Chester County Futures Graduating Class of 2014!

Chester County Futures Annual Report 2013-2014

Dear Friends, Chester County Futures continued to serve over 300 low-income students in five school districts in the county, and an additional 143 college students. We proudly report a 100% graduation from high school rate for the class of 2014, with 90% matriculation to college/post-secondary schools. Chester County Futures programming remained strong while a smooth transition to new leadership was accomplished. After the resignation of Kimberly Hall, a formal executive search was conducted by the Board of Directors. Former Director of Development Maria McDonald was awarded the position in May 2014 after serving as Acting Executive Director for four months. Her insight and knowledge provide important continuity to both programmatic and fundraising efforts of the organization. Our remarkable students are at the core of all we do. Our staff and Board are inspired by their determination to succeed, to obtain what previous generations in their families frequently have not, a college degree. Eighty-five percent (85%) of our students will be first-generation college students. Their path is fraught with the all too common obstacles that come with living below the poverty level.

Imagine navigating the college application process if your parents did not finish high school, did not speak English, if you did not have a computer in the home or a quiet place to study. These are just some of the obstacles our students face on a daily basis. This is where Chester County Futures steps in…to keep the college dialogue ALIVE for our students, helping them stay on track and focused.

Activity highlights from the 2013-14 school year include:

Our high school students participated in corporate site visits to SEI, Siemens, and SAP.

A select group of female students were invited to attend the DigiGirlz conference hosted by Microsoft.

100% of our program staff received extensive training in Project Based Learning techniques that were implemented in our after school curriculum for middle school and 10th grade students.

Students toured the campuses of Albright College and West Chester University.

Our first collaboration with the Coatesville Youth Initiative resulted in college trips for both student populations to Cheyney University and Penn State Brandywine.

Over two hundred (200) Chester County Futures students and twenty (20) Coatesville Youth Initiative students attended the annual College and Career EXPO hosted by Lincoln University.

We are deeply grateful to our partners, large and small, for their support of our hard-working students. We continue to mindfully manage our resources to improve our programs and invest in our young people. We promise to continue to be good stewards of your generous donations and thank you for placing your trust in us and our motivated students.

Sincerely, James L. Coyne Maria McDonald Board Chair Executive Director

HIGHLIGHTS: We piloted a technology-based Project-Based Learning (PBL) program in four of our after-school academic enrichment classes. PBL is an active, hands-on, student-driven learning model that places particular emphasis on 21st century skill development and maximizing the use of technology. We made available to our students a mobile computer lab further increasing access to technology, thus supporting skill development necessary in today’s educational and career environments. We received a ‘Phoenixville Initiative for Endowment’ grant in spring 2014 from the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation. This endowment initiative will increase our long-term sustainability allowing us to serve low-income students far into the future.

Student Quote:

“Chester County Futures has helped me a lot these past few years. Everything from college visits to just being there for me when I was in need. Whenever I was having a bad day or just needed someone to talk to, I knew I had a great support system that would always be there for me.

For me, my home life is not great. I had a lot of problems and being able to go to Futures every week helped because I was able to not only talk to my leaders about school issues, but my issues at home as well.”
