Dear Friends,

As we reflect on 2015, what comes to light is the beginning of a new era for Attention Homes. A bold new vision to provide every youth with a safe place to live and the attention they need, and the emergence of new partnerships that will serve as key building blocks for the future.

Our strategic plan kept the focus on board governance, organizational development, program design and evaluation, and financial sustainability. By defining our vision and honoring our past, we identified the values that are central to our work, reflecting the input of all including our clients. Refining our mission to provide youth in crisis with life-changing resources not only represents the positive impact that Attention Homes has provided to over 9,000 youth since 1966 but a never-ending commitment to evolve our programs to meet the changing needs of youth at-risk in our community.

Diverse streams of funding have generated a rich cross section of individuals, volunteers, corporate partners, foundations, government funders, faith communities and service clubs. Your support allowed us to expand our services to over 750 youth in 2015 and provide innovative new techniques like equine therapy, family coaching, and expanded educational and employment supports. For both our residential and runaway and homeless youth programs, we witnessed improved outcomes and healthier results. Our positive financial report for 2015 demonstrates the power of a community coming together to help its own and we are grateful for every donation that comes through our door.

Collaborative partnerships are helping to strengthen our goals to build stronger pathways to emotional and social well-being, self-sufficiency, and permanent connections. Gardner Capital Development and First United Methodist Church (our founding partners back in 1966) have demonstrated their commitment by supporting our efforts to provide housing and a path to independence; Social Venture Partners of Boulder County has thrown their weight and capital behind increasing capacity and ensuring that our organization is responsible and effective; and local funders like City of Boulder, Boulder County Housing and Human Services and City of Longmont have continued to support our young people and ensure that all have an opportunity to succeed and thrive in our growing community.

Our efforts to provide life-changing resources for youth in crisis and end youth homelessness reflect the work of a dedicated group of professionals, volunteers and partners who believe in the strength and perseverance of vulnerable youth who strive for a better future and demonstrate courage each and every day. Thank you for being a part of our journey.

2015 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Since 1966, Attention Homes has provided crucial life-changing services to over 9,000 youth in crisis ranging in age from 12-24. For clients at a developmental stage where trauma can permanently impact their long-term well-being and lead to a future of instability, we provide a safe environment for them to change the trajectory of their lives. Our goal is to prevent long-term chronic homelessness by building emotional, behavioral and career-related pathways to success and ultimately self-sufficiency.

• An innovative Equine Therapy Program served clients with significant trauma histories.

• Our Transitional Living Program provided on-going case management and expanded to three units with Thistle Communities.

• Attention Homes, First United Methodist Church of Boulder and Gardner Capital Development established a partnership to develop a 40-unit supportive housing community in Boulder for transition age youth experiencing homelessness.

• An on-site GED program and educational navigator enabled 72% of long-term RHY shelter clients to pursue their educational goals.

• A record number of youth and adults participated in the 4th Annual Sleep Out event to advocate for homeless youth.

• The 8th Annual Kaleidoscope Gala “Le Cirque Magnifique” raised over $200k.

• Employment counseling expanded to include supportive services to both employers and clients and an in-house job fair.

• Our grants budget exceeded goals by over 35% allowing us to deepen the impact of our work with increased hours of service, LGBTQ support, life skill development, medical care, sexual health and counseling.

However, significant challenges persist…

Across America, the number of homeless children is at an all-time high, and one out of every 30 children is homeless.

• In 2014 nearly 1 in 3 children were below 200% of the federal poverty level in Boulder County.

• 1,289 students (K-12) were homeless in Boulder County Schools during the 2014-2015 school year.

• Boulder County is experiencing an affordable housing crisis where average rents have increased by 30% since 2011, while average incomes have only increased by 4%.

• 182 substantiated cases of child abuse or neglect in 2014 found that 30% were in households with an identified problem of sexual assault, 23% domestic violence, 19% alcohol abuse, 14% illegal drug use, and 9% methamphetamine use was present.

• In 2014, 237 children under 18 were placed out of home due to abuse, neglect, serious emotional problems, conflict with parents, or juvenile delinquency

• LGBTQ youth experience increased bullying, depression, and suicide attempts. Nearly one-fifth of LGBTQ high school students in Boulder County attempted suicide in 2015.

• Roughly 26,000 young people age out of U.S. foster care each year and more than 1 in 5 experience homelessness. The FBI reports that close to 60 percent of the children rescued from sex trafficking were systems youth.
