MISSION AND VALUES

Victory College is an independent Christian College and a part of the educational arm of Christian Outreach Centre Australia, and locally of Victory Church, Gympie. The College is co-educational from Kindergarten through to Year 12. In a supportive environment, Victory College aims to deliver excellence in teaching and learning for our students within a broad, well-balanced Christian curriculum, which is complemented by community involvement and co-curricular activities.

Victory College was established in 1983 and in 2017 the College had 529 students across Prep to Year 12 and a further 20 Kindy students. Our students are drawn from a number of areas including Goomeri, Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach and Cooroy.

2017 saw the Official Openings of our Final Primary College classrooms and our Secondary College Hospitality Centre. The buildings were officially opened by the Honourable Tony Perett MP and Pastor George Miller Exectuive Chairman of the Board of Victory College.

Our Mission is “To equip each student to live a purposeful life”.Finding and pursuing our God-given purpose is the key to a valuable and rewarding life. As a result we find meaning in belonging to something bigger than ourselves; we find satisfaction through the accomplishment of our highest potential; reward through positive relationships by caring and giving to others; and joy in having our life’s goals aligned with our gifts and talents. This is built on Victory College values of “Understanding - Honour - Faith - Service – Excellence” We value ‘Understanding’ as part of our core business and as the essential process in the journey from knowledge to wisdom. The values of ‘Honour’ and ‘Service’ are universal and timeless adhesive agents of human society and therefore paramount in raising citizens and leaders of our new generation. The value of ‘Faith’ is what makes us a distinctively Christian school and we continually see lives changed with the positive effects that this value entails. Finally, the value of ‘Excellence’ has always been an integral part of the College’s history. In conjunction with the specific combination of the other shared core values this is what defines the “Victory Way”.

I present to you this annual report, showcasing the many achievements of our students, of whom we are so proud. Equipping these young people’s minds, souls, bodies and spirits for a purposeful life is our core purpose and the reason we provide:

All of Victory College’s current and future strategic projects align to these four focus areas.

All curriculum from Prep to Year 10 was aligned to the Australian Curriculum and developed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). Study programs in the Senior Years are accredited and monitored by QCAA subject review panels, leading to recognised certificates such as the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and Overall Positions (OPs).

Victory College offers a broad program that includes traditional academic subjects, vocational education and training (VET), extension subjects through university partnerships and extended co-curricular choices. All subjects are framed with an understanding of a Christian worldview.

Daily Five relates to 5 key areas of English: Reading to self, Reading to someone, Listening to reading, Working on words, and Working on writing. Reading strategies are developed through the four areas of (CAFÉ) Comprehension, Accuracy of words, Fluency of reading/writing and Expanding of vocabulary. The program strives to develop independent learners where students develop “stamina” for learning and focusing on the task at hand. Initially introduced in Year 6, the success of the program (some students gaining two years reading age) led to it being implemented from Years 3-6 in 2018.

Year 6 students are trained in Bridge Builders, which is a whole school approach to equipping children to be resilient, effective communicators and empowered to deal with everyday conflict and reduce bullying. The Year 6 students were selected to be mentors to support the lower primary students during their lunch breaks and to positively resolve conflicts. All Primary teachers have professional development in Bridge Builders concepts to assist all students to be resilient and effective communicators when dealing with conflicts.

1 to 1 BYOD (bring your own device) was introduced from years 7-12. Students were safeguarded through robust security software and reliable wireless access. Text books for Secondary College are now online using Jacaranda ebooks. Primary College integrated new online learning, such as Literacy Planet and Scratch and Mathletics using desktop computers, class iPads and the Computer Lab. Robotics and a new STEM hub also were introduced.

Victory College continues to provide the opportunity for students to develop valuable employability skills. Senior students have educational choices featuring alternative ways of studying and engaging in learning. These options are available to assist with the transition from College life to work life.

Students can study a wide variety of certificate courses, which are nationally recognised, and QCAA approved. They are also able to access TAFE courses.

Design & Technology classes commence in Year 7. Students learn to manage the properties of wood and acrylics and learn about the basics of technological design, producing a wide range of constructed pieces of work.

Part of the alternate pathways undertaken at Victory College allows students to participate in Design Technology with an automotive elective. The senior students this year have completed and had opportunity to race a speedway car at the Gympie Mather Mountain Speedway events. This has been a valuable subject that has seen many of our students link their learning with Experts from the region that have assisted them in learning skills and building an understanding of this area.

Our students are experiencing new technologies including virtual reality, augmented reality, programming, robotics, drone piloting, where some of our Middle School, drone “experts” shared their skills and knowledge with Primary students within the region. The students have also worked on 3D printing of designs.

Horticulture, fencing and cattle raising/handling are a few of the learning experiences offered in this subject offered in Years 7-10. Students participated in the Hook and Hook competition.

Our new Hospitality centre opened in 2017 and allowed students to continue to develop skills in a commercial kitchen setting, complete with a full size cold room and combi oven with front of house service. In 2018 a Cert I and II was offered in hospitality.

MUSIC

EQUESTRIAN

Music is offered to all students as a compulsory subject from Prep to Year 6, extending to the well-acclaimed and highly awarded junior and senior vocal choirs or the regularly performing chapel band. As an elective subject in Year 7 to 10, music includes the latest media technology enabling studenrs to record their own compositions in the College’s sound studio.

EQUESTRIAN QUEENSLAND INTERSCHOOL

This year we had riders competing in showjumping with two students reaching the Interschool State Championships and one student winning their section.

INTERSCHOOL FRIENDLIES

This year there were three (non-EQ) interschool events in our area (the friendlies); St. Andrew’s Showjumping Day in May, Fraser Coast Interschool Equestrian Competition in August AND Matthew Flinders Showjumping Competition in October.

Again our students equipped themselves to a high standard winning the Fraser Coast schools competition, that included over 60 competing school, for the sixth year Victory won first place

NON-SCHOOL EVENTS

Victory College students also excelled in Pony Club, Campdrafting, Barrel racing, Western / Quarter Horse events, Polocrosse, Endurance Riding and other fields. The College conducted 55 after school training events during the year on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

MYKINDY AT VICTORY

CHAPLAINCY

ANZAC DAY

A kindergarten program for students in the year before Prep began in 2012. MyKindy at Victory is a modern long-day-care kindergarten for students from 3 to 5yrs of age, co-located on the grounds of Victory College* in Gympie. It has fun facilities and the same guiding values that Victory College has become known for. Class sizes are a maximum of 30 students attending on a flexible schedule from one to five days per week. MyKindy at Victory kids get prepared for a successful start to school, develop a love for learning, make friends and develop skills useful for their lives.

Chaplaincy at Victory. Seeing students start their faith journey has been so exciting, as we aspire to equip every student to live a purposeful life. To support students who have made a commitment ot Christ in their Christian faith a new discipleship program was introduced by the Chaplains. This program equips them with the knowledge to continue building a strong relationship with God. Primary students have performed at Chapel and inspired each other to walk in a Christian value system building on the College core value of faith.

A Chaplains role is to support, pray, give encouragement and assist students to continue productively with their schooling. Every student is valued here at Victory College and reassured of their worth, future and hope in Jesus Christ.

This year, Victory College students once again demonstrated core values of Honour, Service & Excellence through their participation in a range of Anzac Day events. All of the students who attended should be proud of the way that they represented themselves and the school community. In Gympie, students attended the Dawn Service, the Normanby Hill Remembrance Service and then marched in Mary Street as part of the Anzac Day parade. Students in Tin Can Bay also participated in their local community march and, for the first time, Victory College was represented at the Rainbow Beach March.

OPTI-MINDS CHALLENGE

A number of students, parents and teachers arrived at the local park to assist in Clean up Australia Day.

Three teams competed in the Opti-Minds challenge with one team winning first place and qualifying for state titles, while another team obtained second place.

2018 was another great year for Victory College Rugby.We competed in a range of competitions and one-off friendly matches throughout the year.Some of the highlights from both rugby union and league included:• Fraser Coast Rugby 7s• Justin Hodges NRL 9s• Broncos Challenge• Gympie Hammer rugby 10s• Friendlies against Fraser Coast Anglican College, St Patrick’s College and James Nash State high.

Our College supported this day with students attending to assist on the day. The Year Six students worked hard on the Friday to pack the 700 event bags to support the event organisers.

Four teams; Victory Fire, Victory Flames, Victory Sparks and Victory Squirts played incredibly throughout the year, with three of our teams becoming minor premiers at the end of the season! Victory Fire continued to do our College proud in the Grand Final, winning the overall title for their grade. Our teams were supported by our wonderful coaches.

Other areas where our netball girls excelled in competition was on the Sunshine Coast where we had two teams compete and in the Vicki Wilson Competition. On the Sunshine Coast, our two teams played throughout a long, hot day, doing our college proud and playing to their absolute best! We are incredibly proud of every student who has been a part of our netball teams for 2017.

Through our hardworking volunteers of the Parents and Friends Committee the College was able to hold successful fundraising activities and events. 2018 was a very successful year with the P and F running many fundraisers. This year $47 174.57 was raised through family sponsorship and fundraising events- Mother’s day stalls, pie drive, Father’s day stalls, and the Bush Dance.

Victory College is a fantastic school. All teaching staff (all staff actually) have been amazing with our family.

Couldn’t be more proud to enrol my child in this school. In my opinion it is overall the best in the region. The range of facilities alone are outstanding, and having such presents a broad range of studies to the students. Exactly what we were hoping to find in a school; a safe, caring environment which provides a multitude of avenues for learning opportunities.

We feel we are blessed to have been able to send our child to such a wonderful school.
