ANNUAL REPORT
SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OF NORTH CENTRAL OHIO
2012 2013
SERVING INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN CRAWFORD, ERIE, HURON AND LORAIN COUNTIES.OUR MISSION: TO GATHER AND PROVIDE RESOURCES TO HUNGER-RELIEF AGENCIES
Summer BackPack ProgramIn conjunction with the Ohio Department of Education, we were able to launch this program to feed children struggling with hunger by supplying backpacks filled with nutritious food for the summer weekends. 15,450 backpacks were distributed during the 10-week program.
Building Our Volunteer BaseOver 1,600 people from all walks of life volunteered at Second Harvest, up 3% from last year. As a group, these dedicated volunteers donated over 12,650 hours of service, an increase of over 11% compared to the previous year. Volunteers lent a hand sorting and repacking donated food, filling children’s backpacks, packing mobile food pantry boxes, handing out produce at Farmer’s Markets and in a hundred other ways.
A complete list of volunteers is available for review at secondharvestfoodbank.org/about-us/our-volunteers.
Fundraising EventsOur three largest fundraising events, Generous Helpings, Harvest for Hunger and Holiday Cheer brought awareness and inspiration about hunger issues to hundreds of people this past year. More people than ever were able to visit the warehouse while attending the events; and in the process we also raised much needed funds to purchase food and grocery products.
Mobile Pantry We filled our truck and provided a food pantry on wheels to areas with little or no access to emergency food assistance and to under-served populations. This past year, we were able to serve nearly 3,080 families who would have been without access to food otherwise.
“More Capacity. More Impact. Less Hunger.” Campaign Since the construction of Second Harvest’s current facility our distribution of food and grocery products has tripled, and our logistical needs exceed our capacity to meet the growing needs of hungry families in the community. To fully address these needs, we embarked on a $3.5 million capital campaign, which will provide the necessary funding to build a new 40,000 square-foot distribution facility – with expanded space for shipping and receiving, storage, repacking and agency pickups.
In addition to supplying food and grocery products to our 104 hunger-relief agency partners, Second Harvest undertook several strategic initiatives:
FY 2012/2013 MAJOR INITIATIVES
Farmer’s MarketsWorking with local farmers and growers, we brought fresh, nutritious produce to families in need. In partnership with our food pantry network, we supplied over 2 million pounds of fresh produce to over 100 Farmer’s Markets, helping over 16,000 families.
BackPack Program for KidsEach week during the school year, 1,600 backpacks filled with nutritious, easy-to-access food found their way into the hands of children to ensure they had enough to eat over the weekend.

FOOD SOURCING
31 YEARS. 72 MILLION MEALS.The economy in Northeast Ohio is slowly improving, but hunger remains a critical issue for families, and especially seniors and children. For over 30 years, Second Harvest has been the leader in alleviating hunger in our community by distributing 87 million pounds of food and grocery products, equaling 72 million meals for families struggling with hunger. Our capacity to provide food and resources through our hunger-relief network has had a direct and lasting impact across our region.
OUR VISION FOR THE FUTUREOur ability to support and strengthen those devoted to addressing the issue of hunger has never been greater and yet, it is not enough. Looking to the future, we will utilize all of our resources in undertaking strategic initiatives aimed at expanding our capacity to bridge the gap and bring hope to the families we serve.
Our goal remains unchanged: More Food. Less Hunger.
