West Chester Public Library had a successful 2014 with circulation of print and audio-visual materials up 2% over 2013 and ematerials (ebooks and downloadable eaudio-books) circulation increasing by 50% over 2013. This was the first year in the last five that circulation of materials from the Library’s physical collection has increased. At-tendance at Library programs offered in 2014 increased by 6% over 2013
The Library mounted a suc-cessful campaign to raise funds for the replacement of the out-door lift. The lift, increasingly out of service due to mechani-cal failure, serves those cus-tomers who cannot manage the steps at either entrance to ac-cess the Library. The campaign
raised over $17,000 with the hopes of winning a Keystone Grant from the state to round out the funds needed for the project.
Municipalities in the library’s service area made allocations in support of library services and programs. For 2014 the following municipalities allo-cated funds to the library:
Borough of West Chester Birmingham Township East Bradford Township Pocopson Township Thornbury Township, Ches-ter County West Goshen Township
Thank you to these municipali-ties and their residents for their continued support.

Fund Raising Success—Thanks to generous donors
2014 was a transitional year for the library’s fund raising and development efforts. In Sep-tember, Joanne Peskoff Bear joined the staff as Development Manager, a position created by the Board to support board and staff fund raising efforts.
The library’s two major fund raising efforts, the Annual Ap-peal and the Holiday Home Tour, brought in the bulk of the library’s donation income.
The Holiday Home Tour, now in its fourth year, included
homes in the southern portion of the borough. Over 600 ticket holders enjoyed the tour de-spite a wet, rainy day.
In addition, WCPL received donations in memory of Betty Coffey, Joe Eckman, Marilyn Lambert, Phyllis Magill. The library also received a generous gift from the David and Nancy Knauer Unitrust.
The library’s Summer Reading Club again benefited from do-nations made through the Commonwealth’s Education
Incentive Tax Credit program (EITC). EITC donors were: 1st Resource Bank, DNB First, Fulton Bank, and Susquehanna Bank.
The Lift Replacement Cam-paign, spearheaded by board member Betsy Beaugard, along with a possible Keystone Grant of from the state, will pay for a new courtyard lift.

non planned and presented story time sessions. Bridget Cannon continued presenting a weekly story time at the YMCA’s Oscar Lasko Center day care.
Volunteer Chuck Shaw contin-ues to work with children every Saturday in the Kids’ Chess Club as well as hosting periodic chess tournaments for chil-dren. Several of his students have competed in regional chess tournaments and won trophies.
Throughout the spring and summer, children were able to stop by on regularly scheduled days to read to trained therapy dogs as part of the depart-ment’s “Read-to-Me Dog” pro-gram.
ShopRite Registered Dietitian Natalie Ritchey offered 3 six-week nutrition and health goal-setting programs at the library. The programs, a good example of partnering with a local busi-ness, were popular and well-attended. The Library’s 3rd Wednesday Book Discussion participated in Longwood Gar-dens first Community Read project. The selection for this project was Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac.
A new program, Quilting @ the Library/Quilts for Kids, started in March. Hosted by Carol Koroluck, the group offers a monthly meeting for area quilt-ers, many of whom bring along their sewing machines and quilting tools for an afternoon of creating quilts for the Quilts for Kids project. These quilts are distributed to children in area hospitals who are suffer-ing from serious illness or abuse. The group also wel-
comes new quilters and those wishing to learn quilting.
The library offered the follow-ing individual adult programs in 2014:
Robin Black, author of Life Drawing, gave a reading from her book and dis-cussed her writing process. Chester County Book Company organized this author visit.
Local art historian and lecturer Fred Dixon pre-sented a program on Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt.
WCPL hosted several Sat-urday afternoon meetups for area knitters, crochet-ers and hand-spinners.
Health coach Lynn Rossit-er offered an evening pro-gram on healthy eating, which was well attended,
with participants asking for a similar program by Ms Rossiter in Spring 2015.
Wings for Success offered their “Build Your Profes-sional Image” for women re-entering the workforce. The program is part of PACareerLink services.
WCPL participated in the Pocopson Founders Day, the Hickman and Chester County Art Association’s Art of Caring community day, and Rep. Truitt’s Community Day and Senior Expo.
The book discussion group, now in its 18th year, continued to meet on third Wednesdays..
The library hosts twice monthly World Lit Conversation eve-nings for English language learners moderated by volun-teers from the Volunteer Eng-lish Program.
Callahan, hosted the Sixth An-nual Princess Tea; this partner-ship continues to be popular with both attendees and Miss West Chester University. The CCIU’s local Head Start teacher brought several of her families to the library for a tour and to sign up for library cards.
Staff also organized a “Pirate Program” for the fall and win-ter months. After reading a clue (changed bi-weekly), children have to find “Polly the Parrot” hidden somewhere in the Chil-dren’s Department. Children earn Pirate Coins and stamps on their Pirate Map as they discover Polly that can be trad-ed in for DVD rental coupons. The popular program’s objec-tive is to encourage library visits and establish a life-long habit of coming to the library.
WCPL’s story time specialists Meg Diskin and Bridget Can-
The 2014 Summer Reading Club theme was “Fizz, Boom, READ,” focusing on science, discovery and exploration. This summer, children could earn a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal depending on how many days during the 10-week program they had read for at least 30 minutes.
Of the 117 children who earned medals, 30 received their med-als from Mayor Comitta at a special ceremony on August 27. Medalists also received a cer-tificate of recognition from Rep. Dan Truitt. Cake and re-freshments followed the cere-mony and a number of parents shared their appreciation of the SRC with staff.
The Children’s Department offered special programs in 2014 in addition to the Sum-mer Reading Club. Miss West Chester University 2014, Molly

WCPL staff member Clara Kelly took over teen pro-gramming and collection development for the Young Adult collection. She organized a Teen Summer Read-ing Club which featured a weekly teens’ afternoon of crafts, games, and snacks in the Community Room. That program was popular enough to warrant continu-ing it during the school year as a regular Tuesday after school program, expanded to include “tweens,” gener-ally defined as 10 to 12 year olds. Ms Kelly visited sev-eral of the WCASD middle schools and East High School to offer library card sign ups to students.
Due to the popularity of the 2013 Harry Potter Party, Clara Kelly, Bridget Cannon, and Kristen Chelmow organized a 2014 Harry Potter Party. The party again featured a trivia contest based on the Harry Potter novels, Hogwarts house competitions, and “potion” making. Snacks featured Chocolate Frogs and other Harry Potter themed goodies.
Teens and Tweens found activities and books to
keep them busy
WCPL volunteers, who range in age from 14 to over 80, gave 2,453 (1.4 FTE) hours of service to their community by helping with a variety of library tasks. Volunteers shelve books, pull materials requested by customers at other CCLS libraries, repair books, and help with a variety of projects especially in the Children’s Department. Several volunteers also help staff the Lower Level information desk, assisting customers in using PCs, finding books, and using the online catalog. The regular volunteers, those who come weekly, are joined by many who volunteer for a few hours to fulfill high school graduation projects and others who complete community service requirements.
Also among our volunteers were West Chester University students who helped with programs and special projects. Nicole Raymond completed an internship with the library, assisting with weekly PR projects and social media updates. Five students from Prof. Gerardina Martin’s fall Social Entrepreneurship class completed a grant proposal to purchase a 3-D printer for the library as part of their class requirement. The proposal formed the basis of a grant application WCPL completed for Library Services and Technolo-gy Act (LSTA) funds for a 3-D printer.
We are grateful to all of our volunteers for their unstinting and cheerful help.

The Library weathered a five-day power outage in February 2014 – an electrical pole on Lafayette Street came down during an ice storm.
When the library re-opened staff had five days’ worth of materials to check in, all of which was re-shelved in under two days by several volunteers who came just to help with this huge job.
