A community that believes all children regardless of race, religion, or economic status should have the opportunity to receive the best education available.

STS ANNUAL REPORT 2018

W elcome to our 2018 Annual Report. We are grateful for your interest in the critical work of STS Academy in Pittsburg, California.

Our Company Sites, School Sites and City Park Sites are special places that celebrate childhood and help youth realize their full potential. Each day before and after school and all day during the summer and school breaks, our staff ensure that each student participant feels heard, valued, loved and understood.

2018 was a very active year highlighted by an $80,000 grant from Wells Fargo to expand our mentoring program; in collaboration with the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area, our students’ participation in a national convention in Las Vegas; coding classes and Stride online Academic support at The Learning Center. We collaborated with Pittsburg Police Activities League to provide the San Francisco Giants Junior Giants baseball program (age 5-13) to our community and SAT preparation class for our college bound high school students. In collaboration with the Pittsburg Kiwanis Club we are able to provide the Camp Kiwanis summer program. The gardening and nutrition programs are provided due to a solid partnership with UC Davis. Our external CPA Company audit of bookkeeping and financial procedures performed by Michael R. Blanks CPA.

The most cherished memories are always related to the young people we serve and we commit ourselves too. Featured on the following pages are stories about youth in our programs.

STS’ collaboration with the Pittsburg Unified School District has led to a renewed standard of excellence and innovation for our youth. Graduation rates are up sharply, high school before and after school programming have increased by over 50%, middle and elementary school sports programs are operating at their absolute highest level ever. Programs operate from 15 separate sites, serving approximately 1,600 students each school day. Transportation is provided to and from various sites and for all sports competitions.

In addition to the expansion of our youth and teen programs, we’ve seen an increased impact on parents through our Family Outreach Initiative. Our network of partners has grown, which has increased our collective impact on the community. Our Family Outreach Initiative reinforces the impact of several organizations by pooling resources, and creating a comprehensive and unified effort to tackle the large scale issue of breaking the cycle of poverty and strengthening the family unit.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, and staff, we thank everyone who contributes their time, talent and financial resources to help make sure that our students are ready for life when they leave us at 18.

STS ANNUAL REPORT 2018

STS Academy shapes minds, builds character and inspires youth to dream big and venture towards great horizons. STS Academy continues to give students a chance, a chance for success, especially those considered at-risk academically through mentorship and tutoring opportunities to support them to gain mastery of academic concepts that they are being held back by.

STS Academy helps break barriers, build bridges and stop at risk students from falling through the cracks. This is the reason why STS Academy is and continues to be the crown jewel for students and families in the City of Pittsburg. STS Academy was founded upon and continues to stand on principles and values that puts the needs of our students first. STS is impacting the lives of the students that are emerging as future leaders of our community. For me particularly, STS Academy added to the limited support system that I could rely on to support me in being successful throughout my High School and College life. This is what a model organization is

founded upon and continues to thrive by. I have been and will always be supportive of STS Academy for all that this organization has given me and many other students.

De’shawn Woolridge, Pittsburg Unified School District Board Member

I have had the pleasure of partnering with the STS Academy in my role as the principal of Pittsburg High School for the past ten years. This program has provided a variety of opportunities for our students as part of our after school program. These opportunities have included culinary arts, forklift certification, drivers education, digital recording and auto shop to name, but a few. Our partnership with the STS Academy has allowed us to extend our after school offerings beyond the traditional academic programs. Many of our students have chosen careers and/or postsecondary education options based on their exposure to the wide-range of programs offered through the STS Academy in our after school program. I look forward to partnering with the STS Academy for many years to come!

“Hello, My names is Mercedes Valladon and I am a student aid at the high school and also a parent of an high school student. I just want to say that STS Academy is a great place for

students to learn new skills that are not offered during the regular school day. When I heard about all the terrific programs that were being offered, I immediately signed my daughter up and also wanted to join the team. As a parent, we haven’t seen things like this since I was in

high school, and I am so happy it is here for the students. I hope it never goes away either. This program is great for our youth and community!”

—Mercedes Valldon, Pittsburg High- Student Aid

Pittsburg High School college bound students are guided by a credential high school staff member who assists in college preparation ACT and SAT prep classes are available as well as college and career applications assistance. Assistance with admissions applications, grants, scholarships and loans are available. We provide classes that assist with technical skills preparation these classes include barbershop, beauty shop, cosmetology, photography/video, culinary, gardening, auto and more. Our mentoring programs are a combination of adult to H S student and student to student (high school to elementary). We provide transportation to all off-site locations, activities and field trips. Programs for parents including field trips. Internships for summer work employment opportunities. Around the clock security is provided at the school and off site locations.

At Pittsburg High we offer a variety of different programs that are truly the highlight of our actual program. Some of the more popular programs that we offer is our Cosmetology class and Barbershop class. We have introduced these programs to open up students minds as alternatives to college. Not all students want or can afford to go to a four-year college, but some can afford a vocational program. In both programs students are taught the basics and are able to apply it to their everyday lives. Also, our students from the cosmetology program were offered to do makeup for some of our dancers for a big performance that they did. And it came out amazing. These students are learning that practice makes perfect in all aspects of their lives no matter what it is. They are excited to have STS Academy apart of Pittsburg High.

JUNIOR GIANTS 2018 SEASON RECAP

JUNIOR GIANTS BASEBALL

Junior Giants is a free, non-competitive 8 week coed baseball program for youth. Working together with our agency, Junior Giants reaches into communities and offers youth a chance to learn the basics of baseball during the summer while also discovering the importance of essential life skills.

Programs include:• Character development• Health• Education• Bullying prevention • Round the base reading

At the end of every practice each coach hands out the prize for the week and also has a discussion with their team about the “word of the week” and explains to them how important it is to stay healthy and eat right, how important is to keep up with their education, how to treat others respectfully, and most importantly we focus the most on teaching all our players how harmful bullying can be and how we can prevent bullying in our future.

Round the Bases Reading ProgramThe Round the Bases Reading Program is designed to encourage Junior Giants to read during the summer months. The achievement levels follow a baseball diamond and after each base is completed, players earn Giants-branded prizes. The criteria for each level is as follows:

• 1st Base Read the Junior Giants Handbook• 2nd Base Read 240 minutes

Coed Baseball• T-Ball (5yrs-6yrs)- 3 teams• Minors (7yrs-10yrs)- 4 teams• Majors (11yrs-13yrs)- 2 teamsAll Girls Softball• Minors (7yrs-10yrs)- 2 teams

• 3rd Base Read 480 minutes• Home Run Read 720 minutes

This season Pittsburg’s Junior Giants had a total of 203 players and 72 coach/team parent volunteers. The ambassador this year provided by the Giants was Andrea Gonzalez. We had three (3) divisions for our Coed baseball with a total of nine (9) teams. We had one (1) division for our all girls softball with a total of two (2) teams.

Junior Giants would not be possible without all the dedicated and hardworking coaches and team parents that volunteer to help throughout the season. Each volunteer has to register through the junior giants website and undergo and pass a background check before they are able to step foot on the field with the players.
