Letter from the ChairThis annual report highlights the accomplishments of the Agricultural and
Biosystems Engineering Department’s faculty, staff, and students from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017. This academic year was outstanding for our depart-ment. In the fall of 2016 U.S. News and World Report announced that our undergraduate programs where ranked #1 in the nation. Then in the spring of 2017 we received the news that our graduate programs were ranked #1 in the nation. I believe these rankings can be attributed to several factors including our obtaining new facilities back in 2014, the commitment of our faculty and staff to high quality education, research, extension and outreach, and the qual-ity of our graduate and undergraduate students. We are especially thankful for our new facilities which have helped us to recruit top-notch faculty, staff, and students. Over the past five years, our undergraduate numbers have increased by 37%, our underrepresented undergraduate enrollment has increased by 2%, and undergraduate female enrollment has increased by 4%. For our Biological Systems Engineering degree option, over 50 percent of our students are female. Overall department enrollment in the fall of 2016 hit an all-time high with 808 undergraduate students and 92 graduate students, for a total of 900 students!
We had two faculty hired this year. Dr. Joshua Peschel, an assistant professor in the land and water resources focus area started at ISU in January of 2017. Dr. Peschel is helping to teach our engineering capstone courses and will continue his research in human-infrastructure interaction, remote sens-ing, and robot-assisted data collection. John Haughery was hired in August of 2017 as a lecturer. John teaches our freshmen Solving Technological Problems course and the junior level Electric Power and Electronics for Agriculture and Industry course. New departmental support staff includes Elaine Phompheng in our student services office and Barbara Brown in our main office. Elaine is the first face you will see when you come into the student services suite. She manages student traffic, advisor scheduling, and provides accreditation documentation support. Barbara helps faculty with research post-award account management, as well as supports the depart-ment with other accounts management. Congratulations goes to Dr. Matthew Darr who was promoted from Associate Professor to Professor.
In the fall of 2016, our department underwent an external review. This review is required by the ISU administration every seven years. The purpose of the review was to assess the department’s accomplishments and future direction related to education, research, and extension. In preparation for this review, the department spent the previous academic year working to develop
our new strategic plan. Part of this effort was focused on conducting a SWOT analysis for education, research, and extension programming. A self-study report was prepared which included the SWOT results, data trends and future visioning. Five external peer-reviewers reviewed our self-study report and visited our department to view our facilities and to meet with our faculty, staff and students. The feedback from the reviewers was very complimentary on our accomplishments, but did focus on creative ideas for maintaining our program excellence and for becoming national and international leaders.
We added several new pieces of equipment into our teaching and research laboratories. These include a wire EDM in our Metals Manufacturing labo-ratory; two CNC lathes, two CNC 3-axis mills, and one 5-axis mill in our Advanced Manufacturing laboratory; and a fluid powered dynamometer in the Vehicle Power laboratory.
We continue to have a well-balanced research funding portfolio, with 33% funding from industry, 49% funding from federal agencies, and 18% funding from state, local, and nonprofit organizations. We reached an all-time high of over $12.8 million in research expenditures. Our extension faculty continues to make impacts within the state of Iowa, regionally, nationally and interna-tionally through educational/training programs, field days, developed fact sheets, popular press instances, and general stakeholder engagement. For the 2016 calendar year, our extension faculty organized 83 separate events serving over 5,500 people, delivered 191 extension talks, developed 31 fact sheets, had over 93,000 fact sheets downloaded and had over 66,000 views of their websites, podcasts, and Twitter postings.
Our department appreciates the dedicated work of our External Advisory Council members. This council meets twice a year with our faculty, staff, and students to provide meaningful feedback on our curricula, facilities, research and extension focus areas, capstone design projects and helping us to make ABE a welcoming department. You can see the EAC members and the organi-zations they represent on page 26.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this annual report. Please keep us informed about what you have going on in your world! You can learn more about our happenings through our social media platforms, our website, and our quarterly newsletter. Thank you for your support! I look forward to sharing all the great news from this current academic year!

ABE by the Numbers
Iowa State University’s agricultural and biosystems engineering program jumped another spot to NUMBER 1 in U.S. News and World Report’s national graduate school rankings released March 2017.
In September 2016, the undergraduate program at Iowa State University also climbed to the NUMBER 1 spot among public universities.
The achievement of #1 rankings was reached by dedication to the department’s mission and vision. The department’s faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, and scholars, are all engaged in and committed to teaching, research, extension and outreach. Research Overview
Our research teams conduct many projects that deliver life-sustaining and industry-changing impacts to citizens throughout the state, the Midwest region, the nation, and around the world. Our department ranks top in research and development spending among the nation’s agricultural and biosystems engineering departments at public universities. These investments totaled over $12 million in FY16.
While maintaining our traditional connection to agriculture, our faculty researchers are also developing alternative production systems, leading innovative research for renewable energy sources, developing value-added products and processes, and implementing new methods to improve air and water quality. The ABE department’s research platform is organized into five focus areas.
