Beecher Elementary who has demonstrated strong academic potential backed by a strong character and exceptional work ethic. The fund will be awarded every six years to a deserving youth, but if funds allow, more frequent awards may be available.
Donations to the Maloney Family Fund Scholarship should be directed The Community Foundation of the Elmira-Corning and The Finger Lakes, Inc..
While every effort is made to provide complete and accurate information, please realize that mistakes may occur. If your name should be listed in this Annual Report and it is not, or if your name is misspelled, please accept our sincerest apologies and contact the Advancement Office as soon as possible so we may correct your name in the future.
Please remember that this Annual Report covers donations made from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. If you have made a gift to Notre Dame and we received it at the end of the fiscal year ( June 30,2015), you will be recognized in the 2015-2016 Annual Report next year.

Team Puerto Rico 2015“Embracing the Mercy Mission”
Team Puerto Rico 2015
“July 11, 2015, a team of 36 students, teachers and parents departed for Ponce, Puerto Rico for a trip that mentally, culturally and spiritually we could not be fully prepared for. This trip pushed many out of their comfort zones in some way or form. We could not comprehend, and we will never fully understand, how this trip affected our lives and the lives of those we met. In Ponce, we repaired 9 homes. These were not homes that many in the United States would choose to live in. The walls of the homes that we scraped, primed, and painted were filled with termites and the plumbing was not of the best quality. Despite living in conditions of deprivation, the people we met in Puerto Rico were full of joy and warmth. We had the privilege of building relationships with these people. We went there to bless them, but we in turn were blessed by them. It was an honor to have this opportunity.” Abigail Fell-Dewalt’16
Team Puerto Rico is grateful for the tremendous amount of support from the Notre Dame community to bring this endeavor to fruition. Inspired by last year’s journey, 60 students, faculty, staff and parents will travel once again in 2016 to help those in need in Ponce, Puerto Rico to share Catherine McAuley’s mercy mission.
