Council’s outlook on membership dues is to provide value for services while allowing for a small contingency. Dues were increased by $25 in 2015 and remain unchanged for 2018 resulting with Manitoba having one of the lowest dues when compared nationally. While membership with CTTAM is market driven, it is no wonder that 70%* of the membership receive their professional fees as an employee benefit. For those who pay their own dues, you can claim a rebate on Line 212 of your T1 General Tax Form. (* derived from the 2018 Member Salary Survey)

CTTAM President’s Report Kellie J Orr, CD, CET, RCDD, CTS, TPM, IntET(Canada)

It has been a pleasure to represent the Certified Technicians and Technologist Association of Manitoba for the past two years. I have appreciated the opportunity to represent the members of CTTAM. As I pass the torch of our organization over to Andrew Procca, CET, President-Elect, I look forward to assisting with initiatives that support our membership. Membership has remained steady through this year at approximately 3,100 members. The Board has engaged in a strategic planning initiative with input from a large segment of our members. The CTTAM staff, Robert Okabe, CET, IntET(Canada), Cathy Penner and Anita Walcer should be commended for consistently innovating and modernizing our administrative processes. Our new association management software is now up and running smoothly. We transitioned our association management software to a new provider and our website was revamped to allow for better service to our members. Some of the new things that site now offers is the ability to have web-based continuing education opportunities and the ability to track your education. CTTAM’s Executive Director, Robert Okabe, CET, IntET(Canada), President-Elect Andrew Procca, CET and I, attended several events: The ASSTBC Gala Awards Dinner in Vancouver; the Red River College Technology Awards Dinner; the Tech Nova 50th anniversary AGM in Halifax; and the NBSCETT 50th Anniversary AGM (CCTT) in Fredericton. I am pleased to report that there were concrete discussions with all ten provinces in regards to working towards reconciliation of the two National Organizations. CTTAM will continue to have dialogue with our provincial counterparts to unify the profession across Canada. CTTAM will also continue to hold regular meetings with other associations such as the Association of Consulting Engineers Canada (ACEC) and Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba as well as we will continue to reach out to other like-minded associations with the intent to promote our association and to collaborate on items of common interest. It was my pleasure to present the CTTAM sponsored small project award at the ACEC Manitoba Awards of Excellence in Consulting Engineering Gala. This event showcased the excellence of Manitoba based engineering and highlighted the contribution of many of our members who work for consulting engineering companies. The Specified Scope of Practice application process on the Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba website is now open. Several CTTAM members have started the application process and their

applications should be complete in the very near future. I encourage you to start the process. The implementation of the specified scope of practice license in Manitoba requires Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba to honour the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) and recognize individuals who have already been granted a limited license in another Canadian province. The specified scope of practice license provides a pathway to limited licensure for individuals with a non-traditional academic background. This category of license recognizes the combination of education with extensive experience as potential qualification to qualify for practice in a specific scope of engineering or geoscience. We continue to invest in opportunities to engage the next generation of Technology Professionals through partnerships with Skills Manitoba, Red River College, among others. I encourage CTTAM members to get involved with our association, mentor a young professional and promote our profession. We need your help to grow our profession. I would like to thank the Board, committee chairs, committee members, administrative staff and Andrew Procca, CET, PMP, President-Elect, for their amazing dedication and I look forward to the challenges we will face together as an association.

Executive Director & Registrar’s Report

In 2018, CTTAM celebrates its fifty-third year by looking to its membership for guidance on developing our strategic plan for the next few years.

The leadership from the CTTAM Board of Directors has the foresight to plan for the future health of the organization by consulting with our members and stakeholders to develop a strategic plan to meet their needs. Once completed, we can begin to budget, develop and execute the workplan.

2018 marks one year of registration utilizing the Technology Registrations Canada (TRC) website which allows applicants to apply for membership and file reviewers to perform continuous assessments year-round. The introduction of competency exams allows C.Techs to reclassify to C.E.T. All of these changes were a result of CTTAM’s ongoing relationship with the Office of the Manitoba Fairness Commissioner which strives for the fair consideration of individuals applying for registration. CTTAM is committed to fair registration practices.

Maintaining relationships with our strategic partners is stronger than ever. CTTAM continues to work with the Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba. CTTAM member interest in obtaining a limited engineering licensing, Eng.L designation, exceeded our expectations and the first licensee should be issued before year-end.

We continue our strong relationship with Red River College and President Orr and I visited the University College of the North in the Pas to expand CTTAM’s outreach beyond Winnipeg. Additionally, I have visited Assiniboine Community College in Brandon which has resulted in additional scholarships being offered to Engineering Technologist and Technician programs.

CTTAM membership is market driven and the C.E.T. and C.Tech. designations are the brand asked for by employers. Periodically we receive information that individuals, who are not entitled to do so, are using CTTAM designations. CTTAM’s Certified Members have met stringent criteria and our designations are protected by The Certified Applied Science Technologists Act. CTTAM deals swiftly with those individuals who indicate that they are CTTAM Members but who are not on CTTAM’s Register of Active Members.

Each year I comment on how fortunate CTTAM is to have a strong and dedicated volunteer base which helps meet the needs of the public and our Membership. This year is no different and CTTAM would not be the successful organization that it is without these individuals. I would also like to express my appreciation to Anita Walcer, Administrative Assistant and Cathy Penner, Registration and Member Services Coordinator, for their dedicated work during the year.

Respectfully Submitted,

Robert Okabe, C.E.T., IntET (Canada) Executive Director & Registrar
