OnDecember14,2015ameetingwasheldat thehomeofPresident,ArleneCarson todiscussconcernsraisedbythreemembersregardingtheNoticeoftheAnnualMeetingoftheShawGuild.

DuetoatechnicalfaulttheofficialNoticeoftheAnnualMeetingoftheShawGuilddatedNovember5,2015wasnotreceivedbyGuildMembers.NeithertheExecutiveCommitteenorthememberswereawareofthisuntildaysfollowingthemeeting.
At the end of October,Members had received an invitation to the AGM to include thecustomary Members Day presentation and reception. Attendance at the AGM of 150memberswasthestrongestever.AllMotionsmadewerecarried.
SincetwooftheMotionsrequiredthatMembersreceivenoticeatleast14dayspriortothemeeting itwasdecided at theDecembermeeting that the approval of theMotionswouldbedisregardedandtobesorecordedfromtheminutesofthemeeting.

InmytermasPresidentIhaveseenexcitingchangesandnewbeginnings.The2016season,wasa grand finale to Jackie Maxwell’s fourteen years as Artistic Director of the Shaw. We werefortunatetohaveJackieasourguestattheSummerCelebrationgivingustheopportunitytosaygoodbyeandwishherwellinthenextchapterofhercareer.TimCarrollofficiallytookoverasournewArtistDirectoronOctober1stafterworkingbehindthescenes for thepast yearpreparing to launch the2017 season.AtMembersDay inOctober, hegaveusanoverviewofhisnewideasforthefutureoftheShawandnextyear’sexcitingplaybill.IthasbeenapleasuretogettoknowTCandIlookforwardtotheGuildworkingwithhimtohelprealizehisvision.Many of you have had the opportunity tomeet our ExecutiveDirector, Tim Jennings. Tim hasbeenagreatsupporteroftheGuildsincehisarrivalandafaithfulattendeeatallourevents.Hehas secured the “Shaw Bus” from Toronto to the Festival Theatre with service from April toOctober.Anothercoupistheacquisitionof178VictoriaStreetinthedowntownarea,adjacenttotherearoftheRoyalGeorgeTheatre.Thepropertywillprovidemuchneededartisthousingandthegalleryspacewillbeusedforeducationaleventsandartistsupportsuchasworkshopsandclasses.HavingtheopportunitytoworkwithTimhasbeenoneof thehighlightsofmytermasPresident.The2016GardenTour, cornerstoneof our fundraising endeavors, nettedover $25,000. ChairAlanWalker,theGardenTourcommitteeandallthevolunteersworkedveryhardtomakethisyear’stourahugesuccess.AlanisretiringfromtheexecutiveandIwouldliketothankhimfortheenormousamountoftimeandefforthehasinvestedduringhistermasFundRaisingChair.Planning for thenext year’s tourbegins as soonas the current tour finishes. FrancaMosswasappointedasGardenTourConvenerandwithhercommitteehasbeenworkingtosecuregardensfornextyear’stourcelebrating“newbeginnings”.RetiringfromtheExecutiveisPeterGill,agenerousandsupportivecolleaguewhohasservedontheexecutiveasVicePresident,PresidentandforthelasttwoyearsasPastPresident.IwishtothankPeterforhisleadershipandguidanceoverthelast6years.AlsoretiringfromtheexecutiveaftertwotermsisourSecretary,SusanKellyKister.Onbehalfoftheexecutive,IwouldliketothankSusan,forallhertime,effortandmeticulousdocumentationoftheGuild’sbusiness.ActivitiesChair,LaurieHarley, isretiringfromthatposition,butshewillnotbe leavingus.Herextraordinary executive skills will be put to good use as she moves into the position of Vice

President. I would like to personally thank Laurie for another great season of fabulous Guildactivitieswithrecordbreakingattendance.This yearMargMatherwas appointed Convenor of the Greeters. The positive impact of theirpresenceatmatineesledtoatrialrunofgreetingateveningperformances.ThankyoutoalltheGreetersforanotherseasonofwelcomingpatronstotheFestivalTheatre.TheroleoftheGuildHostsasambassadorscontinuestosettheShawFestivalapart.Thehoursspenthostingat the theatres continues tobeamajor contributionof “volunteerpower” to theShaw. Coordinating the hundreds of time slots fromApril toOctober is the job of theHostingChair,PennyAugustine,andherHostingCaptains.Thankstoallwhostepupwhencalledupontohost,evenwhenyouhaveseentheshow!TheDocents had a record breaking season in numbers of tours and patrons, busier than everwithschoolgroupsandfamiliescomingtoseeAliceinWonderland.The“Alice”tourdesignedforyoungerpatronswasabighitthissummer.SpecialthankstoElaineEvansforworkingwithmetocreatethistourThankstoDocentChairMikeRetzikforcoordinatingthebusyscheduleandtoLindsayThomsonforherassistancetotheDocentChair.ThevolunteersintheShawTheatreGardenswereawardedrecognitionthisyearasNiagara-on-the-Lake’sVolunteersof theYear.Congratulations toChairPaddyParrandallof thegangwhoshowuponTuesdaymorningsto“digin”.ThankstoDougHarleywhosteppedinthisyearandtookcareofthedistributionof“PlayingThisWeek”andothercommunicationsessentialtothepromotionoftheShawFestival.One of the most exciting developments over the past two years has been the influx of newmemberstotheGuild.JaneCalver,ourMembershipChairrecordsandorganizesallthevolunteerhoursspentbyourmembers.Wearestill interested in learningaboutyourhiddentalentsandcorporateskills,sobesuretoaddthesetoyourmembershiprenewal.The convenience of on-line payment has been put in place thanks to our Treasurer DonnaBertram.Inadditiontokeepingtrackofbudgets,shealsoputtogetherandupdatedthemanualsforsomeofthevolunteeractivities.Communications Chair JenClark, has been a great resource for all of the executive, setting upexecutive emails, sending out e-blasts and newsletters aswell asmanaging ourweb site. ThewebsiteisagreatwaytofindoutaboutGuildactivitiesandupcomingevents,aswellasviewingphotosandarticlesaboutpastevents.I have enjoyedbeing theGuild representativeon the ShawBoardofGovernors.With anynewrole there isa learningcurve. Iamgreatly indebted to JanetHanna forall the timeshespendssupportingtheGuildandservingasourliaisontotheShaw.Thankyouallforyoursupportand

wordsofencouragementover the last twoyears. Ihope that Igot it rightmostof the time.Anorganization likeourssucceedsonthestrengthof thosewillingtospendanextrahour,doonemoreshift,orfillinatthelastminute.TheproofofthisisaneventliketheWonderlandFairethatcametogetherquicklyandsuccessfullybecauseofwillingvolunteers.Finally,aheartfelt“thankyou”totheentireexecutivefromwhomIhavelearnedsomuch.IlookforwardtomynewroleasPastPresidentandworkingwithJulianRanceandLaurieHarleyintheirnewroles.IthasbeenaprivilegeserveasthePresidentoftheGuild.ArleneCarsonPresident

ProposedAmendments-ShawGuildBy-laws
Per Article XVI of the Shaw Guild By-laws, the procedures to be followed to makeamendmentsareasfollows:
1. Anyproposedamendmentstotheby-lawsshallbepreparedandpresentedtotheExecutive Committee, approved by the Membership, then sent to the Board ofGovernorsoftheShawFestivalforfinaladoption.
2. By-laws may be amended or repealed at an Annual Meeting or at a SpecialMeetingoftheGuildbyanaffirmativevoteofamajorityofMembersattending(inpersonorbyproxy)providedthattheproposedactionisincludedintheNoticeofMeeting.
3. Not less than fourteen (14) days prior to an Annual Meeting, or any SpecialMeetingoftheGuildatwhichtheamendmentsaretobepresented,acopyofsuchamendmentsmustbesenttoeveryMember.
Article IV Membership, Section 2: The Executive Committee is proposing, that asnecessaryinindividualcases,amemberofoneyearandingoodstandingbeeligibletostandforofficeintheGuild.

InthisyearasyourPastPresident,IorganizedtheNominatingCommitteewhichthoughseveralmeetingsandinterviews,identifiedandselectedcandidatesforvacantpositionson the Guild Executive. As youwill see, we have selected excellent candidates for thecomingterm.IhavealsoenjoyedarrangingnumerousOrientationmeetingsforourmanymemberswhojoinedtheGuildthisyear.

Thisyear theGreeterprogrammecontinued forallmatinéesat theFestivalTheatre. InOctober this year the programme was extended to evening performances also. Manythanks toMargand JohnMather forcontinuing toorganize thissuccessfulprogramme.TheShawFestivalhasreceivedverypositivefeedbackfromPatrons.
The“Playingthisweek”distributionthisyearcontinuestobeasuccessandmanythankstoDougHarleyandhis team for their contribution to thesuccessof theShawFestival.Dougrevampedtheprogrammethisyeartomakeitmoreefficientandtoensurethattheinformationgottoasmanypeopleandorganizationsaspossible.Doughastostepdownfrom the programme due to other commitments. We are very fortunate that MarianBarwellhasvolunteeredtotakeovermanagementofthisprogrammefornextyear.
This year saw an incredibly successful Activities programme. Many thanks to LaurieHarleyandherteamforputtingononeofthebestseriesofeventsthatIhaveseeninmytimeintheGuild.

ACTIVITIESCHAIR’SREPORT
2016wasanotheroutstandingyearfortheActivitiesTeam!
Wearedelightedthatsomanymembers,particularly thosenewto theGuild,cameoutfor our events this year. Overall attendance increased by 11% over 2015. And thatfollowsa17%increasebetween2014and2015. Ourvenueshavebeenquite literally“burstingattheseams”.
Thereweremanyhighlightstoremember.WelaunchedtheseasoninMarchwithahugeturnout for the Scene Shop visit; welcomed spring with a successful Presidents’LuncheonandShow&Tell;enjoyedadressrehearsalfor“AWomanofNoImportance”,experiencedaverywarm Julyevening for the thirdannualSummerCelebration. Thisyearwe ventured “down the rabbit hole” to join theMadHatter’s teaparty. A specialthank you to the members who came out decked in their finest “mad” hats. Yourcreativity was amazing!! In August, the Activities Team had a unique opportunity toassistShawstaffinthehighlysuccessful“WonderlandFaire”thatraisedover$10,000forlocal children’s charities.And finally, after viewing a set changeover in September, andturning out in record numbers to cheer on the Shaw Cricket Team, we closed theActivities calendar in October with Tim Jennings and Tim Carroll as our guests atMembers’ Day. Over 160 members filled the Studio Theatre to hear from our newExecutiveteamwhat’sinstorefor2017.
NoneoftheseeventswouldhavebeenpossiblewithoutthecreativityanddedicationoftheActivitiesTeam-AnnieHolcomb,KateVerweij,LindaBaines,MarilynAllevato,Dianeand Kent Chisholm,Mona Babin, andour faithful photographer, RenéBertschi. We’veenjoyed continued strong support from Shaw management, particularly Janet Hanna,JuliannaUguccioni,andAngelaCreemerandherGreenRoomstaff.
As this ismy final year as Activities Chair, I’d like to say a special “thank you” to theExecutiveCommitteewhohas allowedourTeam todreamand experiment, and to the

COMMUNICATIONSCHAIR’SREPORT
The ShawGuild communicationswent through a complete overhaul this year,with anentirely new website, updated newsletter format, new e-blast templates, and anincreasedsocialmediapresence.
The new Guild website is accessible, works better on mobile devices, and has beenoptimized for search engines. Thewebsite has also been used for online registrations,which seems to be working well for members and streamlines administration for theActivitiesChair.ThankstoLaurieHarleyforherpatiencewhileweworkedthroughtheglitches.
Another important feature of the new site is the Members Section. This is especiallyuseful tomemberswhowant to check for emails theymay havemissed or deleted bymistake.Thesectionarchivesalleblastssentouttomembers.Inaddition,linkstoeblastsandnewslettersarepostedtotheShawGuildFacebookpage.Thereare lotsofwaystofindus!
A big thank you to all of the executive for sending me content for each issue of thenewsletter.AndaspecialthankstoTerryBabij&RenéBertschiforsharingtheirphotos–thenewsletterwouldnotbethesamewithoutthem.

I ampleased to report that the11thannual ShawGuildGardenTour, held on SaturdayJune 4th2016, was attended by 1017 people and raised $29,712 in gross revenue,resultinginnetrevenueof$25,635.
TheTouristhemajorfundraiserfortheShawGuildandisconsideredbymanyasthepremiereventofitstypeintheNiagararegion.
The2016GardenTourowed itssuccess toavarietyof factors; thebeautyof theGardens, thefinancialsupportofourPlatinumSponsor(MoriGardens),ourindividualGardenSponsorsandourDoorPrizeDonors.

ThededicationandhardworkofourGardenManagers,and100+GardenVolunteers,theinvolvementofMasterGardenersand the supportof JanetHannaat theShawFestival,werealsoessentialtotheTour’ssuccess.
Finally, IwouldberemissinnotmentioningthesignificantcontributionoftheSteeringCommittee,whichIhadtheprivilegeofChairing.Accordingly,onyourbehalf,Iextendmygratitudetothefollowingindividuals;TerryBabij,PeggyBell,VickyDownes,RonaGray,FrancaMoss,andKitThompson.
Webelieve that that ourpatrons’GardenTour experience is of paramount importanceandtogaugethis,weonceagainorganizedapostTourSurvey.

The planning has begun in earnest for the 2017 version of the Tour, and I wish mysuccessorandtheSteeringCommitteeasuccessful2017Tour.
• ShawGuildandShawCorporateFundraisingPilotProject
The ShawGuild recently launcheda 2 year pilot project, partneringwith the ShawonCorporateFundraisingInitiatives.Bothrecognize that theGuildmembershiphasawealthofexperienceandconnectionsthatcouldbeleveragedtoreachouttocorporateentities.
Asaresultofthefirsteffortsofthisnewpartnership,Shawwasawardedacashgrantof$2,000 from the IBM Community Grants Program, in recognition of the continuingvolunteerismofIBMretireeswhoaremembersoftheShawGuild,andwhoworkedwiththeShawtoapplyfor,andsecure,thegrant.TheGrantwillbeusedtosupporttrainingfortheplannedexpansionofthe“ContinuetheConversation”programin2017. This isan initiative,startedthisyear,whereaudiencemembers are invited to engage in discussion about the intellectual and emotionalmeaningoftheplayinafacilitateddiscussionfollowingtheperformance.

In addition to the IBM relationship, there are other opportunities currently beingpursuedtoincreasecorporatesupportfortheShaw.AlthoughtheShawGuildandShawCorporateFundraisingpartnershipisinitsearlystages,theresultssofarareencouragingandprovidetheimpetustojointlydevelopothersuchopportunitiesin2017.

HOSTINGCHAIR’SREPORT
There were 225 Guild Memberswho were activeHosts this year. In 2016, our GuildmemberswerescheduledasHosts (Frontdoorand/orMembersTerrace) forallof theregular Festival Theatre performancesandwe addedhosting theMembers TerraceonFriday. Ourmembers hosted fromTuesdaymatinees through to and including FridayMatinees at the Royal George, Court House and Studio theatres. (Shaw ushers hostedperformancesfromFridayeveningtoSundayevening)
In2016Hostingvolunteerhours,whichincludeHosting,MembersTerrace,andHostingAdministrationandHostingCaptainsdutiescametoslightlyover3,000hours.
Thehostingfeetoseeaperformanceis$20.00. Manyofourhostsoptedtopurchaseaseason’spassratherthantakeachanceonnotbeingabletoattendaperformanceduetolackofseatingforvolunteers.
The amount collected from the hosting program for the 2016 season was just over$12,000.00.

The ShawGuild registered a total of 379members in 2016 andwewelcomed52newmembers.Weknowthatmanyofournewmembershaveenjoyedtheirfirstexperiencesasmembers and volunteers of the Shaw Guild andwill continue to support the ShawFestivalformanyyearstocome.
We have our three Honorary Members: Felicitas Mandeville, Anne Andres, andChristopherNewton.
Congratulations to these six members who have been Guild Members for 20 years;LyndsayDobson,NancyForsyth,CarolandTomMullen,BeaSmithandDorothyWilliams.EachofthesemembersisreceivingaspecialShawGuildpininrecognitionoftheirlong-termdedicationasvolunteersinsupportoftheShawFestival.Ourthanksgoouttothem.
Thisyear,ShawGuildmembersput inmorethan11,000volunteerhours insupportofThe Shaw. This indicates their dedication and commitment in somanyways. SHAWTHEATREGARDENSCHAIR’SREPORT
Season 2016 proved to be an extraordinary year for the Shaw gardens, with manypositive changes. Twenty-eight Guild Members, including seven new-comers, bravedone of the hottest seasons in history, tomaintain the gardens everyTuesdaymorning.Ourteamefforts,underthegreen-thumbguidanceofTeamLeaderPeggyBell,resultedinanexcessof1,200volunteerhoursbeingserved.
Alongwithournormalweeklytasksmaintainingthegardens,thehighlightofourseasonhas beenwatching the creation of the fully accessible secret gardenon the east lawn.ThisamazinggiftfromagenerousdonorcommencedinlateNovember2015. Thefourmonthprojectprovidedamuchneededtransformationofanovergrownandtiredareaofthe Festival gardens, creating a fresh and inviting gem for all patron and companymember’s enjoyment. The existing lower pond received a facelift, and the new hedgepromises to bring back the former ‘secret enclosure’, in years to come. The Guildgardenerswelcomethisnewareatoourlistofresponsibilities.
Anothernewly createdarea comingunderourumbrella, is theRoyalGeorgeWineBarTerrace.Onceagain,carehasbeengiventoincreasetheShawexperiencebyprovidinganoasis to enjoy pre-show and interval gathering in a fully accessible greenspace.Whatcouldbebetterthananoutdoorlobbywithlushplantingsandfreshair!
Thesummerof2016broughthugechallenges forwegardeners. Wespentourseasonfacingthedroughthead-on. Vastamountsoftimewasspenthand-wateringbothattheFestivaland theGeorge. Creditgoes to thededicationofourmembershipwhopolicedthewaterlevelspracticallydailytominimizeplantlosses.Ourweeklytasksofweeding,trimming, pruning, mulching, deadheading and screening all paid off as we are nowAWARD WINNERS! Our local Communities In Bloom Program presented us with anOutstandingVolunteerAwardinlateAugustforoureffortstoputourbestfaceforwardfor the program judges, and most recently we received a 21st Annual VolunteerRecognitionAwardfromtheTownofNiagara-on-the-Lake.
Personally,Iammostproudofthisdedicatedgroupwhounderstandthatwehavebeengiven the responsibility to create the first impression of Shaw Festival. Our goal is tomirrortheexcellenceonstage,andIfeelwehaveachievedthat!
