Preamble
In 2016, for Transilvania University of Brașov, the intensification of the internationalization process became a strategic priority. In this respect, the general objective of increasing the visibility at the international level, as well as the quality of the education and scientific-research processes, by extending the cooperation with relevant institutions, both of the European Union countries, and of non-European countries was established.
According to the Internationalization Strategy approved by the University Senate, achieving this objective, integrated into the overall Development Strategy, will contribute to the University’s adaptation to the current international context of higher education and of an ever-changing environment. The achievement of the aforementioned objective, involves creating and implementing measures that will ensure the realization of the following specific objectives, during 2016 – 2020:
(1) Increasing the number of study programmes taught in foreign languages (including partnerships with other Universities), especially of Master’s Degree and Ph.D. programmes;
(2) Extending the cooperation with the foreign companies in Brașov area, and abroad, for practical placements and internship stages;
(3) Supporting and stimulating the academic staff teaching in the framework of the study programmes in foreign languages;
(4) Stepping up the University’s efforts, with a view to stimulating the participation of the teaching staff and students in international mobility-exchanges and collaborations;
(5) Providing financial support to an internship program abroad, for the teaching staff and young researchers within the University;
(6) Identifying and implementing the necessary measures, with a view to developing the language skills of the academic staff, the administrative staff and the students;
(7) Improving the international students’ accommodation process, by involving the Romanian staff and students, in the former’s adaptation process to university and city life;
(8) Organizing regular events for the international students; (9) The University/ Faculty representatives’ participation in international events
dedicated to promoting the educational and research offer, and to recruiting foreign students;
(10) Stepping up attracting specialists, teaching staff and students from abroad, with a view to their conducting activities within Transilvania University.

Own Funds
In response to the needs of the institution to strengthen its ability to attract funds
through international projects and increase its visibility by disseminating the
research results in leading international publications relevant to the fields of
scientific research in the university, the institutional development project CNFIS-
FDI-2016-0075, called Internationalization – a strategic tool for increasing the
visibility and improving the quality of Transilvania University of Brașov was
implemented. The project, in total value of 298000 lei, enabled
o The stimulation of the international mobilities of academics and researchers
in order to develop joint research teams - by providing financial support for
23 academics and researchers,
o A better access to students and academics involved in international
mobilities to information and communications technology resources (ICT) –
by the establishment of the International Centre for ICT Resources, integrated
within the free access room of the Transilvania University Library.

Partner institutions At the end of 2016, Transilvania University of Brasov had 373 partner institutions
(mostly universities) from 54 countries from around the world: Europe, North
America, Central and South America, Central Asia, South and East Asia, Middle East,
Africa. Of these, 298 universities belong to the European Union and associated
countries, from the Erasmus+ Programme. The others represent 75 partner
institutions from 27 countries outside the European Union.

International mobilities of academics, administrative staff members and
students from Transilvania University
During 2016, 274 academics and researchers from Transilvania University have been
abroad on the occasion of various professional-related activities within 598 missions:
teaching and training activities within the frame of Erasmus+ Programme + : 116;
participation in international scientific events (conferences, congresses): 170;
participation in documentation / research / training / study visits and exchanges:
139;
participation in projects activities / international research contracts: 81;
participation in symposiums, training seminars: 30;
participation in activities related to the promotion of the university: initiating
collaboration / cooperation agreements, meetings of international networks - as a
member: 40;
participation in courses / international summer schools: 13;
participation in activities for the recognition of professional prestige: teaching
courses / invited to be part of external evaluation committees or doctoral
committees: 9.
It is worth mentioning the permanent concern of the university for the training of the
administrative staff: in 2016, 21 employees from this category have benefited from
training sessions and exchanges, in 28 missions with financial support from the
Erasmus+ Programme (14) and from the university funds (14).
During the academic year 2015-2016, 358 students have benefited from funding for the
development of international mobilities, as follows:
mobilities for study: 141 (of which 117 in universities in the European Union and
associated countries and 24 universities in Partner Countries);
mobilities for work placements: 117;
participation in international competitions (Formula Student, Forestry Versatility,
sports competitions): 39;
participation in documentation / research / study visits: 31;
participation in international conferences and summer schools: 14;
participation in international voluntary activities: 5;
participation in activities within the frame of international scholarships (DAAD
Scholarship, Transilvania University Scholarship for the Chinese Language and
Culture Summer School at the Confucius Institute from Jianzhu University): 11.

Academics from abroad who have visited Transilvania University in 2016, for the
following activities:
participation in conferences, workshops, summer schools etc. hosted by UTBv:
486 - from 51 countries from Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas;
participation in educational or research projects with UTBv as coordinator or
partner: 108 - from 24 countries in Europe and Asia;
participation in other events (study visits, invited as Visiting Professors etc.): 166

Other relevant aspects of the internationalization process in 2016
preparing the documentation for the establishment of the MA program taught in
English "Forestry for Multiple Purposes" within the field of Forestry; the
documentation has been forwarded to the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance
in Higher Education for review and approval;
covering the travel expenses for academics from abroad invited as "keynote
speakers" in international conferences organized by UTBv;
providing financial support (tuition fee exemption and free accommodation in the
university’s dormitories) for doctoral students from Ecuador and China;
providing free accommodation in the university’s dormitories for a group of
university students in Mexico;
organizing, in May and December 2016, the International Students Cultural
Night Out event for the international students of UTBv;
initiating, from the academic year 2017-2018, of the Transilvania Academica
Scholarship program, through which the university will award, from its own
funds, based on competition, scholarships for the best performing international
students;
continuation of its partnership with the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie
(AUF) for developing projects through the Academic Success Center UTBv;
continuation of the activities conducted by the French Lectorate and Fulbright
Lectorate;
continuation of the activities of the Confucius Institute.
