Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Thank you for supporting the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Lubbock. I am grateful for the seeds planted and nourished by your previous Bishops, Archbishop Michael

Sheehan and Bishop Emeritus Plácido Rodríguez, CMF. As you read in my public letter regarding the finances of the Diocese, we are in great financial need, but more importantly, we are in need of a change of understanding. I am afraid we are either unaware of God’s blessings in our lives, or worse we do not know how to thank God for these blessings. I have called for a deeper understanding of the spirituality of stewardship throughout the diocese.

The Catholic Foundation is a powerful vehicle for exceptionally generous individuals and families like you to witness to the spirituality of stewardship. As stewards of God’s gifts we are not passive beneficiaries. We are called to cooperate with God in our own redemptions and in the redemption of others. We are obliged to be stewards of the Church—collaborators and cooperators in continuing the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, which is the Church’s essential mission.

The United States Council of Catholic Bishops teaches that “As Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.” As you reflect on this, know that I will not take you where I have not been. As a parish pastor I found great joy in leading my parishioners on their stewardship journey. I look forward to leading you on this journey as well. The journey began last year when I pledged transparency of diocesan spending. I have and will continue to honor that pledge. I appreciate the feedback I received regarding my aforementioned letter. This year on our journey, join me in a prayer of awareness. Let us pray we are aware of God’s blessings in our lives and can offer an act of generosity in thanksgiving for those blessings. Pope Francis reminds us that, “God asks everything of us, yet at the same time he offers everything to us.” He has given us everything we need for a steward’s journey; may we find the courage to return those gifts in abundance. May God bestow His blessings upon you.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert M. Coerver

A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP

As Catholics we gather often. We gather around the Eucharistic table every Sunday for Mass. In Lent we gather around the cross. In Christmas we gather around the manger. Our faith calls us to gather our love of Christ and share it with the world.

S ince 1987 the Catholic Foundation has answered the Church’s call to gather as it

brings together generous Catholics dedicated to leaving a legacy for the Catholic Church to carry out its mission in West Texas.

At the Sermon on the Mount Jesus tells us the Parable of the Talents. In this lesson he calls the servant who buried his talents a “wicked and lazy servant.” Here we learn that Jesus expects growth, he expects our gifts and blessings to multiply.

In its thirty years in existence, the Catholic Foundation has tripled in assets, through ongoing donations and investment gains. Today the Foundation has $3 million in invested assets.

As Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. When we arrive at the Kingdom will we bring God

the blessings he gave us during our lifetime? Or will we bring an overflowing basket of the multiplication of our gifts through the generosity we shared while here in Earth?

Only after decades of gathering and growing did the Foundation’s leadership feel comfortable giving proceeds from the investments in 2000 in the form of grants. The year 2017 revealed the great financial hardship in the diocese. Bishop Coerver needs the Foundation to gather, grow and give in a way that supports the $700,000 parish support burden on the diocese.

GATHER. GROW. GIVE.

LEGACY SOCIETY

The gifts made from this society of members supports the annual and long-term needs of the churches, schools, and ministries of the Diocese of Lubbock. The Foundation seeks to build the Legacy Society’s total assets to $17 million. With a 4% distribution from assets to parish, school, organization and diocesan grant recipients each year, the Foundation is demonstrating how endowments make a difference.

Recognition in the Legacy Society requires a gift or pledge of $10,000 or more to establish a Named Fund or a statement of intention by an individual or couple to provide a planned gift at this level and above to the parish, ministry or school of the donor’s choice. If you have listed the Foundation in your will, please let us know so that we can add your name to our Legacy Society.

WHAT DO DONORS DO?

Donors help kids go to Catholic school. They give Catechetical

Parish leaders the supplies they need to teach and evangelize. When the wind is strong, they help fix the roof of an old church. When a rural community is underserved, they help strengthen the church’s presence. They help take care of the elderly. They help care for the impoverished. Wherever the community of the Diocese of Lubbock is in need, they respond.

Over the last 30 years, our donor’s generosity has enabled The Catholic Foundation to pass along $1,167,000 with results that have touched every person in almost every parish.

In 2017, thanks to the generosity of our donors, The Catholic Foundation gave a record breaking $108,000 in grants to worthy churches, schools and nonprofit institutions in the Diocese of Lubbock.

An endowment fund in the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Lubbock, Inc. is a donated gift that is invested to produce ongoing income for a parish, school or Catholic agency in the Diocese of Lubbock. An endowment is an excellent way to honor or memorialize an individual or family with a scholarship, a parish program, or a personal perpetual gift.

Types Of Endowment Funds

RESTRICTED ENDOWMENT FUNDSAs a restricted endowment fund, the gift supports the intent of the donor and ensures that the fund is designated for a specific purpose. These funds can be made as estate bequests, one-time or on-going donations. Whatever meets your philanthropic goals.

UNRESTRICTED ENDOWMENT FUNDSUnrestricted endowments allow the Foundation optimum flexibility in responding to grant requests. They are funded by donors who wish to support the Foundation’s grant program, and overall operations. These funds can be made as estate bequests, one-time or on-going donations. These charitable gifts are not restricted to a particular purpose and make up a majority of the unrestricted assets.

PARISH ENDOWMENT FUNDSThe Catholic Foundation exists to support the diocese and its parishes. Create a parish endowment fund designated for the parish(es) that hold special meaning to your family. Allow the Foundation to steward your donations by maintaining an investment portfolio, hiring an advisor, investing according to Catholic Values and distributing investment gains to your parish in perpetuity.

In 2014, the Bishop PlácidoRodríguez Seminarian EducationFund was established by the boardof Catholic Foundation.

Because of Bishop Emeritus Rodriguez’s long-standing work for vocations to the priesthood, he desired that the fund provide ongoing revenue to educate seminarians studying to become priests in the Diocese of Lubbock.

Since that time, the following stewards have given generous gifts to the Bishop Plácido Rodríguez, CMF, Seminarian Education Fund to honor our beloved Bishop Emeritus during his retirement by providing ongoing revenue to educate seminarians studying to become priests in the Diocese of Lubbock.

Thanks to a $50,000 challenge grant from the Catholic Church Extension society, along with the generosity from the list of stewards, the Bishop Plácido Rodríguez, CMF, Seminarian Education Fund has reached $150,000. The initial three-year campaign has come to a close with most stewards completing their pledges. Now, as this servant to the Church of Lubbock enjoys a blessed retirement, the fund will continue to grow through additional gifts made in his honor.

The fund will continue to accept gifts in any amount at any time. Should you desire to make a larger gift to the endowment, we invite you to consider a three year commitment to the fund. These may be paid on an annual, quarterly or monthly basis. Gifts to the endowment are permanently restricted for seminarian education, are tax deductible and will be acknowledged on the foundation website and in the South Plains Catholic. Bishop Rodriguez will be notified that you have made a gift to the fund in his honor.

Decisions

Applications will be reviewed and approved by the Catholic Foundation Board of Directors at its Annual Meeting in June. Parishes will be notified of decisions and will receive grant funds no later than June 30. In order to protect the assets of our generous donors, the Board follows a spending policy for annual grant distribution. Therefore, the amount of grant funding provided each year may vary according to investment portfolio gains or losses.

Follow Up

Grant recipients are asked to provide documentation of the completed grant project in time for the annual membership Winterfest dinner. Recipients are also encouraged to attend the Winterfest dinner in order to thank our generous membership who makes the Foundation grant program possible.
