LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear Friends,

With your support, Girls Inc. saw great growth and success during our 2019 fiscal year. During my first months here, I have learned how transformative our work is in helping girls discover that they can be strong, smart, and bold—and also just how crucial your engagement and generosity are to that work. We are deeply grateful.

This past fiscal year was the fourth in the Girls Inc. five-year strategic plan. This plan is the roadmap for addressing our organizational priorities: expanding services to reach more girls, quantifying our impact, strengthening our affiliates’ capacity, and amplifying our public policy and advocacy efforts. Girls Inc. has achieved a great deal in these areas, thanks to Judy Vredenburgh’s heartfelt, steadfast leadership.

The number of girls supported by the comprehensive Girls Inc. Experience has increased by 11% since 2016. Solid financial investment made this growth possible. We raised $12.6M, 4% higher than our objective. We also made considerable progress in closing out our capital campaign, with $19.85M of $20M raised. Girls Inc. is committed to excellent stewardship of the funds entrusted to us, as we implement a model that works.

We have the outcomes to prove it. In collaboration with leaders at Girls Inc. affiliates nationwide, last year the organization put in place a measurement strategy that promotes consistent data collection and clearly connects metrics to our goals for girls, providing the ability to quantify our impact. We also collaborated with best-in-class external research teams—AIR and the Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality—to conduct a rigorous, third-party evaluation of the outcomes that matter most for girls.

Ensuring that all girls realize their fullest potential means addressing the structural barriers that hold them back. Last October, Girls Inc. took a historic step in that direction with the launch of the #GirlsToo: Respect Starts Young campaign. This movement seeks to end the sexual harassment and violence that far too many girls face, and to create a culture in which all young people grow up safe, respected, and valued. You can read more about the impact of the #GirlsToo campaign later in this report.

The challenges that girls face—particularly girls of color and girls from low-income communities—are increasingly urgent, and the need for support is critical. In the face of extraordinary circumstances, it’s heartening to have a sense of how to tackle the problem. The programming that Girls Inc. offers has been assessed and proven, and we are determined to be a part of the solution.

Girls Inc. could not do this work without all of you—staff, colleagues, supporters, and friends. Your dedication and commitment to the girls we serve are the heart of all that we do. I am tremendously proud to have joined you, and I look forward to what we will continue to accomplish together.

Sincerely,

Stephanie J. Hull, Ph.D. President & CEO

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Friends,

This year’s annual report features some stellar examples of the work Girls Inc. is undertaking, thanks largely to your investment and support.

Girls Inc. reached new levels of growth, impact, and effectiveness in fiscal year 2019. We made great strides to strengthen our affiliate network, ensuring that our local Girls Inc. organizations have what they need to scale up—a strong business foundation, effective organizational leadership, and a learning strategy that leads to growth and sustainability. The overall goal in building their capacity is to ensure that we can serve more girls through high-quality, proven Girls Inc. programming.

For those affiliates that are ready for accelerated expansion, Girls Inc. continued to make significant financial investments, awarding more than $9.7 million in grants to 46 affiliates since the launch of our network-wide growth initiative. These organizations are leveraging local support to become even more effective in helping girls thrive and succeed.

Last year, the launch of the new Girls Inc. Learning Management System positioned affiliates to provide ongoing development for leaders and staff. A data-driven, growing organization like ours has to have the technology and infrastructure to centralize professional learning in an intentional and lasting way, so that we can evolve to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Developing skilled staff and strong leaders positions us to give girls the very best support we can.

Another key asset that continues to expand our reach and impact is the Girls Inc. brand. Total brand awareness skyrocketed last year, from 24 percent to 32 percent. This past January, Girls Inc. received unprecedented exposure when we teamed up with CBS to air our first-ever SuperBowl PSA. Greater visibility means greater opportunities to engage new supporters and advocates, giving girls many more champions.

With these impressive advances, I am all the more proud to have taken on the role of Chair of the Girls Inc. Board of Directors in May 2019. Immediate past Chair Melanie Gray deserves resounding thanks for her dedication and leadership since 2016. Her passion for and commitment to the organization has positioned us extraordinarily well for the important work ahead.

Girls Inc. is making a measurable difference in the lives of individual girls and increasing opportunities for all girls to succeed. We are grateful to you, our donors, friends, and supporters who make this work possible. Together, we will transform the lives of many, many more girls.

Sincerely,

Tony Bucci Board Chair

SCHOLAR FEATURE

Hello! My name is Marilyn.

I just completed my freshman year at the University of Notre Dame. This dream would not have been possible without having Girls Inc. at my side. My college experience has started off great -- thanks to everything I gained at Girls Inc.: confidence and life skills, mentoring relationships, college prep and career advice, and financial support from the National Scholarship. There were definitely academic and social challenges I faced. But each time, I drew confidence from my Girls Inc. experiences to remind myself how much I am capable of.

As I plan ahead for Environmental Engineering courses, I cannot help but think about how much my life has been changed for the better, thanks to the active involvement of Girls Inc. Undoubtedly, there is more change to come. Though it might be nerve-wracking, I know I can always count on Girls Inc to encourage and inspire me to be strong, smart, and bold.

Meet Marilyn

CHAMPIONS

As part of its mission to power a more prosperous world, Cummins Inc. is partnering with Girls Inc. to extend that vision to all girls through its Cummins Powers Women program. This global initiative is committed to the advancement of women and girls everywhere. Girls Inc. is the program’s North American partner, and Cummins is helping us build capacity both nationally and locally by cultivating leadership and organizational development, boosting affiliate growth, and strengthening our ability to measure outcomes. Thanks to Cummins, Girls Inc. will both reach more girls through a stronger network and more accurately assess the transformational results. The bottom line: Cummins is making a major investment in the rights, opportunities, and futures of girls across the country. Amy Adams, Vice President Strategic Initiatives at Cummins Inc. and a Girls Inc. Board Member, says, “We are very proud to work with Girls Inc. We see this partnership as a crucial way both to provide greater opportunity for girls right now and to ensure that they are ready to step up as strong, smart, bold leaders for the next generation.” Girls Inc. is proud of—and grateful for—Cummins’ commitment to expand our capacity to provide the Girls Inc. experience for more girls everywhere.

Cummins Inc.

Susan Chapman-Hughes, the Executive Vice President and Global Head of Digital Capabilities, Transformation, and Operations at American Express, is in it for the girls. A steadfast believer in the benefits to girls of coaching and mentoring, Susan has been a member of the Girls Inc. National Board of Directors since 2012. Susan lends her expertise to supporting the best possible future for all girls—as our National Board treasurer, generous investor, and longtime ally and friend. Like Girls Inc., Susan is deeply committed to the value of mentoring: “Mentors help girls realize their full potential. They encourage creativity, model the importance of focus and drive, and demonstrate the way to define and pursue critical steps toward success. I wouldn’t be here if concerned mentors didn’t help me. This is one of my opportunities to pay it forward.”
