Dear Friend,

Where does a year go much less 10 years?

It is incredible to me that I have just passed my ten year mark at PSRC. And yet, when I reflect, I can see that so many things have changed.

We have become the “go-to place” for information and linkage to services for people who want to remain in their own homes as long as possible. We help people navigate life transitions and support family caregivers as they care for spouses, older parents, neighbors and friends.

We have a compassionate, professional, creative team of people who make PSRC what it is today: a lively, dynamic place where everyone feels welcome and community is built into every activity.

Currently more than 1200 people attend our programs every week. Our army of more than 550 volunteers are the people who make magic possible as they work in every aspect of PSRC’s activities. Now our social workers provide support to more than 125 people per week.

All of this growth requires infrastructure change. The budget and activities have doubled. We have new computers and cloud-based database. The board has created a strategic plan to guide the organi-zation and developed policies and procedures for the future. Our en-dowment is growing and our Human Capital Fund supports our greatest asset, the staff.

We continually seek ways to be on the leading edge of the field of aging and responsive to the needs of our participants, whether that is develop-ing programs to appeal to younger people or introducing social media.

InspirationFall Conference: Our Fall 2011 conference focused on practical strategies that family caregivers can use to make their responsibili-ties easier and their efforts more successful. More than 100 caregivers listened intently to professionals from local organizations and Thomas Jefferson University who shared dozens of techniques that family members can use for managing mood, mobility, activ- ities and other aspects of family care that otherwise might be daunting.

Living with Purpose: We hosted Living with Purpose, an event featuring three Purpose Prize® win-ners who had been nationally recognized by Civic Ventures for living out their passion in encore projects that are having a positive impact on their communities and the world. The event drew over 100 attendees, many of whom were younger and new to PSRC, and introduced the concept of encore careers.

EducationEvergreen Forum: The popularity of this program of college level courses continues to grow. We are in awe of the hundreds of older adults who can’t wait for the next semester of Evergreen Forum classes to begin.

How popular is Evergreen Forum? Enrollment has in-creased to more than 400.

Next Step: Engaged Retirement and Encore Careers: When the aging field began to anticipate the wave of Boomers entering retirement (10,000 reach 65 daily),

we initiated the Next Step: Engaged Retirement and Encore Careers program. The program now expanded and adapted to provide support for older workers and mid-life career changers during the recession.

Computer lab: The growth of interest in computer classes can be best described as an explosion. More than just learning a new technology, these classes enable our members to stay in closer touch with their children, grandchildren as well as distant friends.

This year we offered 104 classes ranging from advanced iPad instruction to an introduction to the Internet to video production. A technology grant en-abled us to install all new computers for our lab and for staff, too. We have a group of highly skilled volunteers who teach, as well as an ongoing ser-vice project with Princeton University students who help in the open lab on Tuesday afternoons.

CollaborationGrandPals: The expansion of one of our most popular volunteer programs, GrandPals, to an elementary school in Trenton is especially exciting. It began as a volunteer initiative, bloomed through collaboration and took off with enthusiastic volunteers who added an-other day to their busy lives. We continue to read to children at Littlebrook and Riverside schools and provide assistance to teachers at Community Park. Some of our volunteers are reading three or four times a week.

United Aging and Disability Partnership (UADP): A grant from the United Way provided funding so that nine agencies in the Greater Mercer area could work collaboratively to provide case manage-ment and a range of other services to support low and moderate income older adults and people with disabilities. PSRC assisted 87 clients and their families this year through UADP as well as dozens more outside the program.

PSRC collaborates with many other organizations and companies in the community to offer a wide range of programs and services. For example the Princeton Public Library hosts some of our Evergreen Forum classes and the Next Step speaker series.

We partnered with the Arts Council of Princeton to of-fer art classes for family caregivers. The Flu Shot Clinic and health fair are a collaboration with the Princeton Regional Health Department and the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro. Through Bloomberg’s extensive volunteer program, local employees installed new computers and software in our offices and lab.

TransportationFreeB: We successfully advocat-ed for the expansion of the FreeB bus to daytime hours and expanded routes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Now residents of Elm Court and Redding Circle, many of whom no longer drive, are able to get around town with ease. Even more, anyone in the community who lives within walking distance of the FreeB’s circuit can get to PSRC, Nassau Street stores, the shopping center, municipal buildings or the library during the day for free.

Crosstown: Many of our seniors were concerned about transportation to Merwick and the new hospital, especially to visit friends, once the two facilities moved across Route 1. We worked hard to extend the reach of our Crosstown taxi service to both facilities, even though they are outside the municipal limits and arranged for the rides to be free to passengers.

Culture Bus: Whether it’s an older adult who no longer drives or who doesn’t like driving at night, we know older adults still want to be able to enjoy an occasional night at the theater or look forward to Trinity Church’s One Table Cafe. We obtained a grant to fund “The Culture Bus” that provides transportation to events in the area.
