PRESIDENT'S REPORT

2020-2021

The year 2020 will certainly go down as one of uncertainty and challenge for the Bowling

Fraternity Australia wide, Floods, Bush Fires, Droughts and to top it all off the dreaded "Covid-19",

Bowls Australia cancelled major events which thankfully came "back online" later into the

bowling program.

Brian Gibson and his lovely wife Angela worked long hours to ensure the Zone 16 events were "Re-

Scheduled and thus completed on time.

Our Vets and Super -Vets was again an outstanding success and our thanks to

Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club for their continued support of this popular annual event for our "Oldies"

Thank you to all Zone 16 Bowling Clubs who have continued to support Zone 16 Events During the year and to our local media W.I.N. And the Illawarra Mercury for their Excellent Coverage of our bowling events.

My personal thanks to the Executive Committee who have ably supported me during the year under review.

To each Member of our various Zone 16 Committees a very sincere "Thank You" for your outstanding contribution to our Zone during the year. It is certainly a real pleasure to work with such a dedicated and loyal team of officers. Thank you one and all.

Due to the untiring events of the Unification working group and their highly informative Road.

Shows state-wide the sixteen zones in N.S.W. Voted "Yes" for the Unification of Bowls N.S.W. And

Women's Bowls N.S.W. This now means that both entities will now merge their two associations into

one new entity which will be known as: -

BOWLS NEW SOUTH WALES LIMITED

My personal thanks to Matt Goodwin, Bowls N.S.W. For his phone call during the time involved in the

unification process, this call certainly meant a lot to me and I am certainly grateful for such.

On behalf of Zone 16 congratulations to the working group for a job "well done"

Our Zone 16 Members offer their condolences to all families who have lost loved ones during the year. Our

prayers and thoughts are with you.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

2020 – 2021

This is my fifth report for Zone 16, and I firstly must congratulate and thank Zone 16 executive for their help

in allowing me to fulfil the position as secretary. As most would know I have been involved in bowls for a

Page 7: ANNUAL REPORT YEAR ENDING 31st MAY. 2021

few years and held a few positions. The position of Secretary can be demanding and fulfilling. With electronic

media things become quicker and maybe a bit simpler but also with that comes quantity.

I have put my hand up for another year as I have enjoyed working for the bowlers of the Zone.

As noted last year the Zone is in a strong position both administratively and financially disregarding the onset

of the covid -19 pandemic.

I had the pleasure of working with some very capable and keen members of the Executive who all give

generously with their time.

To Brian and Angela Gibson and the match committee thanks for a great job in handling all the pennants and

championships unfortunately the 63rd South Pacific Carnival was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The covid-19 pandemic play havoc with bowls events during 2020 leading to the cancellation of many Zone

& BNSW events ensuring that 2021 will be a remarkably busy year for bowls.

Congratulations to all our Zone pennant winners.

Congratulations to Aaron Teys & Corey Wedlock from the Warilla Bowling club for their inclusion into the

Australian representative side, Daniel & Zoe Davies from the Windang Bowling Club and Ricci-Rose

Hampton from the Dapto Citizen Bowling Club who have been selected to trial in the upcoming State Junior

Selection Series.

Once again, we found it disappointing in the numbers that came to Management Meetings and the lack of

input from clubs and delegates. We now hold quarterly meetings in the hope of getting more to attend.

A major problem is still communication, the Zone submits correspondence to clubs and club delegates, but it

appears that this does not get passed onto the club members. We require all parties that receive Zone

correspondence to ensure that their members have access to said correspondence.

Thanks for having me and do your best to promote our game.

MATCH COMMITTEE REPORT FOR 2020/2021

On behalf of the Match Committee, I would like to thank all the Bowls Coordinators/Secretaries for their

assistance this year, also the Clubs that assisted us by letting us use their greens. Thank you to all the clubs

that sponsored Zone events and allowed us to pay exceptionally good prize money. Entries were particularly

good for all events and near the top for the whole of the state in most events.

Green keepers deserve a mention too, as the greens were in good condition. We try and keep a good

relationship with them as they are often under-appreciated in my opinion.

I would also like to thank my Match Committee for their assistance during the year.

Once again, zone numbers remained steady at about 2670.

The Australian and State programs were realigned to flow better and up, until the latest Covid shutdown we

were on track to finish all events. It does look like some changes will have to be made for the rest of 2021 and

a couple of events at State level, may have to be cancelled.

Page 8: ANNUAL REPORT YEAR ENDING 31st MAY. 2021

Pennants started in March and except for a couple of wet weekends, we finished on time. Entries were

particularly good with 86 teams entered across the 7 grades. Pennant grand finals weekends were probably

the best, with great weather and big crowds in attendance. Our playoff system is being copied by a lot of zones

around the state.

The State and Australian Championships from 2020 were played early in the year and Warilla players enjoyed

great success. The 2021 events hopefully will be played later this year. Hopefully, Zone 16 bowlers will do

well again this year.

Unfortunately, the South Pacific had to be cancelled for the first time in 62 years, due to the Covid restrictions,

but hopefully we will be back at Figtree Sports this year to continue the tradition with some slight changes.

Unification is now happening, so the next few months will be interesting to see which events etc will be

played. Surveys will be sent out very soon to ask clubs and players their thoughts.

Thanks to Mike Driscoll for his efforts to help publicise our sport.

On a slightly sour note, the Covid restrictions put on bowls by the Health Dept were much more severe than

other sports and a lot of bowlers blamed BNSW for these decisions, which was not true. I lost count of the

number of complaints I received from players who had their facts wrong.

SELECTORS REPORT

Well, this year was an up and down year mainly with Covid.

First, the Development Squad plus an over 60s squad was selected to play Zone 7 at Huskisson and we were slow to get

out of the blocks in the morning but in the afternoon, we came out firing after going down in the morning .

We then picked 4 rinks of Seniors and 4 rinks of Opens to play Zone 5 at Picton .We were successful in the morning as

well as the afternoon winning both games. We then picked 13 players of open and Seniors to play at Tamworth in the State

Interzone Events .

The results are as follows the seniors won their Section and then they won the Quarter Final, the semifinal but were defeated

in the final by Zone 14 but I must say that all the players conducted themselves very well and were a credit to themselves

,their clubs as well as the Zone. Getting the Silver Medal was just awesome.

The Senior team then won their Section and they had to play Zone 12 in the Quarter Final and after many ends that were

killed, we were successful then and we had to play Zone 13 in the Semi Final and it went down to the last bowl, and we

were on the winning side of the board. We then had to play Zone 2 and unfortunately, we were defeated by an exceptionally

good team on the day.

Like the senior team the Open team was a credit to themselves their clubs and the Zone. In finishing I would like to thank

my fellow selectors Jim Davis, John Delahunty and Tom Canvin unfortunately Tom had to resign owing to health

problems.

I would like to thank the players who represented the Zone during the year well played well done.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Bob Roser and his wife Barbara for their assistants during the week at

Tamworth .

Yours in bowls

Terry Seton (Chairman of Selectors)

UMPIRES REPORT 2020/21

Once again, we have gone into lock down with covid and this has put us back to a position where we must

set new dates for the people we had arranged to have tested.

Bowls Australia has granted a one-year extension so if you were due in 2020 you have till 2021 to be

reaccredited, we will have everybody passed by then.

Thank you to the clubs where we hold our meetings and on green exams and to al umpires thank for your

support in these hard times.

2020-21 ANNUAL JUNIOR REPORT.

Junior bowls this year unfortunately hampered by Covid19 limitations. The events that were able to be played

this year were all played in good spirits and sportsmanship. All juniors played well considering limited time

on the greens.

A congratulations to Daniel Davies, Zoe Davies, and Ricci Rose Hampton on selection to NSW under 18

training squads.

We didn’t bring home the gold in the events played this year, But the effort showed by the juniors was

encouraging. A few things were noticed during competition that we may need to look at regarding

training/coaching in the future.

A big thank you to all that helped throughout the year with our juniors, including other zone 16 officials,

volunteers, family members and supporters.

Let’s all hope for a better season without the disruptions once this Covid19 situation settles down.

Thanks for the help throughout the year from Natalie Noronha (coach). Doing a great job.

Look forward to meeting, greeting, and encouraging any new juniors within the near future, let’s hope all our

current juniors continue to play this great game.

Financial report for year ending 31 May 2021.

This is my third year as Zone 16 Treasurer, and it is with great pleasure that I advise the following financial

status of Zone 16 Bowls Association Inc. for year ending 31 May 2021.

Zone 16 showed a small profit of $1,606.91 for the 12-month period from 1 June 2020 to 31 May 2021.

Having stated this, several tournaments and activities were not conducted throughout the year.

Just to mention some are: - South Pacific Carnival, Night Fours, Rookie’s tournaments, and a reduction in

many tournament entries with limitations placed on our 21 Illawarra bowling clubs due to Covid 19

restrictions.

Pennant accommodation assistance grants were zero, Pennant entry fees were reduced by 50%, and club

Affiliation fees were dramatically reduced by 25%. Junior expenses increased by $5,293.

Over many previous years the zone has accumulated investments with the Greater Bank in the amount of

$120,844, showing a small interest increase of $2260 over last year.

All in all, Zone 16 stands in a particularly solid financial position going forward into 2021 / 2022.

A special thank you to all bowling clubs’ financial staff for their prompt payments as and when requested.
