CEO’s Report Chairman’s Report

Hello members and friends, it is my great pleasure to present this, my first annual report as Chairman of Surfing WA.

As the Association moves into its 51st year it has achieved many great things over the last 12 months, including:

J The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro continued to cement its place on the World Surf League Championship Tour with fantastic surf at both Main Break and The Box for this year’s event.

J The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro was watched by millions of people all over the world, which helped Surfing WA to win Gold in the coveted Tourism WA Awards in the Major Events and Festivals category.

J Surfing WA took ownership of WA’s marquee longboarding event, the Albion Capital Whalebone Classic, from long-time stalwart Peter Dunn. Dunny has put his heart and soul into the Whalebone for many years and will continue to be closely involved with the event into the future.

J Surfing WA also took on the Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic, WA’s marquee SUP event.

J Continued growth and participation across all our sport development platforms including Surfing WA licensed surf schools and member boardrider clubs.

Of course none of this could happen without the efforts of Surfing WA CEO Mark Lane and his crew of tireless staff. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of work this little team manages to churn out. Thanks to every one of them.

Governance of Surfing WA is overseen by a very strong Board made up of representatives from the sport as well as independent directors. The Board currently has a great mix of skills which I believe will see the Association continue to thrive and grow into the future.

Normal healthy rotation within the Board this year saw the departure of Leon Norris and Tony van Merwyk. I thank both Leon and Tony for their fine contributions during their time on the Board, and I look forward to working with their replacements Jane Seman and Sam Dundas.

Special mention must go to previous Chairman Bob Welch who stepped down from that role at the 2014 AGM. Bob has been an integral part of the governance of Surfing WA for many years, and I thank him for staying on the Board and continuing to give us the benefit of his knowledge and experience while we search for the right replacement director to fill his very big shoes.

As I write this, the Board is in the process of finalising our new strategic plan. This will have a clear focus on consolidating surfing in all its forms as an integral part of the sporting and cultural landscape in this state. I believe that under Laney and his team, with the support of the SWA Board, there are big things ahead for surfing in WA.

Welcome to the Annual report for 2015 in what has been another successful year both in and out of the water. What has been particularly pleasing to note is that progress has been made at all levels of operation and across all codes now represented by the Organization. Regardless of how we are measured – either as a sport or as a business our results have never been better.

Strategically, we set out 3 years ago to create complete pathways for all surfing codes, from beginner programs right through to professionally sanctioned events. With the addition of 2 new marquee events in 2015 – Longboard and SUP events - that vision came much closer to completion.

Financially we have again tracked according to forecasts and delivered, as planned. In 2014/15, we invested over $4 million into programs, pathways, events and the development and delivery of the sport in WA, whilst improving the balance sheet via a modest surplus.

Our list of professionally run Licensed Surf schools continued to grow around the state providing opportunities for people of all ages wanting to get a taste and experience the thrill of surfing for the first time.

Our focus on developing the number of, and capacity within, Board rider clubs throughout the state, again showed growth. Not only did the growth occur in the number of clubs now affiliating with Surfing WA, but also the number of clubs accessing our club development grants was most encouraging.

High Performance surfing and strength and conditioning programs now exist in 5 locations through out WA (1 metro & 4 regional) – ensuring we cater for our growing number of regional members.

The busy events calendar was highlighted by the running of the 30th year of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in unbelievable surf. This event again surpassed previous online viewing records and generated in excess of $60m worth of media benefit to the state. The 10th Birthday of the Taj Small Fries and the 18th annual Albion Capital Whalebone Classic were amongst other event highlights for the year.

The Surfing WA in house media unit continues to generate value and coverage like never before. A new partnership with GWN7 ensured statewide coverage of our events and champions. This aspect combined well with our rapidly growing online presence, social media platforms and great support from community based print media.

Of course much thanks goes to our great partners. In particular HIF who continue to support our Event program and continue to work with us to improve the safety of our members via the HIF Water Safety and Jet Ski initiative.

SunSmart and Healthway continue to support surfing at all levels via a variety of participation programs and event pathways. The promotion of the SunSmart and Drug Aware messages are well documented through out the community as we continue to motivate people to lead healthy existences.

The Department of Sport and Recreation have continued to support our growth regionally as well as allowing us to focus on Club and High Performance development – all areas experiencing positive growth and results.

Our partnership with Tourism WA continues to deliver award-winning results via the economic and promotional values we achieve in this area.

valued partnerships were again renewed at local government level. Margaret River, Busselton, Stirling and Geraldton shires have been great supporters of surfing programs and events in their respective regions.

The challenge of delivering events, programs and seminars to our clubs and members that span across 3,500km of coastline has never been more evident. We are blessed to have such a loyal and valued group of contributors that make this possible - to those people, my sincere thanks.

The full time and casual staff of Surfing WA are some of the most skilled, passionate and committed people I have ever worked with. The quantity and quality of work that these people deliver out week in, week out is appreciated and very much valued.

In closing, we are fortunate to have attracted such a professional and skilled group of Board members. Led by Chairman Mike Best, the advice and hundreds of hours of voluntary time has been pivotal to our ongoing success. Their input has been injected with a purity that should be applauded and sincere thanks to outgoing board members Leon Norris and Tony van Merwyk. Special thanks to our outgoing Chairman Bob Welch for his leadership.

State Surf School Network

Developing skilled coaches and officials to raise the standard of program and event delivery remains a core Surfing WA strategic objective. Surfing WA accredits all nationally qualified coaches and judges in the state via our network of 28 clubs and 15 surf schools.

The judging coordinator is responsible for organising a minimum of 2 state judging courses across 3 codes, communicating relevant information regularly and creating professional development opportunities. Surfing WA is in a strong position to continue developing the judging pathway via our boardrider club network, offering club members and parents the opportunity to gain experience as beginner judges, right up to working with World Tour judges at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.

The network of Surfing WA licensed surf schools has grown again this year, with an additional 2 affiliated schools joining our network. The spread of surfing schools continues to grow each year, fulfilling Surfing WA’s strategic objective to offer the greatest number of people the chance to access and to engage in surfriding. WA has a diverse population spanning over a vast coastline and Surfing WA aims to provide for all community members regardless of age, ability, location and ethnicity.

High Performance

The Surfing WA High Performance program continues to operate as best practice in the country, endorsed by Surfing Australia.

Throughout the year West Australian athletes were offered a variety of opportunities as part of the High Performance program. During the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, State Talent Squad surfers attended a WA Institution of Sport and Department of Sport and Recreation Developing Champions workshop. These State Talent Squad surfers, parents and coaches also attended a presentation by Surfing Australia High Performance Centre Coach Clancy Dawson, Surfing Australia Sports Science Manager Dr. Jeremy Sheppard and World Championship Tour Surfer Adam Melling. Later in the year Clancy Dawson returned to WA to present a professional development session for High Performance coaches at Surfing WA. He then went on to assist coaches and State Talent Squad surfers at the second of the WA Junior Titles.

The development of elite junior surfers was demonstrated at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Yallingup in December, with stand out performances across all age divisions. Margaret River High School duo Jacob Willcox and Jed Mattinson took out the Under 19 Boys MR Shield, a fantastic achievement for junior surfing in the state.

International Events

This year marked the event’s 30th anniversary, with epic conditions testing the worlds best and attracting an audience measured into the millions. The website, webcast and social media reach grew exponentially partly due to the incredible swells resulting in enthralling live footage and terrifying wipeouts. The event received unprecedented media coverage via print, Tv, radio and digital media outlets.

The world-class facilities offered on site resulted in a 26% increase to daily visitor attendance, with Surfers Point yet again providing the best viewing platform for a surfing event anywhere across the globe.

Surfing WA member and Yallingup local Jay Davies was awarded the coveted Wildcard position at the event trials and attracted global media attention when he knocked out reigning World Champion Gabriel Medina in Round 2. Davies went on to beat former World Champion Mick Fanning, making it to the event quarterfinals.

The SurfAid Corporate Cup returned to the 2015 event, taking place at Surfers Point as a sideline to the main event. The tag team event raised a record amount of $110,000 for the SurfAid charity, which will go towards raising the living standards of remote communities in the Menawai Islands, Indonesia.

1. statement of significant accounting Policies This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (1987). The Board has determined that the Association is not a reporting entity. The financial report has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (1987) and the following Australian Accounting Standards:

(c) leases Leases of fixed assets, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to the ownership of the asset, but not the legal ownership, are transferred to the association, are classified as finance leases. Finance leases are capitalised, recording an asset and a liability equal to the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values. Leased assets are depreciated on a straight-line basis over their estimated useful lives where it is likely that the Association will obtain ownership of the asset or over the term of the lease. Lease payments are allocated between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for the period. Lease payments under operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are charged as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred

(d) cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities on the balance sheet.

(e) Property Plant & equipment Leasehold improvements and office equipment are carried at cost less, where applicable, and accumulated depreciation. The depreciable amount of all fixed assets are depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. Leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements. Property is held at fair value with any unrealised movements being recognised in the revaluation reserve. valuation by independent third party has been used to obtain fair value.

(f) receivables Trade receivables are recognised and carried at original invoice amount less a provision for any uncollectible debts. An estimate for doubtful debts is made when collection of the full amount is no longer probable. Bad debts are written-off as incurred.

(g) trade and other Payables Liabilities for trade creditors and other amounts are carried at cost, which is the fair value of the consideration to be paid in the future for goods and services received.

(h) revenue Revenue is recognised to the extent that it is probable that the economic benefits will flow to the entity and the revenue can be reliably measured.

(a) Basis of Preparation AASB 112 Income Taxes AASB 1031 Materiality AASB 110 Events after the Balance Sheet Date AASB 117 Leases No other applicable Accounting Standards, Australian Accounting Interpretations or other authoritative pronouncements of the Australian Accounting Standards Board have been applied. The financial report has been prepared on an accrual basis and is based on historic costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets. The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report.

(b) Financial Position The financial report has been prepared on an accrual basis of accounting including the historical cost convention and the going concern assumption. The directors believe the adoption of the going concern basis is justified.

(i) goods and services tax (gst) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office. In these circumstances the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the Statement of Financial Position are shown inclusive of GST.

(j) employee Benefits Provision is made for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to balance date. These benefits include wages and salaries, annual leave, and long service leave. Liabilities arising in respect of wages and salaries, annual leave, and any other employee entitlements expected to be settled within twelve months of the reporting date are measured at their nominal amounts. Employee benefits, expenses and revenues arising in respect of wages and salaries, non-monetary benefits, annual leave, long services leave, and other leave entitlements, and are charged against profits on a net basis in their respective categories. Contributions are made by the association to an employee superannuation fund and are charged as expenses when incurred.
