to put every child and their family at “the center” of our efforts to bring joy and hope in the

midst of some very trying times. Even before a family arrives at The Center for Courageous Kids,

our dedicated team is preparing to not only make dreams come true, but also to bring support

to the entire family. As innovators in medical camping, we are by our campers’ side at every

step, through every decision, providing a seamless network of support for our campers and their

families. The cost of this exceptional medical camping experience is never a burden: Because

of You… no family ever pays to attend camp, for their medical treatment, program activities,

housing or food – because we believe a family should lay down their burdens at the gate!

I am honored to serve as the President/CEO and Executive Director for The Center for

Courageous Kids. It is a great privilege for me to have this opportunity and to continue making

an impact in the lives of these amazing children and their families. My focus, along with the rest

of the staff, will center around providing this extraordinary opportunity to as many children

and families as possible. Inspiration is a daily occurrence here at CCK and it comes as a direct

result of the courage exemplified by our campers. My vision for the future of The Center for

Courageous Kids is simple…improve the quality of life for these courageous kids.

We want the kids of CCK to thrive – even while undergoing treatment, taking numerous

prescriptions and therapies. They are not just another kid, they are a courageous kid! Because

of You… in 2016, we served nearly 4,000 children, young teens, and their families with hopes

and dreams and wishes, and so we celebrate their lives and milestones

every day. We cheer them on as they overcome fear and climb the

rock wall, ride a horse for the first time, or smear pudding in their

counselor’s hair at messy games.

The Center for Courageous Kids is passionate about the

experiences, friendships, and memories we are able to

provide and hope that you will continue to share in the life

changing effects it has on our campers and their families…

GIVING TUESDAY

In 2016, The Center for Courageous Kids participated

in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the

power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on

the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the

widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber

Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season,

when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

It was so amazing to see the outpouring of love and

thankfulness for CCK from our campers, families,

counselors, staff and donors on this day of giving! It’s with

great pleasure that we get to say we raised $13,564! We

had a generous $4,500 match and it was completely met.

Each gift represented a life touched by CCK and “BECAUSE

OF YOU” and your collective impact, it will help ensure we

can continue to serve the bravest children we know!

2016 VOLUNTEERS

Van Meter Insurance has generously contributed to The Center for Courageous Kids annually. Their support is more than just financial, 40 volunteers have gone above and beyond by coming to camp to give their time and love to our kids during our 2016 summer camps. We love our friends at Van Meter Insurance.

Cabela’s employees came out for their Second Annual Fishing Day this year. The Center for Courageous Kids is so thankful to receive a grant from the Cabela’s Outdoor Fund that helped launch an outdoor cooking program for CCK’s oldest campers.

Throughout the year, local corporations joined in on the action and showed some love to our Courageous Kids. Blue Cotton, Jennings Perry and Schmitt, ZebraGraphics and Rite Aid joined together to play games, make snow cones and paint faces during one of our CCK Spring Carnivals. By giving of their resources and their time, these groups show our kids we are all in this together, CCK STRONG! In 2016, The Center for Courageous Kids has welcomed over 800 volunteers, of all ages, who have eagerly invested in our mission. We are very fortunate to have so many individuals who are dedicated to assisting our Courageous Campers and their families. Among those volunteers, are the ladies who come every week to help get our lodges ready for the next set of campers by making sure every bed is neatly done with our handmade quilts. They are the smiling faces behind the scenes. There is one special lady who has volunteered since the beginning. The Center for Courageous Kids proudly presented Betty Lou Wheat, from Scottsville, KY, the inaugural “Stormi Murtie Service-Above-Self Award". This award will be given annually to that volunteer whose service exemplifies the quality of helping others to create the strongest sense of community. This award is given in honor of CCK’s first employee, Stormi Murtie, who helped create the sense of community at The Center for Courageous Kids and made helping others the strongest value of the Camp.

When the Campers get messy, the

Scottsville Fire Departmentis there to lend a hand… or a hose. For 9 summers, the SFD turn on their sirens to make a difference. Every week, the dedicated local firefighters show up in their red truck to hose pudding, slime and spaghetti off of our campers after an intense Messy Games. It has become a camp tradition and the summer experience wouldn’t be the same without these brave men and women who take time to make our kids smile.

Norton Children’s Hospital is dedicated to providing expert pediatric cardiovascular care

and is the largest pediatric cardiovascular service in the region. Not only are they committed

to providing quality medical care, but through BraveHearts (supported by the Children’s

Hospital Foundation); they are able to provide programmatic care to the children and

families within this community. BraveHearts is a support group of local families united by

their children’s fight for life after being born with a complex congenital heart defect that

required heart surgery. These children many times have endured multiple heart surgeries,

heart transplants and other related medical issues. For the parents of these children, learning

their baby had a serious heart defect that would require surgery was an incredibly scary thing

to go through. As a team, these parents wish to provide support for other families navigating

this uncertain path. The BraveHearts are here, because we have all been there.

Since 2009, CCK and BraveHearts have hosted 16 retreat weekends and summer camps

combined. This year we would like to highlight the amazing partnership with BraveHearts;

one that has made it possible for 862 campers and 237 families to attend camp. Being

average doesn’t seem like much to strive for, yet it can mean everything for children who

yearn to do things in a regular kid way. Camp BraveHearts gives these children that chance

during a week at The Center for Courageous Kids, and on the spring weekends the

entire family enjoys the fellowship of one another.

The Mighty Mighty BraveHearts is an organization – a family

– that we are so proud to have at CCK.

CCK DOCTORS AND NURSES WEAR SMILES NOT SCRUBS.The Center for Courageous Kids is a place of fun and

laughter, and we find that a day on the lake is the

best medicine, and a horseback ride can heal the

soul. However, if a camper needs more than sun-

shine, we have experienced and highly trained med-

ical staff here to meet every child’s medical need.


The Center for Courageous Kids partnered

with Houchens Industries for the Fifth Annual

Houchens Mobile Program in 2016. This annual

fundraising campaign offered communities across

a five county region in Kentucky and Middle

TN the opportunity to give back when they

visited a participating Houchens store. Through

the course of this 4 week campaign, Houchens

Mobile Program raised $30,000 for CCK. Who

knew a $1.00 donation could make such a

BIG difference. A special thanks to Houchens

Industries Marketing Team, Store Managers,

Clerks, Camper Ambassadors, and those

community members who took time to donate.

HOUCHENS CUSTOMERS GAVE CCK CAMPERS THEIR

BEST DAY EVER

The Third Annual Courageous Kids 6K Run & Fun Walk raised

$30,000 with the help of our amazing campers, families, runners, and

walkers.The race welcomed over 200 participants from across the state,

and volunteers from local businesses, civic clubs, Kohl’s, WKU Greek

organizations and WKU Baseball Team. A special thanks goes out to our

Title Sponsors, Edmonton State Bank and Halton Group Americas, along

with all of our generous supporting sponsors. It is because of YOU… we

were able to raise much needed funds for the brave kids who attend CCK.

Patent Pending Curious Eatery &

Bar and White Squirrel Brewery

went head-to-head in the first

ever Food Fight Night benefiting

CCK. The Bowling Green

restaurants competed to see who

could raise the most money for

CCK by donating 20% of their

sales. The money raised helped

fund our food program at CCK. It

was a fun night for all who came,

including our brave Courageous

Campers who came to cheer

the restaurants on. Great food,

friendly competition, and a few

pies in the face raised over $1,000.

for the Fifth Annual Kentucky/

Tennessee Latte Art Throwdown &

Caffeination Celebration. Raising

$1,750, this event welcomed over

60 talented Baristas from across

Kentucky and Tennessee.

When you come to CCK, you hear the belly laughs and see the smiles on each of our campers’

faces. It is obvious to everyone who visits camp, that it is truly a special place where every child

has a place and a voice. However, we know that there are many people who do not get the

opportunity to come to CCK to see firsthand what we do. This is where our amazing Camper

Ambassadors come in to close the gap between communities across the nation and CCK. Every

child’s face represents CCK. Every child’s voice tells the story. What better way to spread the word

about CCK than through the stories of our campers. To assist in this effort to spread the word

about CCK, we launched the first Camper Ambassador

Program in 2016. We wanted to create a network for

our campers to be a part of, no matter where they

live. This Ambassador Program gives campers a chance

to tell their CCK story in their own community.

We wanted to highlight some of our local campers who represented CCK in events like our

Courageous Kids 6K, The Food Fight and our Houchens Industries Mobile Program. In addition

to being present at CCK community events, many of our campers worked hard to do additional

fundraising for CCK during our 6K race and #Giving Tuesday. There are so many ways for our

campers and families to be Ambassadors. If you want to find out how you can become an

This year, 11 Summer Staff members took Cubby, the Courageous Lion, to new heights by sky diving in honor of our amazing campers. Through the help of their family and friends who donated money towards this brave adventure, they raised over $5,000 for the most amazing kids around.
