Promote. Advocate. Connect. Educate.
2017-2018 Report
An initiative of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast MASC Chair’s Message
It has been my honor to step into the leadership role for the regional Manufacturers Association of Florida’s Space Coast (MASC) this year. I was privileged to serve on the steering committee that developed the vision for MASC in 2014 and I am pleased to see the concepts discussed during those sessions in place now. We remain aligned with our priority to promote manufacturing products, companies and careers. This year we emphasized the importance of telling the story of modern manufacturing with a goal of shifting perceptions and driving interest in manufacturing career paths. We introduced the “See Manufacturing Through New Eyes” campaign and enhanced our www.ManufacturingInBrevard.org website to further this message. And, we leveraged the national Manufacturing Month initiative with targeted outreach including a video of local MASC members sharing why they celebrate manufacturing. Additionally, we have elevated our efforts to connect manufacturers to each other and resources as well as the goal to provide educational opportunities. This year MASC
convened 4-member meetings and the MASC seminar series offered six topical business education opportunities for our members. We also enhanced advocacy efforts through facility tours for elected leaders and briefings of state legislative staff members. MASC is an initiative of the longstanding Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC) Industry Council, building on the council’s legacy as the regional core for manufacturing since the early 2000’s. I look forward to working closely with manufacturers throughout the region through this resource in the coming year. Sincerely, Julie Song, Chair - MASC Advisory Board / EDC Industry Council Partner DRB Packaging

MASC – Promote
Image and Attraction Campaign See Manufacturing Through New Eyes – this multi-media outreach campaign was rolled out in October 2017 telling the stories of those impacted by a career in manufacturing. The campaign overcomes negative perceptions about the industry effectively meeting objections with facts and examples from authentic stories, from real people working in manufacturing in Brevard. The campaign includes a targeted website
www.ManufactuirngInBrevard.org which features short videos of campaign participants. Accompanying print ads, billboards and radio further promote these stories and drive interest in the sector. The image and attraction campaign is used to promote manufacturing careers and the entry level Certified Production Technician training program available to local citizens.
Manufacturing Month in Florida & Brevard – October 2017
Governor Rick Scott issued a proclamation recognizing the contributions of the manufacturing sector to Florida’s economy in celebration of manufacturing month see the proclamation. Additionally, Brevard County Commission Chairman Curt Smith issued a proclamation in support of manufacturing month for the County (pictured) and City of West Melbourne City Council member Andrea Young introduced a manufacturing month resolution for the City. Several MASC manufacturing members
hosted open houses and connected with schools to promote the benefits of manufacturing to our economy and the opportunities for pursuing careers. Manufacturing Month is part of a national grass roots effort which began in 2012. We look forward to continuing to grow the Space Coast effort alongside MASC member companies each October…and all year long! The companies joined manufacturers from across the state on Friday, June 1st for the awards ceremony. Lockheed Martin Space is a Leadership Level Investor in the EDC and a Founding Member of MASC. Merritt Island Boat Works is a Corporate Level EDC Investor and Mack Technologies is a Founding Member of MASC. Promote Manufacturing Careers Aligned with national trends, in Brevard County less than 4% of existing workers in manufacturing are under the age of 25 demonstrating a need to place specific emphasis on a targeted effort toward a younger demographic. An October 2015 study by the Manufacturing Institute, in partnership with SkillsUSA and the Educational Research Center of America, found that 64 percent of (secondary) students identified personal experiences as having the greatest influence over their career decisions. As such, the implementation of this image and attraction effort includes secondary school student exposure to manufacturing career opportunities. The EDC has developed a third-party partnership with Junior Achievement of the Space Coast (JASC) to implement a joint venture Workforce Readiness and Job Shadow program for 9th and 10th grade students in Brevard Public Schools. The seven-week Workforce Readiness module concludes with hands on Job Shadow and a student project which tells the story of modern manufacturing through a video presentation. The videos will be integrated into the campaign to further communicate the positive message to parents, teachers, students and the community at large. During the reporting period the EDC and JASC implemented this program with local manufacturers and local high schools.
On December 4, 2017 Cocoa Beach High School students participated in a Job Shadow program at Space Coast manufacturing company, Craig Technologies (pictured above right). Additionally, on December 7, 2017 Merritt Island High School students participated in a Job Shadow day at Brevard County aerospace company, United Launch Alliance. (pictured left.) This effort introduces manufacturing careers through STEM education and connects students with a path toward direct employment and ongoing post-secondary
credentialing and technical training.
