THE PIMCO FOUNDATION IS HONORED AND PRIVILEGED TO PARTNER WITH HUMAN OPTIONS FINANCIALLY AND WITH OUR OWN HUMAN CAPITAL. WE FIRMLY BELIEVE IN THE MISSION AND LEADERSHIP OF THIS ORGANIZATION, AND WE KNOW THAT HUMAN OPTIONS HEALS UNIMAGINABLE HURTS AND REBUILDS LIVES AND COMMUNITIES WHILE DOING SO. IT IS AN INTEGRAL NONPROFIT IN ORANGE COUNTY DOING ABSOLUTELY STUNNING WORK.
- SARAH MIDDLETONTHE PIMCO FOUNDATION
HUMAN OPTIONSANNUAL REPORT 2015–20162
Dear Friends,In 1981, four remarkable women – Carolyn Churm, Margaret Thoreau, Anne Wright and our founding Executive Director Vivian Clecak—gave life to a dream that no women or child would be afraid in their own home. With a passion deeply rooted in love, Vivian led Human Options until her retirement earlier this year. Her vision and pioneering spirit has led the way, breaking new ground in Orange County’s response to victims of domestic violence.
That innovation continues today. As a leader in the field of domestic violence, we are strategically addressing the changing and growing complex needs of those affected by this issue. Human Options has established key partnerships with HOAG, Kaiser Permanente, Santa Ana and Irvine School Districts as well as four police departments (Irvine, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, and Newport Beach). Our staff are teaching health care and law enforcement professionals how to recognize and respond to domestic violence victims. It is working, 92%
of health care professionals said they will change how they respond to their patients moving forward. In addition, Human Options has partnered with several high schools throughout Orange County including the Santa Ana and Irvine school districts supporting campus-wide activities and education about teen dating abuse and healthy relationships. We are also proud to be the only domestic violence service provider in the Strong Families, Strong Children Collaborative offering vital innovative community-based support services to military families impacted by domestic violence. In the following pages you’ll learn more about Human Options—what we do, and how, with your support, we are able to fulfill our mission. As the new leader of this outstanding organization, I am thrilled to be leading Human Options as we forge new partnerships and embark on county wide efforts, building a common agenda to end domestic violence.
Sincerely,

CARING CLOSE TO HOME: COSTA MESA FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER
Amidst the many struggles and barriers that Maria faced each day, raising her teenage daughter who has significant behavioral issues has been her biggest challenge. With a history of domestic violence, she felt like her resources and support were limited. But that changed when Maria saw a Human Options flyer and learned about the specialized services available at the Costa Mesa Family Resource Center (CM FRC). Now, she’s participating in parenting classes and receiving counseling through our program. Maria is an active participant at CM FRC and—after receiving various services—says she feels supported and at ease. In partnership with Hoag Hospital and Families and Communities Together, the CM FRC opened July 1, 2015 at the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living. As the lead agency and partner at CM FRC, Human Options offers families prevention and intervention services such as counseling, parenting education, educational and supportive groups for victims of domestic violence, all in one place. “What we’ve created is a shared purpose and a different way of looking at services across the spectrum,” said Human Options Chief Executive Officer Maricela Rios-Faust. “Given the lack of nonprofit services in Costa Mesa, this new center has helped empower members of the community who rely on the programs to speak out and refer others in need. When somebody is in a crisis and they are able to connect with a place that demonstrates that they care, it makes a profound difference.”
LEADING THE WAY IN TRAINING HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS TO SCREEN FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Despite research showing the significant health impacts of domestic violence, it is rarely seen as a major health concern. Human Options is working to change this—making domestic violence screenings by healthcare providers as routine as an annual exam.
DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR:
97% of health care professionals said the trainings will help in providing good patient care.
92% indicated the training increased their ability to identify domestic violence exposure.
THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND HEALTH COLLECTIVE MILESTONES
2013 The Orange County Women’s Health Project identifies domestic violence as one of the top three priority health issues affecting women in Orange County.
2014 Blue Shield of California provides significant funding for Orange County to address domestic violence as a major health priority.
2015 The Domestic Violence and Health Collective is formed and Human Options is chosen as the lead agency to create a countywide training program for healthcare providers and social service professionals.
2016 Human Options and the University of California Irvine launch the first healthcare provider trainings.

WHEN TEACHING SAFETY AT SCHOOL CHANGES LIFE AT HOME
Susie knew her parents fought a lot. She would hear them yell, and watch her father give her mother an allowance each week for groceries. After attending a Human Options “Safe Dates for Teens” program at school, she quickly realized that what was happening in her home was domestic violence. She decided to talk to her mother about what she had learned, and the services and support available through Human Options. With her daughter’s support, Susie’s mother gained the courage to engage Human Options. Today, Susie and her mother are discovering safety, healing and a way forward. Thanks to a new partnership with the Santa Ana School District, children like Susie, and their families, have more access to programs that will keep them safe from domestic violence. “Through the implementation of three specific curricula—Safe Dates, Hands are Not for Hitting and Families for Safe Dates—our goal is to educate our youth early, increase protection from abusers and decrease any risk for future abuse,” said Judith Rose, program director, Human Options Center for Children and Families. The program is estimated to reach more than 200 students, grades K through 12, and parents or caregivers, educating them on identification and alternatives to violent behavior, teen dating abuse prevention and healthy teen-caregiver relationships. Susie was able to break the cycle of abuse in her family by learning about the warning signs.
CHELSEA’S STORY: HIGHLIGHTS AN INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIP
“My memory of childhood was sparse and cracked. I suffered from nightmares, I suffered from inexplicable anger. Things were blurred,” said Chelsea, a local high school student and Human Options client. A child who grows up in a home with domestic violence lives in a constant state of chaos, unpredictability and fear. Recent studies now document what Human Options already knows: these children are at increased risk of drug and alcohol addiction, suicide, juvenile delinquency, and ultimately repeating the cycle of domestic violence in their adult relationships. “Through my therapy at Human Options, I was able to talk through my early years,” said Chelsea. “Telling my story played a big role in helping me overcome my fears.” Thanks to a generous grant from Julia and George Argyros and the Argyros Family Foundation, Human Options has been able to focus on new therapeutic interventions for children and their parents. Staff help parents to build their parenting skills, provide positive reinforcement and practice healthy communication. These positive parenting techniques along with wellness activities such as yoga and art classes create stronger, healthier parent-child bonds. “Through Human Options, my mother and I participated in a wellness group for teens. We met once a week to do yoga, art, and share our experiences. The group helped me learn to take care of my inner self so that I can overcome the pain of domestic violence and lead a healthier, stronger life.
