3. Details of Chapter activities since last report
a. Chapter meetings:
January 2014 (chapter board meeting) April 2014 (chapter meeting) May 2014 (chapter meeting incl. OSA student chapter) June 2014 (Funlight planning meeting)
b. Joint SPIE‐OSA BBQ & networking event (September 13th, 2013)
The joint SPIE‐OSA barbecue and networking event was a big success with more than 100 people attending. The event improved the visibility of the chapter with students, e.g. potential new members. Additionally, this also gave our many PhD students at the department the change to get to know each other. For new PhD students getting to know the people around can be a bit of a challenge when they first arrive. Our yearly BBQ greatly improves their chance to network with other students and researchers.

c. Invited Lecture: Prof. Michael Larson (September 19th, 2013)
Prof. Michael Larson from Uni. of Colorado was our invited lecturer for the year 2012‐2013. He gave two
talks, one on an optical device that can fuse tissue together and the other was more general on
entrepreneurship. Both talks were quite interesting and well attended. We would like to thank SPIE for
providing us the funding so that we could arrange this event.

d. Team building event for board members only (November 29th, 2013)
The coming of the end of 2013 marked the end of our very successfull 2012‐2013 year in terms of the
number of events that we organized. We celebrated with a social event for board members only.
Furthermore we discussed what we should improve for the following year.
d. Fun light event (January, 16th 2014)
On January 16, 2014 the OSA and SPIE student chapters in association with DTU Fotonik and the Danish Optical Society invited all bachelor and master students to an evening event on optics and photonics for future perspectives. More than 90 students showed up for a fun evening with talks about the master programs at DTU Fotonik and the possibilities for working in the optics field in Denmark. A technical talk on high speed optical communication in optical fibers was given by Associate professor Anders Klausen from DTU Fotonik where he also gave a demonstration of how optical communication works in practice, which was a great success. Anders Klausen gave also several students a tour in the systems lab where much of the research regarding optical communication takes place. PhD student Sidsel Pedersen gave a short talk on different study lines that can be pursued at the Department of Photonics Engineering at DTU. After the talks the department invited the students for pizzas and beer where the students had the opportunity to ask PhD students and supervisors from the department about optics, possible projects, and general questions about the department and the life as a student.

e. Poster event (May 28th, 2014)
We co‐hosted a poster session with the OSA student chapter at our department, which allowed the
students to improve their presentation skills by presenting a poster on their latest research. This was a
great success and the best three poster/students could win different prizes. The judges were two
professors at our department.

f. Fun light event (June 19th, 2014)
The second Fun light event that we hosted was on June 19th and was once again strongly attended by both bachelor and master students with 50 students participating. This time Prof. Peter Uhd Jepsen gave a talk on his research, which is within terahertz technologies. While being technical the talk was also a rudimentary introduction into the field of terahertz technologies which was well suited for the level of the students. The talk was also followed by a nice demonstration on how time‐domain terahertz spectroscopy works in practice. Following the technical talk our vice‐president PhD student Alexandra Lupi gave a short talk on different study lines that can be pursued at our department. After the talk the students joined us for pizza and beer at the Dept. for Photonics Engineering where they could engage in discussion with students and research.
