Methodologically,CSSRresearch isempirical,butproblem-driven.Whileweutilisebothquantitativeand qualitative strategies of data collection, our work is based on systematic research designs with clearconceptualisationofvariablesand transparent rules foroperationalisingvariables, selectingcases, andcollectingandanalysingdataanalysis(incontrasttoadhocfactcollectionornarrativedescription).Afterareasonableperiod,collecteddataareturnedintopublicaccessdatasetsanddepositedwiththeDataFirstResourceCentre.
CSSR projects are usually team-oriented, bringing togethermultiple local and international researchers, and offering post-graduatestudentssignificantopportunitiesforhands-ontrainingbyinvolvingtheminallstagesofprojects.ResearchfindingsarepresentedanddiscussedatregularweeklyseminarsandpublishedasCSSRWorkingPapers.
CSSR DirectorateThe CSSR Directorate is the administrative hub for the units making up the CSSR. It manages the finances, edits and producesworkingpapers,organisesmeetings,andprovidesanorganisationalfocalpointfortheCSSR.During2011,JeremySeekingswastheCSSRDirector.TheadministrativeteamiscomposedofKathyForbes(AdministrativeOfficer),LibbiDownes(FinanceOfficer),MariusCoqui(AssistantFinanceOfficer),NcedekaMbune(ReceptionandAdministration),andJessicaKing(PublicationsEditor).

ThisyearmarkedthetenthanniversaryoftheestablishmentoftheCSSR,andprovidedanopportunity forustoreflectonwhathaschanged–andwhathasnotchanged–inthesetenyears.Thereportsonthe constituent units within the CSSR reveal continuing achievements in terms of graduate training, the collection of new data, the publication and dissemination of research, engagement with public policy-making, and outreach programmes. Yet we are also aware that the culture and practice of teaching and research in systematic social science at UCT has changed completely. Skills in quantitativedataanalysisremainscarceoutsideofeconomics, anduntilthisyeartheworkoftheCSSR hasreliedheavilyonitsthreeremainingfoundingmembers(NicoliNattrass,RobertMattesandJeremy Seekings).
The expansion of the CSSR ProbablythemoststrikingandimportantchangetotheCSSRduring2011wastheappointmentofnew personnel, with funding from the UCT Vice-Chancellor’s Fund and our existing grant from theMellon Foundation. Dr Pedro Wolf took up a joint appointment between the CSSR and the Psychology Department earlierthisyear.AssociateProfessorRajenGovendertookupahalf-timeappointmentintheCSSRandSociologyDepartmentonthe1stJuly.DrElenaMoorewasappointedasaJuniorResearchFellowintheCSSR,withclosetiestotheSociologyDepartment.DrsWolfandGovenderteachgraduatecoursesinquantitativesocialscienceinthePsychology,PoliticalStudiesandSociologydepartments,andintheshortextra-curricularcoursesthattheCSSRisoffering.Theyalsoadvisestudentsandresearchersonresearchdesignanddataanalysis.TheseappointmentshavesubstantiallyenhancedthecapacityoftheCSSRtoworkwithteachingdepartmentsinpreparingandguidingstudentsandjuniorresearchersinsystematic,socialscientificresearch,andtoconductinnovativeandcriticalresearchusingdiversemethodologies.DrMooremanagedasurveyondiversityinJohannesburgandCapeTown(forwhichtheCSSRprovidedsupporttoProfessorCrankshawinSociology,andtheMaxPlanckInstitute),andassistedwithteachingandsupervisingstudentsinSociology.
In addition, the CSSR is working with UCT’s DataFirst (originally part of the CSSR) in expanding dedicated support in theanalysis of survey data for postgraduate students and researchers in the Social Sciences. DataFirst appointed CSSR-based PhDstudent and researcher Eduard Grebe to a part-time position, physically located in the CSSR. Ed’s responsibilities include promotingthe analysis of survey data available through DataFirst, including supporting students who are doing this.Although DataFirst physicallyrelocated (with theSchoolofEconomics) toUCT’smiddle campus, online access todatasetsplus thepresenceofEd in theCSSRmeansthattheresourcesofDataFirstcontinuetobeavailabletostudentsonUCT’suppercampus.EdalsooverseestheCSSR’swebsite(www.cssr.uct.ac.za),whichhere-designed.
