O u r V i s i o n a n d V a l u e sOur vision is that the pupils in our school should be encouraged to develop their individual skills and talents whilst providing them with opportunities to acquire further academic and social skills which will help them succeed and contribute not only now, but also in the future.

Our commitment to this vision means we will aim to:

To provide a caring, stimulating, happy Christian environment.

To have high expectations of all pupils: involving pupils setting targets for personal achievement.

To ensure all pupils have equality of opportunity.

To develop responsibility and self-discipline in all pupils.

To foster and develop good relationships with the church and local community.

To establish a school of which everyone is proud and within which everyone can work together.

Our mission statement:

Growing and Learning Together in a Christian Way runs at the heart of all we do at Gwenfo.

Our mission statement is based on our Christian Values of TRUST, LOVE, PERSEVERANCE, HONESTY, HOPE, GENEROSITY, COMPASSION, COURAGE, FORGIVENESS, FRIENDSHIP, RESPECT, THANKFULNESS, PERSEVERANCE, JUSTICE, SERVICE, TRUTHFULNESS.

The Governing body and the Headteacher share responsibility for the strategic management of the school, acting within the framework set by the national legislation and by policies of the Local Authority (LA).

Page 5: Annual Report - gwenfoprimary.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewNational Curriculum Outcomes 1, 2, and 3 describe achievements below level 1. D Represents pupils who have been disadvantaged

While the LA is the employer of staff, The Governing Body and Headteacher have separate and particular responsibilities for the selection and management of staff. The internal management of the school is the responsibility of the Headteacher.

The full Governing Body meets once every half term. In addition, sub- committees meet regularly to discuss specific issues. They report to the full Governing Body for formal ratification of proposals.

The minutes of Governing Body meetings are available from the clerk to the governors: Ms Rachel Cox at Vale of Glamorgan Governor Services.

L e tt e r f r o m o u r C h a i r o f G o v e r n o r sThe past year has seen the dawning of a new era for the school with a number of issues involved in the change.

We saw the school year start with Ms Starke in the role of Acting Head Teacher following the retirement of Mrs Simpson.

The school finally opened the doors of a nursery unit after many years of false starts and heart-ache trying to get one started. The numbers attending the unit rapidly rose to reach 75% capacity and is expected to reach 100% this following year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Wenvoe Playgroup for their invaluable co-operation in getting the nursery off the ground. They also continue to work with us to provide a ‘wrap-around’ provision for the nursery year children.

The school also received the notification of the long awaited inspections that took place in June. You may already know that, as a Voluntary Controlled Church-in-Wales school we have two inspections; the first being the standard ESTYN inspection (rating the school as ‘good’ in all areas), and the second being the Gwella Section 50 (Church) inspection (rating the school as ‘excellent’ in all areas.

The year also saw Year 1 in a new, larger, classroom that will allow the school to take up to 30 children in each year from 2017. As part of making that a more practical proposition, there are plans to make the final classroom extension to the old year 1 room.

Everyone on the staff deserves my thanks for their continuing efforts that led to such an amazing year, together with my fellow governors, but above all the children, of who we are continuously proud.

At Gwenfo C/W Primary School leaders have children’s safety, welfare and learning at the forefront of all decision-making. Each member of staff and each governor is a leader of at least one aspect of the school’s life, working as a strong team to improve and raise standards. Pupil voice, through the School Council and pupil voice groups, and parent consultation through regular meetings and surveys, mean that the whole school community is part of the consultation and decision making process.

The Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team works with all aspects of the school community to identify priorities, plan and action developments for these and to closely monitor impact and outcomes. The Governing Body monitors school improvement through regular meetings; it also spends time on scrutiny of documentation and ensures that a rigorous appraisal procedure of the Headteacher and staff adhere to. In all, the ‘Team’ ethos at Gwenfo C/W Primary School is key to the successful learning of all our children.

L e tt e r f r o m o u r A c ti n g H e a d t e a c h e rMiss Nicola Starke

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We reflect back on the achievements of last year with great pride.

This past year has marked a number of celebrations for us as a school. After a busy summer of building we were able to open our Nursery and extend the age range of our school from 3-11. We are thrilled with the new learning spaces extending our indoor provision for Reception pupils and a brand new larger classroom for Year 1 pupils. The outside space remains an area that we will, over time, return back to being a vibrant learning space. However, we are thrilled that despite improving the size of the school we still retain much of our beautiful grounds.

This year bought visits from Estyn and Gwella who both inspected standards, wellbeing and leadership across the school. Please do take time to read through our inspection reports, we are so incredibly proud of your children and how they told inspectors all about our school. We were able to celebrate our wonderful school family with them and were thrilled with their findings!

As a Lead Creative School we were able to use grants received to work with local story tellers and film makers to enhance pupils writing skills and made films to celebrate our learning. Next year we aim to focus on maths skills resulting in a willow creation in our grounds.

We have loved exploring the village and our community and have enjoyed using our local area fully, from trips to the pond, walks with the wildlife group, visits to Vicar Jon at St. Mary’s and singing to local residents. At Gwenfo we want to be a real part of the school community and will continue this focus next year developing our school grounds, spending more time exploring our wonderful village and of course working with as many local residents and volunteers as we can. Please do pop into school if you’d like to be involved in the life of the school.

Pupil Voice groups made a real difference last year, from warning parents about parking safely to encouraging parents to come and try one of our delicious school meals! Our School Council continues to make a positive difference to daily life in school.

We are excited to have new pupils and families join our successful and thriving school. We look forward to another successful year as we continue to work in partnership with parents to further improve standards.

Huge thanks go to the vibrant, creative staff at Gwenfô who continue to make our school family such a happy and successful one. We look forward to next year growing and learning together in a Christian way.

Yours sincerely

Miss Starke

C u r r i c u l u m O r g a n i s a ti o nThe curriculum is delivered to all pupils; pupils are grouped into 7 single age classes of mixed ability and gender with a 48 place nursery (24 morning places and 24 afternoon places)

All pupils follow the National Curriculum; teachers use a variety of teaching methods and strategies to meet the individual needs of our pupils, all lessons are differentiated to at least three levels. Literacy and Numeracy is taught in line with the Literacy and Numeracy Framework, R.E, Welsh and Science are all core subjects. We continue to refine and embed a cross curricular approach to develop the Foundation subjects: History, Geography, Art, Music, DT and IT.

We use the Cornerstones scheme to plan and deliver our cross curricular topics, the scheme have four distinct stages:

1. Engage, this introduces and stimulus to inspire and engage pupils interest. 2. Develop, this stage develops the pupil skills to research and gather information. 3. Refine, this stage practises and refines pupil skills. 4. Express, pupils present their learning, knowledge and skills to a wider audience.

The scheme is designed to be comprehensive, engaging, interactive and fun.

The school follows the syllabus of the Church in Wales for Religious Education and Collective Worship. The scheme is also linked to Personal and Social education and Emotional Wellbeing. We are well supported by our vicar, Rev Jon Ormrod who advises staff and leads a weekly worship and celebrates the Eucharist each term at school.

A d d i ti o n a l L e a r n i n g N e e d sSome of our pupils are identified as having additional learning needs. Pupils are identified by class teachers / parents following the end of year assessments, pupils making little or below average progress in literacy and or numeracy skills are placed on our Additional Learning Needs Register.

The register includes pupils at three different stages in the Code of Practice:

1. School Action 2. School Action plus 3. Statement

In 2016- 2017Twelve pupils are at School ActionSeven pupils are at School Action plusOne pupil has a Statement of Additional Learning Needs.

Page 20: Annual Report - gwenfoprimary.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewNational Curriculum Outcomes 1, 2, and 3 describe achievements below level 1. D Represents pupils who have been disadvantaged

Pupils are supported initially through a differentiated curriculum within the classroom. The pupils are supported by an appropriately trained Learning Support Assistant in the classroom individually or in small groups at School Action.

Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) provides specific interventions to pupils at School Action plus outside the classroom under the direction of the ALNco and external agencies.

Pupils with a statement are supported by external agencies and specialist teachers.

C o m m u n i t y L i n k sOur school enjoys very positive links with the community: the local church St. Mary’s plays a large part in the life of the school, Vicar Jon Ormrod leads weekly worship and celebrates Eucharist each term, parent, grandparents and local parishioners join the school community in the school hall.

The pupils also took part in the Christmas celebrations at the Vale Village church, based in Wenvoe.

The school supports the local Food Bank, with Harvest Festival, Advent and Lent offerings being offered to the Food Bank. The staff and school community continue to support the Food Bank during the year.

School takes part in annual Remembrance and Christmas celebrations in the Village. We enjoy strong links with the Village Playgroup and the local High Schools.

Members of the local community volunteer in school, working with the pupils on reading, sports and environmental tasks.

The local Community Support Officer, Owain Grandin, is a regular visitor to the school and assists with community issues. PC Emma Mudie delivers worskshop sessions for all pupils focussing on all elements of citizenship.

Many of the local businesses, Wenvoe Arms, Walston Castle, Pugh’s Garden Centre, Asda and Tesco support our fundraising events.

The school actively encourage community participation in school events through open days and social school events.

Page 21: Annual Report - gwenfoprimary.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewNational Curriculum Outcomes 1, 2, and 3 describe achievements below level 1. D Represents pupils who have been disadvantaged

W E L S HPupils learn Welsh throughout the school, each class has a daily ten minute session to practise incidental Welsh alongside their weekly lessons to develop vocabulary, and sentence patterns through topics. The teachers are supported by Mrs. Deb Durham, Athrawes Fro termly.

Welsh is used often within the school day with a daily 10 minute focussed session on language patterns as well as a weekly lesson. A pupil voice group (Criw Cymraeg) is dedicated to using Welsh around the School and encouraging others to use Welsh in day to day life.

The Welsh culture is embraced throughout the year in all areas of the curriculum; many of our educational visits are to local historical landmarks to encourage the children in their knowledge and understanding of the local area. St. David’s Day is celebrated in great style with inter-house competition, Welsh recitation, dance, music and poetry writing. Each year a Bard is selected and takes the Chair.

P u p i l s t r a n s f e r r i n g t o H i g h S c h o o lWe are very proud of the achievements of our pupils moving on to High Schools. We are encouraged by the feedback we receive from various schools the pupils move into. Without exception the schools tell us that the children are well prepared both academically and socially for the next stage of their education.

P o l i c y U p d a t eThe governors have a regular update of all school policies, normally through the Curriculum Committee although some, such as the New Model Pay Policy require the full governing body’s approval.

A full review of all policies has been carried out over the past 6 months.

M e e ti n g s w i t h t h e G o v e r n i n g B o d yYour right to request a meeting with the school’s governing body. The Schools Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013 (The Act) removed the requirement for school governing bodies to hold an annual meeting with parents. Instead, new arrangements were introduced to enable parents to request up to 3 meetings in any school year with a governing body, on matters which are of concern to them.

If parents wish to use their rights under the Act to hold a meeting, 4 conditions will need to be satisfied:

1. Parents will need to raise a petition in support of holding a meeting.

The parents of at least 10% of the school’s registered pupils [190 registered pupils will need to sign the petition. If it is a paper petition, then a written signature must be given as well as the name and class of each child who is a registered pupil at the school. If the petition is in electronic format, the ‘signature’ required is the typed name of the parent plus the name and class of each child who is a registered pupil at the school and the email address of each parent who ‘signs’ the electronic petition.

There were 190 children registered as pupils with this school at the beginning of this academic year. Exact roll numbers at any time during the year may be obtained from the school office.

2. The meeting must be called to discuss matters which affect the school.

The meeting cannot be called to discuss such matters as the progress of individual pupils, or to make a complaint against a member of the school’s staff or governing body.

The petition should contain brief details of the matter(s) to be discussed, and the reasons for calling the meeting. This information should be clearly displayed at the top of the petition, with parents’ signatures appearing below.

3. A maximum of 3 meetings can be held during the school year.

The law allows parents to use their rights to request up to 3 meetings with a school governing body during the school year.

Page 27: Annual Report - gwenfoprimary.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewNational Curriculum Outcomes 1, 2, and 3 describe achievements below level 1. D Represents pupils who have been disadvantaged

4. There must be at least 25 school days left in the school year.

The law makes it a condition that at least 25 school days are left in the school year when the petition is received so that the meeting can be held.

A “school day” means a day when the school is open to pupils: it does not include weekends, public holidays, school holidays or INSET days.

The address for service of a petition requesting a meeting with this school’s governing body is:

Mr. Norman Craggs, 92, Churchfields, Barry or Miss Rachel Cox c/o School.

Further advice on how parents may to go about requesting a meeting with a governing body is available on the Welsh Government’s website at:http://wales.gov.uk/topics/educationandskills/publications/guidance/parents-meetingsstatutory-guidance/?lang=en
