2016 was an eventful year! One of our bright spots was opening a satellite office in St. Clair Shores. This beautiful new space will help survivors from south end of Macomb County better access our counseling and advocacy services. With the new office came additional staff funded by the Victims of Crime Act. The new staff’s focus will be on helping children heal from domestic violence and sexual assault. In addition to opening our new office, we continue to be on site one day per week at the Mt Calvary Community Center. We continue to grow and adapt to the needs of survivors in our community.

We received a gift of $25,000 from 100 Women Who Care that adds staff for the 2017 school year to help more students receive prevention education programming. This program lost state funding 3 years ago and now depends solely on private donations to operate. Still the program reached 4,617 middle and high school students. This gift will make a huge impact! The program evaluation outcomes indicate a statistically significant difference in a student’s knowledge and skills on healthy relationships, how to help a peer, and the dynamics of interpersonal violence. Our work with youth is vital to our future and the success of our community.

I must add that we are very grateful to our public partners for without the foundation they provide we would never be able to offer the comprehensive safety and support services for so many. Special thanks to the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), Michigan Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention and Treatment Board, Macomb County, United Way and the local communities who support us through the Community Development Block Grant: Sterling Heights, City of Warren, St. Clair Shores, and Clinton Twp.

It certainly takes a village to make headway on our mission to end domestic and sexual violence! We could never accomplish all that we have over the past 36 years without our dedicated staff, board members, volunteers and donors. We are stronger and mightier because of you!

Sincerely,

Suzanne Coats, CEO

TURNING POINT ANNUAL REPORT 2016 2

Valentina Djelaj and Marco Ruggeri (both Turning Point volunteers) donated a portion of their wedding money to Turning Point in remembrance of her mother Maria Djelaj a victim of domestic violence murdered in 2008.

“I donate to Turning Point because I believe that in order for a society to be healthy, it needs to care for all of its members, especially those who are most vulnerable. I am grateful to be able to support their work. As a volunteer, I was able to witness first-hand the difference that Turning Point made in the lives of women and children. I cannot even begin to explain the extent of the need in our community or the ability of Turning Point to address that need at every level. I am in awe of the work done by the staff and volunteers at Turning Point. As a community, we need to continue to support their mission."

Being in shelter in summer months is very hard on kids. With support from Mt. Clemens Rotary and MGM Voice Foundation we provide the Self-Awareness & Fun Experiences (S.A.F.E.) Camp. At day camp, kids can leave behind their adult worries to have fun, educational adventures and enjoy activities that foster interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and understanding that domestic violence is never their fault.
