PRESIDENTS REPORT

2019-2020

The 61st South Pacific. Carnival commenced on Thursday 27th December 2019 through to Sunday 5th January

2020

My personal thanks to our Zone 16 Secretary Harry Herring and our Zone 16 Match Committee Member

David Tyrell who manned the official table daily, congrats to you both for a really great effort collating and

publishing all daily results. Also, to Adam Rogers bowls co-ordinator at Kiama Bowling Club, the host Club

for the prestigious Annual Event, The Carnival was again a huge success due to the combined efforts of the

host Club and Zone 16 executive Committee Members.

I acted as M.C. for the Presentation Function and Brett Duprez, who represented all Major Sponsors, presented

Trophies and prize money to those successful bowlers, my thanks to Brett. Shane Garvey was once again the

"player of the carnival" for the Sixth time, Shane has won this trophy in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2013, and

now in 2019, this record will certainly be hard to beat, Congratulations Shane. The carnival Host Club also

celebrated its 100 years milestone, Congrats Kiama.

Also, to Woonona Bowling and Recreation Club, who celebrated their 125th Anniversary on Saturday 14th

September 2019.

This year our Zone 16 teams have again performed well and are a credit to our Zone. Our young Bowlers won

the junior Metropolitan shield and our Senior Open Inter Zone sides won both at Grandview's Bowling Club

over a three-day period for each event. Zone 16 the only Zone that has won both events, the last time was in

2010, well Done! to all involved.

Our Vets and Super vet’s day attracted some 80 plus bowlers and our thanks to Warilla Bowls and Recreation

Club for again Hosting this event.

On a sad note was the closure of Collegians Orb bowling Club on the 31st December 2019, Collegians Rugby

League Football club was no longer prepared to maintain the green and support the dwindling number of

bowlers, both male and female. This club was established in 1955 and was extremely competitive in those

years, due to the closure many bowlers have joined other clubs and not lost to our bowling fraternity.

Thanks to all zone 16 clubs who have continued to support Zone 16 events during the year, and to our local

media WIN and the Illawarra Mercury for their excellent coverage of our bowling events during the year.

My personal thanks to the Executive Committee who have ably supported me during my 11 years in office,

in particular I would like to place on record my thanks to Brian and Angela Gibson for the long hours that

both expend to ensure that all goes well on the bowling front.

On behalf of our Zone I would like to thank Greg Helm C.E.O. of Bowls N.S.W. for his assistance in

updating our "out-of-date" Constitution. Our Executive Committee is currently working on the "draft" that

Greg sent to us to review.

To each member of our various Zone 16 committees a very a very sincere thanks to you for your outstanding

contribution to our Zone during the year under review. It is certainly a real pleasure to work with such

dedicated and loyal team of officials, Thank you all.

On behalf of all Members of Zone 16 our condolences and best wishes to all families who have lost love ones

during the year, our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Page 6: ANNUAL REPORT YEAR ENDING 31st MAY 2020

This year has certainly been one of challenge, Draught's, Bush fires and Floods and the latest to deal a real

blow to our bowlers is the advent of "COVID-19" which has thrown the whole of Australia into turmoil, Bowls

Australia has cancelled some major events with decisions still pending on others.

Bowls N.S.W. has advised all Clubs and Members of the need to continue practicing safe Hygiene and self-

distancing measures and to limit travel times as much as possible.

With continued support of our Clubs and members we will come through this crisis, a stronger, more resilient

sport for all to enjoy for many years to come

Ken Forbes

Zone 16 President

D.I.P ACC. (CES) D.I.P. OH&SM M.S.I.A M.I.C.O.H.

SECRETARY REPORT

2019 - 2020

It is with pleasure that I submit my report for 2019 -20. The Zone is in a strong position both administratively

and financially and for this I commend President Ken Forbes and those officers who have worked diligently

and given so much of their time for the benefit of the Zone. On the bowling front again thanks to Brian Gibson

and his match committee for another successful South Pacific Carnival hosted by Kiama Bowling Club. This

I believe is one of if not the most successful tournament of its type in New South Wales and maybe Australia.

Zone 16 brought the digital age to the South Pacific Carnival and has proved successful and is now being

phase in for all Zone 16 events, this has allowed for the viewing of draws and results on Zone 16 webpage

and Facebook in real time.

I have put my hand up for another year as I have enjoyed working for the bowlers of the Zone.

Congratulations to all our Zone pennant winners.

Jamie Nabbe (Warilla) & Natalie Noronha (Dapto Citz) as junior coach have now come on board to run the

Zone junior committee.

2019-20 has been a remarkable year firstly with to Woonona Bowling and Recreation Club, who celebrated

their 125th Anniversary on Saturday 14th September 2019 and Wollongong Wisemans Park Bowling Club

celebrating their 75- year Anniversary of operations.

Congratulations.

Unfortunately, Zone 16 is still experiencing lack of attendance by clubs at our management meetings, we have

21 member clubs and approximately we average eight (8) clubs attending.

For the Zone to continue operating in the interest of the clubs and their members, we require clubs to ensure

that they have representation at Zone management meetings.

MATCH COMMITTEE REPORT FOR 2019/20

Page 7: ANNUAL REPORT YEAR ENDING 31st MAY 2020

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for their patience during this terrible time of the Covid 19 virus.

The year was progressing very smoothly, even though it was very congested.

On behalf of the Match Committee, I would like to thank all the bowls Coordinators/Secretaries for their

assistance this year, also the Clubs that assisted us by letting us use their greens. Thank you to all the clubs

that sponsored zone events and allowed us to pay exceptionally good prize money. Entries were the best for a

long time in all events.

Green keepers deserve a mention too, as the greens were in good condition. We try and keep a good

relationship with them as they are often under-appreciated in my opinion.

I would also like to thank my Match Committee for their assistance during the year.

Once again, zone numbers remained steady at about 2650, only a very small decrease on the year before.

The Australian and State programs were realigned to flow better and were to not change much for the future,

but unfortunately a lot of events had to be cancelled due to the Covid virus, so next year could be uncertain

also.

Pennants reverted back to an early March start, and entries were very good with 92 teams entered across the

7 grades. This also may have to change next year depending on what changes Bowls Australia and Bowls

NSW have to make.

We had played 3 rounds before the stoppage and unfortunately State Pennants had to be cancelled for the year.

The State and Australian Championships are still being played, so at least bowlers had something to play in.

Kiama hosted the 61st South Pacific Carnival and did an exceptionally good job. Harry, Dave, and helpers ran

a successful carnival in my absence and Kiama showed that smaller clubs can still host this event successfully.

Figgy Bowlo will host the 61st Carnival at the end of the year and are very keen to make it a success.

Here’s hoping we get back to normal soon and never see another year like this one.

Illawarra Zone 16 Selection Sub-committee Annual Report – 2019/2020

It is fair say that the Zone representative sides have had an extraordinarily successful year.

Under 25s

The Under 25 side was the first side play in the representative season at Blacktown Workers Bowling Club

in the Inter Zone Challenge. The boys conducted themselves very well and were a credit themselves, their

Club, and the Zone.

Unfortunately, we started off losing the first two game but came home with a wet sail by winning the next

three games and finished up finishing in third place. Zone 10 won the challenge overall.

Page 8: ANNUAL REPORT YEAR ENDING 31st MAY 2020

I would like to thank President Ken Forbes for attending the day and Jim Davies for driving the bus which

was kindly donated by Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club.

The Open team that was selected to play in the State Inter Zone played against the Senior team that was

selected to play in the State Inter Zone in 2 games. It should be noted that the Open Team was without A

Teys, C Wedlock and J Mitchell for these games.

The Senior team was successful for the first time by 20 shots overall.

Overall, this was a great week of bowls for the Zone 16 Senior and Open representative teams. Both lost

their first game but turned that loss around to be crowned 2020 State Inter Zone Champions.

What a great effort from the Open team after they were beaten by Zone 13 in the first game by 17 shots to

come out and beat them in the final by 17 shots…a turnaround of 34 shots.

Finally, I would like to thank the players for both representative teams for an outstanding week and

congratulations to you all.

I would also like to thank Bob Roser for looking after the Open team and all the officials. Thanks again to

2019-2020 Annual Junior Report

2019 NSW Junior Inter-Zone 7-a-side Championship

Zone 16 topped the sectional rounds in all discipline progressing through to the playoff’s for medals. Tyson

Arneman received a silver medal in the singles, Ryan Nabbe and Daniel Davis were 4th in the pairs and Ricci-

Rose Hampton, Jacob Aitken, Charlie Jeffers and Jackson Williams received bronze in the fours, with Daniel

Hunter contributing throughout the sectional rounds as our reserve. An extraordinarily successful campaign

for Zone 16 and narrowly coming 2nd in the overall trophy to Zone 12.

2020 Junior South Pacific

Zone 16 had 12 entries in the U16 Singles and 4 entries in the U18 singles. We had Jacob Aitken and Charlie

Jeffers progress to the playoff rounds in the U16 Singles but unfortunately bowed out in the Round of 16.

Tyson Arneman, Daniel Davies, Toby Peters, and Jackson Williams all progressed to playoffs in the U18

Singles however were all drawn to play each other in the early rounds. Tyson and Jackson reached the Round

of 16, Daniel the Quarterfinals, with Toby taking out the title. In the Pairs discipline Tyson and Daniel were

knocked out in the Round of 16, Charlie and Jackson were beaten in the Quarterfinals to eventual champions

Toby and partner Connor Freeman. Congratulations Toby on both the Singles and Pairs Titles and to all our

Zone 16 juniors involved.

Metropolitan Shield

Under the new format of Pairs, Triples and Fours our Zone 16 Juniors were ready for the challenge. The Zone

16 team put out a strong performance throughout the whole day providing themselves the opportunity to regain

the shield from last year’s champions Zone 15. Overall Zone 16 were undefeated against Zone’s 5, 10, 12, 13

and 15 and reclaimed the shield back to the Illawarra. Notable mentions for the day were Luke Bailey and

Jacob Halpin making their debuts for Zone 16 while Tyson Arneman and Ryan Nabbe played their final game

for the Zone 16 Junior Team. We congratulate all involved and especially Tyson and Ryan for being such

valuable team members over the years and wish them further success on and off the green.

We are lucky to have a strong number of juniors in the Illawarra and hope that continues to grow over the

coming years.

GREENS COMMITTEE REPORT

2019 – 2020

All bowling clubs within our Zone were inspected prior to the start of the 2019 pennant season.

We would like to thank all green keepers and their helpers for their ready assistance and sound advice during

the inspections, it certainly was appreciated.

Thank you to all concerned for the efforts made to ensure that all greens were maintained to such a high

standard.

I trust that my health will prove so that I can again be part of the greens committee next year.

Bob Upton

Chairperson – Greens Committee.

TREASURERS REPORT F.Y. 2019/2020 It is with pleasure that I submit my second Treasurers report for financial year 1 June 2019 to 31

May 2020.

This year we have all experienced a period of turmoil with the dreaded Corona virus, which has

caused our member clubs to close, bowling activities to cease and delay our forecasted plans and budgets for

the upcoming year. I can now report after confirmation from our Auditor we have made a small profit of

$10,463 compared to a loss of $3,846.00 last financial year.

Having stated that, all expected income has now been received, however, there is a small amount of

expenditure outstanding. This includes, Zone 16 championships prize monies of $6,300 and umpires’ fees of

$90 totalling $6,390.

Important points of interest in this report are: -

1. The Zone has investments amounting to $119,701.76 with the Greater Bank, maturing every six months.

2. Every invoice issued to our twenty-one bowling clubs has been paid in full.

3. South Pacific Carnival almost broke square, with a small loss of $139.

4. The night fours broke exactly square.

5. Accommodation for the Juniors tournaments at Soldiers Point / Port Stephens in August 2020 has been

paid in full.

6. Pennant flags and pennant caps have been purchased and paid for in full awaiting completion of the

2020 Pennant season.

7. Rookies tournament broke exactly square.

Page 12: ANNUAL REPORT YEAR ENDING 31st MAY 2020

At the time when bowling activities ceased on or about 20 March 2020, our financial goals and

forecasts were in line with our budgets and predictions.

The Zone 16 executive has received advice and direction from Bowls Australia and Bowls New

South Wales as to a 25% reduction in affiliation fees for next financial year. This has been passed onto

every club in Illawarra Zone 16.

I can advise that Illawarra Zone 16 is in a very sound financial position going forward into the next

financial year as we all await and look forward to the recommencement of our full bowling activities.
