On behalf of YWCA Hamilton’s staff and board of directors, we are proud to present the 2016-17 annual report, which highlights just a few of YWCA Hamilton’s many achievements from the past fiscal year. Continuing to embrace innovation, creativity, and excellence, we are pleased to report a successful fourth year of our ambitious five-year strategic plan.

During this fiscal year, YWCA Hamilton continued our commitment to providing affordable housing to the most marginalized people in Hamilton. In 2016, we announced our plans to reimagine our Ottawa Street location, which will potentially include affordable housing for women and their children. We acquired Phoenix Place, a second-stage home which has a long history of addressing homelessness and violence against women in our community. Carol Anne’s Place was piloted, a program to help keep women out of the cold during the winter months. YWCA expanded housing options for adults with developmental disabilities to provide on-site supports where individuals can live independently in their own apartments.

YWCA Hamilton recently launched The Turning Point Giving Circle, a new program that brings together like-minded and influential women in Hamilton to build a sustainable fund to support YWCA Hamilton’s programs and services. We also recognized the achievements of 68 individuals and four businesses at the 41st annual Women of Distinction Awards. Winners of the nine awards joined a powerful group of trailblazers who have taken awards home in the past.

As a multi-service organization, YWCA Hamilton supports all members of our community, from toddlers in our child care programs to seniors in our 55+ Active Living Centre. We continue to reach out to our community partners for support, and we are so grateful for the many investments the community has made through programs like Be the Recipe for Change and our kitchen and café renovation project. Please let us extend our gratitude to each of YWCA Hamilton’s supporters, including the following major donors: FirstOntario Credit Union, The Allen and Milli Gould Family Foundation, ArcelorMittal Dofasco, The Trillium Foundation, the Insurance industry, and Charlie and (the late) Bettina Campbell.

As you’ll read in this annual report, YWCA Hamilton has worked with many community partners to provide women, girls, and their families with the tools they need to succeed. We hope that you take the time to read about some of our highlights and achievements. We look forward to an exciting 2017-18 year ahead.

A Message from Denise Christopherson and Charlotte Yates

Now in the fourth year of our ambitious five-year plan, YWCA Hamilton continues to strive toward an innovative, fresh approach to service delivery to impact the lives of women, girls, and their families. The following strategic priorities outline just some of the highlights from the 2016-17 year.

2

Strategic Priorities

Strategic Priority A: Facilitate Opportunities and Enhance Services and

Supports for Women and Girls

In 2016-17, YWCA Hamilton’s Health & Wellness program expanded into the community to deliver customized fitness services for seniors, adult living communities, and workplaces. Our Fit@Work service offers fitness classes — including yoga, Pilates, tabata, and relaxing and stretching — that are designed to increase employee retention, boost morale and productivity, and positively affect stress management. Through the Seniors Peer Connector Program, YWCA Hamilton has continued its commitment to helping Hamilton’s senior population maintain independence and active living. With the help of volunteers aged 55+, the Seniors Peer Connector Program provides in-home social supports and assistance to isolated seniors to help them connect back into the community.

Strengthen Services and Supports for Women and Girls to Improve their Health and Wellbeing

We are grateful to the Allen and Milli Gould Family Foundation who generously agreed to fund another year of the Women’s Small Business Program. On October 28, 2016, after careful consideration, Phoenix Place passed operations to YWCA Hamilton to sustain the future of the program and to maintain the second-stage home. YWCA Hamilton and Phoenix Place are long-time community partners who have worked together at planning tables to end violence against women and to address a crisis of homelessness for women in our community. Now under YWCA Hamilton’s, Phoenix Place continues to assist women and children to rebuild their lives and find courage and strength to start over.

In winter 2016-17, YWCA Hamilton opened Carole Anne's Place, a pilot program funded by Hamilton's Out of the Cold program. During the coldest months of the year, the program ran in the auditorium of our 55+ Active Living Centre, providing women a place to stay warm on nights when women’s shelters are over capacity.

In January 2017, the Developmental Services department launched the new Supported Apartment Program in partnership with Homestead. This program enables young adults with developmental disabilities to live in their own apartments with on-site staffing supports in order to meet their needs.

Support Housing Solutions for Women

YWCA is a leader across the country in working to end violence against women and ending homelessness. YWCAs are the largest provider of shelter and housing for women in Canada. In Hamilton, YWCA has a long history of housing.

We are grateful to the Allen and Milli Gould Family Foundation who generously agreed to fund another year of the Women’s Small Business Program. This program assists 21 women who want to start a small business in Hamilton. There are 10 weeks of in-class business training including: marketing, short-term and long-term goal setting, insurance, legal and business plan creation and implementation.

As part of the Hamilton Community Foundation’s ABACUS project, the STEM Girls Club aims to support academic engagement and inspire girls to pursue future post-secondary educations and careers in STEM. The STEM Girls Club includes activities, discussions, and games that build on topics in school and foster the confidence needed to excel in these currently male-dominated fields.

SISTER Graduation

YWCA Hamilton launched the Road to Wellness Program for female Muslim Syrian refugees. The program helps women quickly get involved in the Canadian community and reduces many different barriers they might face. Activities include learning to swim, learning healthy tips for leading a healthy lifestyle in Canada, and access to our women-only fitness centre.

Strategic Priority B: Be a Strategic and Influential Voice and Presence

for Women and Girls

YWCA Hamilton continues to be regarded as a community leader that is often invited to sit at decision-making tables and to provide expertise on panels and forums. More than 10 staff members were active on 57 committees across the community.

Continue to Transform Systems that Negatively Affect Women and Girls

In April 2016, YWCA Hamilton celebrated our annual Totally Awesome Young Women’s Breakfast (TAYWB), which brought together more than 500 young women from high schools across the city. We also enhanced our networks through an increased number of Women of Distinction nominees, many of whom have since joined YWCA Hamilton’s Turning Point Giving Circle and other initiatives in the organization. YWCA Hamilton’s 7th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event raised close to $65,000 to help support YWCA Hamilton’s essential programs and services for women, girls, and their families. The event continues to raise YWCA Hamilton’s profile in the community and awareness about issues, including poverty and homelessness.

In 2016-17, YWCA Hamilton also increased our reach by increasing our social media following across various networks and by being covered 34 times by local media.

In November, YWCA Hamilton was proud to again partner with Mohawk College and McMaster University for the Leadership Summit for Women. This summit is an annual community-wide event that brings together women, trans* individuals, and allies from Hamilton to provide skills, space, and support for all participants to reach their full potential as individuals and as collaborative members of a community. Those who participate are driving the creation of a more just and equitable society.

Our Young Women’s Advisory Council provides a platform for young women in Hamilton to have their voices heard. It aims to bring young women together in ways that allow for safe, open discussion, providing an opportunity for growth, learning and to be part of something big in Hamilton. This year, the Young Women’s Advisory Council participated in Strong Girls, Strong World, an initiative aimed at empowering young women and girls to become leaders and agents of change in their communities and represent a diversity of girls nationwide.

Strategic Priority C: Inspire Women’s and Girls’ Leadership to Create

Strong and Resilient Communities

Strengthen the Leadership Capacities and Competencies of the Women and Girls we Serve

During the past fiscal year, YWCA Hamilton continued its belief in giving our volunteer and staff teams the tools and education they need to best serve our clients. Three YWCA managers were trained through Future Leadership Ready for Women at Mohawk College. Two managers were trained to deliver suicide intervention training. YWCA Hamilton also led employees through 50 training sessions, which included Trans-Inclusion Training and Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression (ARAO) training.

Strategic Priority B: Be a Strategic and Influential Voice and

Presence for Women and Girls

Develop Creative Sustainable Service and Program Models

In 2016, YWCA Hamilton established the Turning Point Giving Circle so women leaders in our community could collaboratively and actively make a difference in the lives of women, girls, and their families. Through a three-year membership, Turning Point Giving Circle members build a sustainable fund to support YWCA programs and services and present a financial award which recognizes the achievements of a woman who has participated in a YWCA program and is now making a difference in her life and in the lives of others.

In spring 2017, YWCA Hamilton’s At the Table Café opened to the public following a kitchen and café renovation project aimed at creating a social hub for our clients and members of our community to purchase and enjoy freshly prepared food. The kitchen and café renovation project increases our capability to provide meaningful training and employment for women. At the Table is a social enterprise catering, café, and wholesale initiative of YWCA Hamilton that creates healthy meals while providing training opportunities to women and girls.

YWCA Hamilton’s volunteer program continued to grow. In 2016-17, 255 volunteers (an increase of 18 percent over last year) contributed nearly 15,000 volunteer hours, supporting 17 programs. Our volunteers include older adults (51%), millennials (32%), Generation X (9%), and Baby Boomers (9%).

YWCA Hamilton also invested in IT improvements and assessments and increased our IT staff. Staff recognition events and activities continued to be integrated into operations to contribute to the corporate culture.

In 2016-17, YWCA Hamilton also launched 1st Biz® in partnership with FirstOntario Credit Union. This 16-week start up program is for entrepreneurs with little to no business experience. Small business owners will be set up for success by creating a detailed business plan, investigating creditable funding opportunities and be provided with networking opportunities. At the end of the program,

small business owners will be able to present their businesses to stakeholders interested in investing in small businesses. FirstOntario Credit Union also awards a $500 grant to participants who are approved for a business loan through this program.
