Throughout the past year manychanges took place within the center, but one thing remainedthe same: the John H. BonerCommunity Center continuedto represent hope and oppor-tunity. Within a few weeks ofthe New Year leadership, staff and community real-

ized that 2009 wouldbe a “Key Year forOpportunity.”

Devoted, engaged and dedicated are just a few words todescribe the staff who worked with individuals and familiesduring 2009. Through both the center's programs and services, staff helped inspire and enthuse those who made a commitment to a better quality of life for themselves aswell as their families. This was done through training, education, motivation and perseverance.

The center offered new approaches to better address thevariety of needs within families, which was one of thebiggest achievements from 2009.

The John H. Boner Community Center’s work begins atground zero: working with families that have the desire andwillpower to work towards a better quality of life.

Many of the participants who walk through our doors arefaced with complex challenges. Our services and supporttranslates to opportunities to those who are in need. Thiswould not be possible without a committed staff, volunteers, partners and donors - All of which believe that communityservices are most effective when located in the neighbor-hoods where they are needed most.

These are challenging times and we strive to provide oppor-tunities and the keys needed for success to those who needit most. Through your continued support, we remain dedi-cated to provide services and advocate on behalf of ourneighbors.

We thank YOU, our donors, board members, volunteersand staff for your support andparticipation to help furtherour mission.

Quality of health is a growing issue in America, especiallyamong older adults. The John H. Boner Community Center’s Senior Services Program helps promote healthierlifestyles and increase socialization among senior citizenson the near eastside.

In addition to regular health screenings, wellness discus-sions and consultations, in 2009 the center's senior andwellness coordinator offered a unique and memorableopportunity for the group. They were invited to take part inthe OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, a 13.1 milemarathon.

189seniors throughout Marion County received

blood pressure checks from the John H.

Boner Community Center throughout 2009.

Once each senior received written permission from theirphysician, the training began. Starting out slow and steady, the group gradually increased their walks from within theneighborhood to the Monon Trail. During the cold wintermonths, L.A. Fitness in Glendale, provided free gym time for the center’s runners to train on treadmills.

Each participating senior was taken to the Runners Forumwhere M&I Bank purchased running shoes and socks for thegroup. With one day before the big event, the mini partici-pants were surprised as they walked into the center's Halstead Hall and were greeted by cheers. Staff, community

residents, friends and the Arsenal Technical High School cheerleaders honored the seniors with a pep rally.

Without the help of numerous people, our seniors wouldnot have had this remarkable opportunity and experience. When asked what was their favorite part of the race, onesenior laughed as she answered, “The finish line! Seriously, knowing that I accomplished something this big. With outthe help of the John H. Boner Community Center I wouldhave never thought about running in a marathon, nevermind actually finishing it.”

“This shuttle fills many of the gaps in the current system,”said executive director, Katie Etter. “The current IndyGo busservice does a wonderful job on the near eastside ifindividuals are traveling east to west. This shuttle will fill

in the gaps and offer a better north-south connection.”

Only $1 per ride, NEO was designed to be affordable forour near eastside residents. Children ages five and underride for free when accompanied by an adult.

Monthly passes are offered as well. The shuttle route beginsat the John H. Boner Community Center and completes a15-mile circular route in one hour.

What does the 2012 Super Bowl Legacy Project mean for our

neighborhood?

Before Indianapolis was selectedas the host city of the 2012Super Bowl, neighborhood residents gathered and collec-tively created a vision for thefuture of our community. The

vision was one full ofvitality, vigor and

vibrancy. Thisnew plan was

comprised of 150 objectives based on housing revitaliza-tion, economic development, family strengthening, educa-tion, neighborhood connection and leadership, educationand public safety. Before the Legacy Project, the neighbor-hood was well on its way to implement these changes;changes such as infrastructure and sewer improvements andothers efforts which had already leveraged $29 million ininvestments into the community.

Just as this year's annual report states: A “Key” Year forOpportunity. The Legacy Project offers opportunities, notjust for the center, but for the near eastside as a whole.Thisonce-in-a-lifetime opportunity will accelerate the thoughtfulplanning and work of this community-driven vision and plan.

With hard work, coupled with the excitement of the 2012Super Bowl, our community will build new relationships, gar-ner additional support and assistance which residents will beable to use to accomplish our plan. The link between thecommunity's overall goals and this opportunity is the prom-ise to create momentum which will positively impact ourneighborhood for decades to come.

This opportunity came about because neighborhood resi-dents came together first, created a strong vision, acted andthen made positive changes. My position as the center'sChief Executive Officer (CEO) came as a result of these

community development opportunities made possiblethrough the near eastside's quality of life plan. As CEO, center staff and I will be able to serve community residentsin a more meaningful and effective manner. I am proud toserve the community and work with you as we leverage thespotlight of the 2012 Super Bowl for the betterment of ourneighborhood. We have before us the opportunity to usethe excitement of a one day event, to transform our neighborhood forever.
