The Université de Montréal and its two affiliated schools,
HEC Montréal and École Polytechnique, form Canada’s
second largest university complex.
The Université de Montréal is second in Canada’s Top 50
Research Universities List 2006, situating it at the forefront
of Québec universities in the field of research.
The Université de Montréal is the only North American
Francophone university rated among the world’s top
200 universities according to the two most recognized
international rankings, The Times Higher Education
Supplement and Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic
Ranking of World Universities.

Rector’s Message
THE UNIVERSITÉ DE MONTRÉAL FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS IN 1878 TO
FEWER THAN A HUNDRED STUDENTS. THIS YEAR, IT WELCOMED MORE
THAN 55,000. IN QUÉBEC, CLOSE TO ONE OUT OF FOUR STUDENTS
ATTENDS OUR INSTITUTION AND ITS AFFILIATED SCHOOLS, AND EVERY
YEAR 10,000 OF THEM EARN A DEGREE. THIS INDICATES THE RESPONSI-
BILITY WE HAVE IN TERMS OF TRAINING, GUIDANCE AND EDUCATIONAL
ASSISTANCE.
This responsibility is one that the Université de Montréal assumes in every aspect of itseducational mission, by keeping its sights on the same objective: to ready its students to becomeforces of change. Our University, which this year updated its internationalization strategy, makes every effort to remain attuned to the broader issues that are of concern to our society, and to put an international stamp on its programs. This is in keeping with the quality of educa-tion that we offer our students and the manner in which our graduates are claiming theirplace in today’s globalization. The Université de Montréal is a great research university. In five of the last six years, itranked second in Canada for total research income. The allocation of these funds mostlyrelies upon peer evaluation, which is in itself a measure of excellence and the most reliableindication of the quality of our professors’ projects. Such acknowledgement also testifies tothe major role played by our institution in the scientific development of our country and the education of future researchers.

It is a well known fact that Québec universities are going through difficult times on thebudgetary front, and the Université de Montréal is no exception. The last fiscal year resultedin a deficit of $35 million in the operating budget, which had the effect of doubling our accumulated deficit. This situation is of great concern and casts a shadow on an extremelypositive situation in all other sectors of our activities. This is why I am actively working tosensitize the Québec population and its representatives to the effects of the underfinancing of our universities. These difficulties must not prevent us from planning ahead and ensuring the University’songoing development. One of the keys to this development is conditional on the expansion of our campus – an expansion all the more motivated by the marked upswing in our studentpopulation and the explosion of our research activities. Last year’s acquisition of CanadianPacific Railway’s Outremont train yard is the first step in a program that aims to redeploy our teaching and research activities. This exhilarating project will mobilize members of theuniversity community, citizens of the adjoining neighbourhoods and representatives of civicorganizations alike. This ambitious undertaking, which will change the face of the University, represents a unique opportunity to rethink the layout of our facilities in line with the newknowledge paradigms of the 21st century. This report takes a novel look at the highlights of 2005-06. We decided to present an overview of our achievements through a sampling of the coverage they received in the media.Every day, our students and professors attract the attention of newspapers and electronicmedia. Their achievements are the pride of our community. Our great hope is that they arealso the pride of our whole society, inasmuch as real accomplishments are those that are shared. On reading this report, you will note that the Université de Montréal is present in oursociety and that it extends its reach abroad. Presence and reach: these two words epitomizethe nature of the contribution that the Université de Montréal brings to our community.

Charity begins at… one’s alma mater! The members of our community have along history of giving to the Université deMontréal, and in the last few years moreand more of them have chosen the path of planned donations. What is a planneddonation? It is the type of gift that allowsthe donor to optimize an immediate dona-tion thanks to financial, fiscal or estateplanning, or to postpone the payment of a contribution depending on his personalor family situation.
The planned donation can take manyforms: a bequest, a life insurance policydonation, securities, a charitable giftannuity, etc. Over the past year, severalUdeM professors and University officialsopted for this philanthropic formula.Marcel Boyer donated $500,000 to theDepartment of Economics EndowmentFund. Dr. Serge Carrière, former dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and his wifeIrène Lafond endowed the Dean’s Fundof this faculty with $500,000. Music profes-sor Luce Beaudet contributed a sum
of $100,000 to the Faculty of MusicStudent Grants Fund. Together, School ofOptometry Director Jacques Gresset andVice-Provost and Vice-Rector – PlanningPierre Simonet made a commitment, along with their spouses Nicole Fradet-
Gresset and Marie Lamarre, to a lifeinsurance policy donation totalling $300,000to be paid into a scholarship fund for mas-ter’s and doctoral students in optometry.

Dictionaries tell us that the french word “merci” comes from a Latin word for “salary, compensation”.The centuries have stripped it of its monetary meaning and given it the noble sense we are nowfamiliar with. From a term that originally referred to a donor’s gesture, the centuries have made it the expression of gratitude from the donee. There is a lesson to be learned from this semanticevolution: what we give always ends up being appreciated for its true value.

The launch of the Jean-LouisBaudouin Chair in Civil Law
is an extremely importantevent in my professional life.In one sense, it is the crown-ing achievement of my careeras a teacher, researcher and
writer. It is also a way for meto thank the Faculty of Law,
which has brought me somuch, and to pass the baton
to young civil law resear-chers, like the very first
chairholder, Benoît Moore.
JEAN-LOUIS BAUDOUIN, at the launch of the Jean-Louis Baudouin Chair in Civil Law
In the Middle Ages, books of hours were as much a
reflection of their owners’vanity and wealth as a mirrorof their devotion. I am verypleased to give the UdeMRare Books and SpecialCollections Division the
collection of facsimiles ofthese works that I haveassembled throughout my career as a book
history professor.
