A Message from our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

We kicked off the most recent program year with two big events: a bus tour of all our centers by our Board of

Directors and a meeting of all families enrolled in our program to discuss the important role of family engage-

ment and how we planned, with their help, to bridge the achievement gap.

Throughout the year, our Family Services staff participated in trainings designed to improve and increase fami-

ly participation in the early education of their children. Family Advocates put this training to use at their cen-

ters as they worked with individual families and Parent Committees.

The Achievement Gap is the significant disparity in academic performance between different groups of stu-

dents, such as students from higher-income and lower-income levels. Children from the highest socioeconomic

status (SES) have been read to 1,000 hours before kindergarten, while those from the lowest SES have only

been read to 25 hours.

We began the program year with a meeting of all parents & guardians. We provided families with information

about the Achievement Gap and how we planned to bridge this Gap through a reading program. We asked each

family to read to their child daily and to keep and turn in a weekly reading log.

We held book drives throughout the year to collect books for parents to share and read to their children and at

the end of the year, families had spent 3,813 hours reading to their children! We will continue to ask family

members to read to their children and turn in weekly reading logs.

With the help of “celebrity” readers, we held “Thanks for Reading Days” the week of Thanksgiving. Volun-

teers visited and read to children in their classrooms. The Cat in the Hat and Raggedy Ann each made appear-

ances at centers, reading to children.

Also, throughout the year we held “Beyond the Sandbox” Tours. Board members invited friends and associates

to tour one of our centers. These tours last one hour and provide visitors with an opportunity to see first-hand

the services we provide to children and their families. These tours often result in individuals volunteering with

Kids Incorporated, collecting and donating books, diapers, and other center supplies, and have led to new board

members!

During the program year the Parkway Early Head Start Center was accredited and our remaining centers were

all re-accredited.

At the end of the year, as a result of the declining population in the Greenville community, we made the diffi-

cult decision to close our first Early Head Start center, Clifford Brown Bright Beginnings. We are now serving

12 children and their families in Madison County through a home-based program using the FSU Home-based

EHS Curriculum. This enables us to serve the most needy families with infants and toddlers, many of whom

live in more rural areas of the county and who often do not have reliable transportation.

Our Mission:

Supporting and education families with young children

through quality early learning, health and family services.

Kids Incorporated is the only community-based, United Way member organization providing quality,

comprehensive Early Head Start services to at-risk families with children ages 0-3 and pregnant women at

six locations in Jefferson, Leon & Madison counties, Florida. Through these services to infants and toddlers

and their families, we are shaping futures and strengthening families in the communities we serve.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Quality, Early Education Services:

220 children attend a center with a 1-teacher-to-4 child ratio. Teachers utilize The Creative Curriculum for

Infants, Toddlers and Twos and conduct on-going assessments and document progress using portfolios with obser-

vation notes, photos, videos & work samples. Teachers use on-going assessment and results from three official

checkpoints a year to individualize planning that meet each child’s needs. Teaching Strategies GOLD identifies a

child’s approximate developmental age and skills in physical gross and fine motor, language, literacy, cognitive,

math and social-emotional skills. Natural playscapes provide outdoor classroom space that also support each of

these learning domains.

Health, Nutrition and Disability Services:

Kids Incorporated maintains an enrollment of no less than 10% for children receiving Part C services.

Through a partnership with Children’s Home Society, appropriate therapeutic services are provided to children

in their classroom. Also, children receive breakfast, lunch and a healthy snack each day. A Health and Disabil-

ity Coordinator helps families identify a medical home for their child and ensures all children are up-to-date on

all immunization and health needs. An oral health exam is provided annually and health education training is

provided to all families. A nutritionist assist the cooks in developing healthy menus. A mental health consult-

ant provides on-going mental health support to children, families and staff.

Prenatal Services:

Our Health and Disabilities Coordinators work with 42 prenatal women and their families, ensuring the mom-

to-be has a medical home and access to information and services specifically designed to meet their needs. Fam-

ilies are encouraged to participate in all the Family Engagement Services and activities. Within two weeks of

delivery, the Health and Disability Coordinator and Family Advocate will pay a home visit to the new mom and

help ensure mom, baby and the family are all doing well.

Family Engagement Services:

Family Advocates encourage parents to be engaged in all aspects of their child’s development. Each family

completes a Family Matrix to help guide them and the Family Advocate in identifying areas of community re-

source needs. An individual family plan is developed to address those unique needs and goals of each family,

while respecting the family’s values and beliefs. Family Advocates provide resources, training, referrals and form

community partnerships that assist families in meeting their short-term and long-term goals. Through parent

engagement activities, families gain the knowledge to become their child’s primary nurturer, teacher and advo-

cate and have the opportunity to be actively engaged in their child’s education. Families also receive multiple

opportunities to connect with community resources. Our Male Involvement program encouraged the participa-

tion of dads, granddads and other male figures in the lives of the children we serve. A Steering Committee helps

plan and carry out activities throughout the year at each of the centers.

Success in Child Outcomes

Kids Incorporated uses Teaching Strategies Gold as our child assessment tool which

defines widely held expectations of developmental levels for children in all school

readiness domains. These graphs show overall progress gained over time in each domain

for all children enrolled in our Early Head Start program. These results demonstrate

checkpoint assessments at the beginning of the program year and at the end of the year.
