2. THE THOR HEYERDAHL INSTITUTE - IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THOR HEYERDAHL

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute (www.heyerdahl-institute.no) is a foundation, established by Vestfold County Council and located in Larvik. The main objective of the Institute is to consolidate and develop Thor Heyerdahl’s ideas and values within interdisciplinary research, international dialogue / multi-cultural collaboration and protection of the global environment. The Institute is supported financially by Vestfold County Council and Larvik Municipality. It has also received direct funding from the Norwegian Government since 2006.

The work of The Thor Heyerdahl Institute includes the organisation of international conferences, the development of study programmes in co-operation with universities in Norway and abroad, and the dissemination of knowledge to children and young people. The Institute has a broad range of contacts within public administration, private business and scientific institutions.

With limited financial resources the Institute has made a mark for itself on an international, national and local level within its area of activity and purpose.

The concept of a Heyerdahl Institute was presented to Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) in 1999 and he wrote the following message to the Institute: “A great deal has happened since our dialogue started, and it goes without saying that I am honoured by the fact that the new institute has chosen to bear my name and has adopted objectives so akin to the above precept. The principal objective of the Heyerdahl Institute is to help build bridges between my native country and the world community. I am naturally glad that its headquarters are located in the very place where I was lucky to be born – where my parents chose to let their only child grow up. They settled in Larvik to start Vestfold Bryggeri (brewery), with the happy outcome that their son grew up in a setting where nature and history had combined to produce some giants of creative endeavour in the past.”

“I have neither the desire nor the right to set working rules and plans for The Heyerdahl Institute, merely because it bears my name. But there must be a reason why the founders decided to acknowledge my life’s work in this way. I hope and believe that the basic reason is common belief in the unity of mankind. To achieve such unity, there is an urgent need for building bridges across ethnic diversity, national borders and political and religious factions.”

“Any scientist, thinker and wise person with a global vision, who seeks to contribute towards disentangling this explosive situation, should be encouraged to speak out. Indeed, the new institute represents another forum for expressing such views.”

“What about the religious leaders who stir up murderous hatred between Jews and Muslims in the Middle East? Between Muslims and Christians in Pakistan and Europe, or between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland? Is it so difficult to teach the congregations in the synagogues, the churches and the mosques that ‘the God of love and creation’ they all worship is the God of Abraham? Is it too difficult to say that Christians and Muslims alike in the Old Testament of the Jews accepted these moral laws, which they all claim God gave to Moses as the Ten Commandments? Who has the right to tell us to kill, and still claim to be faithful servants of any of these?”

“As a new forum for international exchange and debate about such critical issues, I wish the Heyerdahl Institute every success and many years of creative work for the benefit of mankind globally. I applaud your interdisciplinary working philosophy, and endorse your emphasis on cross-cultural understanding, reciprocity and mutual respect.” (Source: Thor Heyerdahl, Tenerife, 10.9.2001).

Thor Heyerdahl’s archives became part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage in 2011 and the Kon-Tiki Museum took responsibility for the work involved. Inclusion in UNESCO’s Memory of the World list

means that Heyerdahl’s expeditions are considered to be important cultural heritage in a global context. This says a lot about the global status of Thor Heyerdahl, the man from Larvik and Vestfold, one of the most famous Norwegians abroad.

2.1 Summary of results achieved, strategies and plans (2002-2015)

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute has accumulated a project portfolio of multi-disciplinary projects since 2002. It has gained experience from joint activities with Norwegian and foreign universities, public administration, sixth form colleges and other organisations in Norway and abroad. The Institute has initiated and carried out a series of local, regional, national and international projects.

Several of the initiatives implemented or planned by the Institute can be considered entrepreneurial in a national context. These include unique measures such as The Thor Heyerdahl International Day conference on a global theme, an interdisciplinary environment-oriented Thor Heyerdahl professorship set up in co-operation with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), as well as The Thor Heyerdahl International Summer School for young researchers.

The Thor Heyerdahl professorship in co-operation with NMBU tried to maintain a thematic and methodological focus. Thematically, the professorship concentrated on the field of Environmental Governance, with particular emphasis on the relationship between development and the environment. Methodically, the focus was on maintaining a multi-disciplinary approach. The professorship aimed to continue to develop expertise in relation to collaboration between social/political processes in naturally given systems. Within this framework there was an emphasis on how

conditions can be created in order to change behaviour in a more environmentally-friendly direction.

In co-operation with NMBU, the Fridtjof Nansen Institute and the Research Council of Norway, the Institute has organised The Thor Heyerdahl International Summer School in 2011, 2012 and 2014. So far, PhD students and young researchers from more than 30 countries have participated. The aim of this initiative is to bring together young and more experienced researchers from all over the world, at the same time as developing the participants’ skills in analysing environmental-political issues. The participants’ evaluation of the summer school has been very good.

The Thor Heyerdahl International Day is an international conference held in honour of Thor Heyerdahl and, like Heyerdahl, it focuses on a global issue. The conference has been organised eight times and the Institute has worked continuously from 2006 until 2014 to recruit well-known inter- national speakers to the event. So far, two Nobel Prize winners have spoken at the conference. In 2010, Nobel Prize winner in economics, Professor Elinor Ostrom (USA), gave a lecture on ‘A poly- centric approach to climate change. Climate Politics – Do we have to wait for the UN?’

In 2014, at the 100th anniversary conference, the international guest lecturer was Professor Munasinghe, former vice chairman of the UN Climate Panel (IPCC) and winner of the Nobel Prize with Al Gore in 2007. The theme for his lecture was Sustainable Development.

In partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) in Scotland, the Institute has offered two Master’s degree programmes to students from all over the world. According to GCU, these programmes are unique both in a European context

and within Heritage and Tourism as an academic discipline. Norwegian students have been eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Institute to attend these courses: MSc Cultural Heritage Studies (2005-2008) and MSc International Tourism Management (from 2011). The scholarship scheme was facilitated by the approval of an application for funding submitted to Telemark and Vestfold County Council.

The Institute has been a co-operative partner and financial contributor to two expeditions: the Tangaroa Expedition (a copy of the Kon-Tiki Expedition) in 2006 and the Norwegian sailing trip with the Kon-Tiki in 2012 (intended as inspiration for children and youth in connection with the launching of the Kon-Tiki film in 2012). The effect of the Kon-Tiki film, Norway’s most seen film in 2012, has resulted in a noticeable increase in interest for Thor Heyerdahl’s values and the Institute that is working in his wake.

2014 marked the 100th anniversary of Thor Heyerdahl’s birth. The Institute organised a series of events in co-operation with foreign universities; Glasgow Caledonian University (Scotland), University Campus Suffolk (England) and Pacific Lutheran University (USA). Other events were organised in co-operation with the Municipality of Andora (Thor Heyerdahl’s home town in Italy), the Kon-Tiki Museum, Vestfold County Council and Larvik Municipality.

Parallel to the results achieved so far, there has been a focus on the organisational development of the Institute. An annual strategy discussion was on the agenda for the centenary year of 2014 and took the form of a foresight seminar organised by the Board of Directors. The main aim of the seminar, which was a follow-up of a similar seminar held in 2010, was to have an open discussion about the future of the Institute.

Since 2002, the Heyerdahl family members have actively supported the work of the Institute through their participation in various initiatives. The need to co-ordinate activities in relation to the Kon-Tiki Museum was taken care of from 2002-2010 by the fact that the museum director was represented on the Board of the Institute. From 2011-2013 the museum’s former head of research was a Board member, while in the centenary year of 2014, the Institute and museum have collaborated on a range of initiatives.

2.2. The work of the Board

The Institute is a non-profit foundation for the common good and its board members are appointed by Vestfold County Council and the Institute’s own Board. All grants and any surplus funding must be invested in the organisation. There is no distribution of dividends.

The board members represent a resourceful national team with extensive national/international networks and expertise. They work on a voluntary basis and strengthen the Institute’s profile and potential for further development.

The Board of Directors met four times in 2014 and used the accounting reports to follow the financial situation closely. The Board works continuously to maintain and increase the level of sponsorship and operating funds granted to the Institute on a local, regional and national level. Emphasis is placed on consolidating and developing the multi-disciplinary profile of the Institute.

3. CONSOLIDATION OF THOR HEYERDAHL’S HERITAGE

The consolidation of Thor Heyerdahl’s cultural heritage under the direction of the Institute takes place in the form of interdisciplinary research, international dialogue and protection of the global environment.

One of the main aims of the Institute’s academic activities is to develop a methodology for multi-disciplinary research and to satisfy scientific require-ments within such an approach. The Institute has focussed on establishing and developing its multi-disciplinary profile since 2002. This is demonstrated in particular by the four-year Thor Heyerdahl profes-sorship (2008-2012) and The Thor Heyerdahl Inter-national Summer School for young researchers from all over the world (2011, 2012 and 2014).

Thor Heyerdahl’s archives became part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage in 2011 and the Kon-Tiki Museum took responsibility for the work involved. Inclusion in UNESCO’s Memory of the World list means that Heyerdahl’s expeditions are considered to be important cultural heritage in a

global context. This says a lot about the global status of Thor Heyerdahl, the man from Larvik and Vestfold, one of the most famous Norwegians abroad.

Outside Norway, Thor Heyerdahl is one of our most famous, admired and respected men. At the same time, he is undoubtedly controversial, particularly in scientific circles. The Institute experienced this in connection with the establishment of a Thor Heyerdahl professorship. It took two years and discussions with three universities before the decision was made in favour of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU).

“Thor Heyerdahl worked tirelessly to find the answer to a number of historical mysteries. His merits are numerous; he persuaded people to join him on the most hazardous projects and he achieved the goals he set himself, regardless of their Utopian appearance to others”. (Kock Johansen, 2003)

“Thor Heyerdahl is the world’s most famous Norwegian. The Kon-Tiki Expedition gave Heyerdahl instant fame, but his expeditions also led him along a difficult path. While the general public cheered him on for his daring, the scientific community grumbled”. (Kvam Jr. 2006)

“Thor Heyerdahl was an experimental archaeologist, author and adventurer. Heyerdahl was awarded several honorary doctorates and other prizes, but few of his scientific theories won much acceptance in academic circles. Scientists have accused him on several occasions of selective use of sources and unscientific methods”. (Wikipedia, 2003)

The work of consolidating the heritage of world citizen Thor Heyerdahl has resulted in a series of projects that have been carried out in line with the objectives of The Thor Heyerdahl Institute.

4. 1. A four-year Thor Heyerdahl professorship in co-operation with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU)

SUMMARYThe Thor Heyerdahl professorship (2008-2012) was a four-year co-operative agreement with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The financial obligations associated with the appointment were divided equally between the two institutions.

The main area of activity for the Thor Heyerdahl professorship comprised research and research supervision.

THEMEFour main thematic areas within environmental governance were defined for the professorship:

a) Climate politics. Empirical and theoretical research directed towards initiatives and measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

b) Institutions and behaviour. Use of research projects to direct focus towards what motivates people to adopt an environmentally friendly mode of behaviour and how institutional changes can create a framework for increased environmental involvement.

c) Health and development. The plan was to increase the focus on political and cultural aspects of health and development. One concrete measure was the appointment of a postdoctoral candidate to undertake a research project within water and sanitary policy.

d) Environmental governance. All the areas of research mentioned in points a)-d) are inter-disciplinary. It was a specific aim to exploit the

experience gained from this type of research in order to develop models and syntheses for the general implementation of interdisciplinary research.

e) Development of interdisciplinary theory and methodology.

ACTIVITIESIn 2014 Professor Arild Vatn made a compilation of all his publications from four years as Thor Heyerdahl professor. The material was registered and archived in the Institute’s archive and at Larvik Public Library (Heyerdahl Room).

Professor Vatn also planned and organised The Thor Heyerdahl International Summer School in Environmental Governance (THSS) 2014. This was the third summer school to be held under the direction of the Thor Heyerdahl professorship.

4.2. The Thor Heyerdahl International Summer School in Environmental Governance

SUMMARYThe Thor Heyerdahl International Summer School (THSS) is an initiative established under the direction of the Thor Heyerdahl professorship and organised at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). The aim is to develop the participants’ skills in the analysis of environmental-political questions. The target group has been young resear-chers and PhD students from all over the world and the initiative has continued after the end of the professorship. In 2011, 2012 and 2014 a total of 75 young researchers and PhD students from more than 30 countries have taken part in the summer school.

2014 was the third summer school in the series and

Page 11: ANNUAL REPORT2014 - heyerdahl-institute.no · Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary (1914-2014) 14 4.7. Film: The Fight for the Nile 15 5. The Institute’s book collection in the

focused on ‘The Green Economy’. There were a total of 24 participants – PhD students and young researchers – from 20 countries. All continents were represented with the exception of Australia. The summer school was organised by a course committee at Noragric/NMBU and involved a total of 13 internationally recognised lecturers, several of whom Professor Vatn describes as being at the forefront of their fields. Vatn said that it was very easy to recruit good lecturers – a sign he feels shows that the summer school has achieved a certain international reputation.

The summer school included several different elements; lectures, seminars, group work and a group task with supervision. All participants received a certificate based on their attendance and the quality of the paper they submitted. They received 10 study points for the summer school – in a system where a full year’s work is normally worth 60 study points.

The winner of the Nobel Prize in economics 2009, Professor Elinor Ostrom from Indiana University, USA (www.wikipedia), opened the summer school in 2011. The summer school has received financial support from the Research Council of Norway, NMBU, The Fridtjof Nansen Institute and The Thor Heyerdahl Institute. According to Vatn, THSS has been an important and extremely successful summer school both during and after the profes-sorship. Evaluations carried out in 2014 and in previous years show that the summer school has been a success. Feedback has been excellent.

THEMEAccording to Professor Vatn, the participants at The Thor Heyerdahl International Summer School in Environmental Governance have gained a better insight into the processes that create environmental problems as well as the strengths and weaknesses of different strategies to solve them.

Another important aim of the summer school has been network-building and the provision of a meeting place for teaching personnel, doctoral students and researchers, in particular from Africa and Europe.

The summer school courses have had the following themes: 2011 - Institutions and Sustainable Development2012 - Global Environmental Governance2014 - The Green Economy

The summer school’s social programme included a presentation of The Thor Heyerdahl Institute by the managing director and a talk about Thor Heyerdahl by Thor Heyerdahl Jr. There was also a guided tour, light refreshments and a visit to the Kon-Tiki Museum. This programme was carried out at all three summer schools and was greatly appreciated by the students.

ACTIVITIESIn 2014 Professor Arild Vatn planned to write a report about the activities of The Thor Heyerdahl International Summer School.

According to Vatn: “The 2014 summer school focused on ‘The Green Economy’ and was the third in the series. We were again successfully able to recruit top international lecturers and the partici-pants’ evaluations have been excellent.”

The concept Green Economy appeared on the inter-national agenda in the wake of the financial crisis in 2008. Green investments and green growth were highlighted as a possible new path for economic development – cf. initiative from the UN/UNEP, World Bank and OECD. Other researchers have pointed out that green economy should be less about growth and more about adapting to nature’s limitations. The summer school was designed to give participants an insight into the various different standpoints and support them in their own research regarding how to improve the handling of environ-

mental challenges in the future. The academic field of Green Economy requires an interdisciplinary approach across both the natural and social sciences as well as across the different social sciences. The summer school incorporated this need into its lectures, group work and the compulsory group papers.

4.3. The Institute has organised The Thor Heyerdahl International Day on eight occasions (in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014), with international guest lecturers speaking on a contemporary global issue

THEME2014 was Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary (1914-2014). The conference was organised in co-operation with Larvik Municipality and included an anniversary concert with Vestfold Symphony Orchestra and opera singers from Italy and Norway.

The aim of The Thor Heyerdahl International Day is to pay tribute to Thor Heyerdahl’s life and work, and main his values by setting global challenges on the agenda. At the same time, the conference increases the visibility of the Institute in the national arena as a forum for international dialogue.

This international conference has previously been organised in co-operation with NTNU and NMBU in Norway, Pacific Lutheran University in the USA, as well as Larvik Municipality and other organisations in Norway whose work is related to the topic of the conference.

ACTIVITIESThe Thor Heyerdahl International Day 2014 was an anniversary conference to commemorate Thor Heyerdahl’s centenary. A number of speakers were invited to participate.

In addition to the main lecturer, Professor Mohan Munasinghe, there were several other speakers. Thorild Widvey (Minister of Culture) opened the conference with a speech about Thor Heyerdahl and Norway. Professor Terje Tvedt from the universities of Bergen and Oslo gave a lecture and showed the film: ‘Water and the development of human civili-sation, some perspectives’. This built on Tvedt’s lecture from The Thor Heyerdahl International Day 2012 and the conference held in co-operation with Pacific Lutheran University (PLU), ‘Our Thirsty Planet’. The theme was water and global environ-mental challenges.

Dr. philos. Øystein Kock Johansen gave a lecture on ‘The man, researcher and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl’, while Thor Heyerdahl Jr. contributed with a greeting from the Heyerdahl family.

4.4. From 2011/2012: Interdisciplinary Master’s degree in Cultural Heritage and Tourism

SUMMARYThe MSc in International Tourism Management follows up and continues along the lines of the first Master’s degree offered by the partnership between Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and The Thor Heyerdahl Institute. The previous Master’s degree, MSc Cultural Studies, was taught at GCU from 2006-2008. Students from all over the world took the degree course and scholarships were granted by Telemark County Council to all Norwegian students in 2005-2008. Funding for the scholarship scheme offered by Telemark and Vestfold County Council to students taking the Master’s degree was granted on the basis of an application from the Institute.

THEMEThe system of partnerships in Great Britain between the public and private sector, often linked to R&D, represents an alternative way of developing arenas and marketing tourism and cultural heritage destina-tions.

National cultural heritage and tourism policy in Norway has been in a process of re-structuring for several years. In this context the partnerships’ Master’s degree programmes have been met with curiosity and have received positive feedback from the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO), Innovation Norway, the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, and others.

The MSc in International Tourism Management is an interdisciplinary Master’s degree offered as a full-time, part-time or online programme to students from all over the world. The Institute has previously applied for and received approval for a scholarship scheme from Vestfold County Council to be used in the recruitment of Norwegian students. Norwegian students have applied to the programme and two scholarships have been awarded from Vestfold County Council. Recruitment campaigns and promotion of the programme were initiated in 2013 and continued in 2014. The Master’s degree emphasises an extensive exchange of expertise

across country borders. So far it has proven relatively difficult to recruit Norwegian students to the MSc in International Tourism Management.

ACTIVITIESIn 2014 efforts were made to promote the Master’s degree through a variety of educational channels. There were no applicants and the recruitment campaign continues.

The Institute is not aware of any equivalent Master’s degree programme in Norway. Feedback from the Norwegian students who completed the previous Master’s degree offered by the partnership has been positive.

4. 5. Local and regional initiatives

SUMMARYSince its establishment the Institute has worked closely with Vestfold County Council and Larvik Municipality. One of the Institute’s prioritised activities is to be a national/international represen-tative for development in a local and regional context. Vestfold County Council founded the Institute and is an advisory partner in relation to framework agreements and strategies. Larvik Municipality and the Institute co-operate on a number of initiatives every year.

In 2014 Larvik Municipality established an anniversary committee. The Institute has been a close collaborative partner in the committee’s steering group, which has consisted of various representatives from the Larvik area. A large number of school initiatives were organised in 2014, ranging from kindergarten to middle school level. Larvik Public Library has also co-operated with the Institute on a series of lectures that were held during the centenary year.

THEMEFrom 2008-2010, Larvik Municipality implemented a local ’Heyerdahl Town’ project. The aim was to make Larvik visible as the birthplace of Thor Heyerdahl. Funding for the project was provided by

contributions from Larvik Municipality and Vestfold County Council. The local project incorporated a previously approved local action plan for the Institute. Most of the aims outlined in the project plan have been realised. The Institute was an active contributor in the municipal steering committee for the project and has had responsibility for the conti-nuation of some of the activities after the end of the project period. This was also the case in 2014.

ACTIVITIESA framework agreement has been established between Vestfold County Council and the Institute. This agreement covers relevant areas of focus for the region, including sixth form colleges, interna-tional initiatives, regional development and co-operation with the University College of Vestfold/Telemark.

A main objective for the Institute has for many years been the establishment of a Heyerdahl Centre in Larvik. The Institute has prepared a design concept for a future national/international Heyerdahl Centre in Larvik, linked to R&D, conferences/seminars, exhibitions/experience and activities for children and youth. This concept has been presented to the Board of Larvik Municipality and the next stage is a pilot project in close co-operation with Larvik Municipality in relation to municipal plans for the inner harbour area. A future Heyerdahl Centre would include offices for the Institute. The Institute does not currently have its own premises and is located in Larvik’s municipal administration building.

4.6. Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary (1914-2014)

BACKGROUNDThor Heyerdahl became world famous when he and his crew carried out the Kon-Tiki Expedition in 1947. His life, research, expeditions, and not least his passion for the global environment and peace, have made Thor Heyerdahl one of the world’s most famous Norwegians through the ages. The celebration of Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary should inspire, provide knowledge and increase the visibility of Heyerdahl’s life and work.

THEMEThe events outside Norway took place at partner universities in Scotland, England and USA, as well as in Andora, Thor Heyerdahl’s home town in Italy. Several activities in Norway were organised in colla-boration with the Kon-Tiki Museum, while local and regional initiatives were carried out in co-operation with Larvik Municipality and Vestfold County Council.

ACTIVITIES - THOR HEYERDAHL’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY 2014The following events were organised to mark Thor Heyerdahl’s 100 year anniversary. Attendance was good and the events were partially financed by sponsors.

4.7. Film. The Fight for the Nile

The documentary series consists of three parts, each lasting 52 minutes. Episode 1: ‘Created by the Nile’, Episode 2: ‘Source in the Heart of Africa’, Episode 3: ‘The Fight for the Blue Nile’. The film is based on a manuscript by Professor Terje Tvedt (UiO/UiB). According to the project description “the film will look for and find the answer to whether it is possible to solve this conflict before it is too late. The fight for the Nile has recently changed drasti-cally, a fact that can have global consequences”.

THEMEAccording to the project description, ‘The Fight for the Nile’ is a documentary series in three parts that focuses on the conflict relating to the distribution of water resources in the Nile Delta. Leaders of state and populations in ten countries are currently engaged in a power struggle against time about how the water in the world’s most legendary river should be used and divided.

ACTIVITIESThe documentary film series was shown on the Norwegian television channel NRK 1 in the autumn 2014 and was seen by many Norwegians. It was of high quality and was reviewed in several national media. Film is an effective means of communication and the Institute will receive a web and DVD version of the series for free usage. It will also receive other material for use at own events and for marketing purposes. This type of initiative is being incorpo-rated into the development of a new marketing strategy (2012-2015) and will be used to attract potential sponsors.

Panopticon has said that a cinema and festival version of the film is being planned.

• Thor Heyerdahl anniversary book. Book launch and presentation 6 October. The anniversary book ’Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki in a New Light’ represents a special focus with respect to Thor Heyerdahl’s cultural heritage and 100th anniversary. The Institute initiated and funded the book, in which internationally recognised researchers from different disciplines discuss the theories underlying the Kon-Tiki Expedition. Thor Heyerdahl’s theories challenged science, and the authors of the book have taken up that challenge. A broad interdisciplinary group of internationally recognised researchers discuss the ideas behind Kon-Tiki in the light of modern knowledge. The book was produced in co-operation with the Kon-Tiki Museum and published in 2014 as The Kon-Tiki Museum, Occasional Papers, Volume 14.

5. THE INSTITUTE’S BOOK COLLECTION IN THE HEYERDAHL ROOM AT LARVIK PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Heyerdahl Room at Larvik Public Library was opened in 2009 in collaboration with the local Heyerdahl Town project and Larvik Public Library. The room is extremely well visited by kindergarten groups, schools and other interested parties. In 2014 the Institute contributed additional books and other items to the room. The room contains the Institute’s and Library’s collections of Thor Heyerdahl books, videos and DVDs.

The Institute and Larvik Public Library have worked together since 2000 to build up a Heyerdahl book collection. The collection currently comprises appro-ximately 600 books that can all be borrowed. The book collection is growing continuously and purchases to the collection are made every year. The collection reflects the development of the Institute from 2000 until today, 2014. It includes, for example, 40-50 different editions of the book about the Kon-Tiki expedition, in 20 different languages.

Books are purchased in co-operation with Larvik Public Library on the basis of two types of collection:• A basic collection covering the academic areas

corresponding to or bordering on the Institute’s areas of specialisation.

• A collection by and about Thor Heyerdahl as seen in the context of the library’s own local collection. The library has a good local collection that, in addition to books, includes a unique selection of

newspaper articles spanning several decades. The local collection is consolidated on a continuous basis and is a valuable resource for the Institute.

The purchase of books for the Institute’s Heyerdahl book collection takes place in co-operation with a part-time employee linked to the Institute. This employee looks actively for books outside the usual channels. Flea markets, second-hand shops and antique shops in Norway are searched in the hunt for the best possible range, price and selection to add to the Institute’s collection.

Academic books that can be linked to the Institute’s areas of focus are purchased in co-operation with Larvik Library.

In 2014 the Institute continued to supplement the collection of books in Thor Heyerdahl’s childhood home. These books are kept on the bookshelves and are available for visitors to browse.

Larvik kindergartens, the Thor Heyerdahl Sixth Form College (videregående skole) and the frigate, KNM Thor Heyerdahl, have all previously received Heyerdahl books as a gift from the Institute.

A dialogue regarding the long-term future location of the Institute’s collection will become relevant when the Institute has permanent premises.

6. FUTURE AREAS OF FOCUS (2014–2018)

• Work continuously to maintain and increase the level of operating funds and sponsorship in order to achieve a higher level of staffing, enable the development of more projects and establish its own permanent.

• In 2014 The Thor Heyerdahl Institute received a gift from the Norwegian Government to celebrate Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary. Three scholarships within interdisciplinary research, international dialogue and protection of the global environment will be announced and awarded in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The target group comprises Norwegian sixth form colleges that offer students a specialist option in research (forskerlinje).

• Be a partner in the development of a national and international Heyerdahl Centre of expertise in Larvik.

• Organise The Thor Heyerdahl International Day conference on a global theme, either in Norway or abroad.

• Be an active value creator in the development of Larvik Municipality and the Vestfold Region.

• Establish a Heyerdahl Medal / Heyerdahl Prize / Heyerdahl Scholarship.

From 2002-2014 the Institute has achieved a high level of fulfilment in relation to its defined strategies. On the basis of the work carried out during this period, the Institute aims to extend its level of ambition and achieve the following results in the future:

Page 18: ANNUAL REPORT2014 - heyerdahl-institute.no · Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary (1914-2014) 14 4.7. Film: The Fight for the Nile 15 5. The Institute’s book collection in the

7. FINANCIAL SITUATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTE

Operating funds for The Thor Heyerdahl Institute are based on grant applications approved by Larvik Municipality and Vestfold County Council, in addition to financing via the Norwegian State Budget. It is an ongoing task to maintain funding levels, send applications and increase the level of operating funds and sponsorship.

The financial situation of the Institute was strengt-hened considerably in 2011 by the approval of its application to use previously restricted trust funds from Larvik Municipality and Vestfold County Council, a total of NOK 4 million. Financing of the Institute consists of grants towards operating costs and non-restricted trust funds.

Vestfold County Council has approved an annual NOK 500 000 grant towards operating costs for the financial planning period 2013-2016.

Larvik Municipality has approved an application for operating funds for the period 2014-2016. No operating funds were granted in 2012 out of consi-deration for the weak financial situation of Larvik Municipality. A grant towards operating funds was prioritised again from 2013, but reduced from NOK 500 000 to NOK 250 000. This is a considerable decrease compared to previous years, but at the same time it shows that Larvik Municipality priori-tises the Institute despite its weak financial situation.

Since 2013 the Institute has had a lower operating budget than in previous years. A market economist was employed on a 50% three-year contract (2012-2015) in the autumn 2012. This position has been financed through the Institute’s own limited means. Tasks include seeking sponsorship for a variety of measures, managing marketing activities, as well as co-ordinating activities in preparation for The Thor

Heyerdahl International Day conference. The feedback received so far from the private sector is that the work of the Institute is seen as the responsi-bility of the public sector and that sponsorship will not be prioritised. Many companies also say that their sponsorship strategies are based on funding activities for children, youth and sport.

The financial result for 2014 is negative. There are several reasons for this. The level of operating funds has decreased by NOK 250 000 compared to previous years. It had also been decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Thor Heyerdahl in 2014. A number of events were arranged at our partner universities in England, Scotland and USA, while in Norway anniversary initiatives directed at children from kindergarten to high school age were organised in collaboration with the Kon-Tiki Museum, Vestfold County Council and Larvik Municipality. It was important to make the anniversary visible, while at the same time securing the continuation of various ongoing projects. The anniversary activities were financed using saved funds.

A closer co-operation with the founder of the Institute, Vestfold County Council, started from 2013. This has taken the form of a framework agreement between the Institute and Vestfold County Council for the period 2013-2016, giving the Institute a closer connection and better balance regarding the relationship between expectations and financial contributions. It would be desirable to reach a similar framework agreement with Larvik Municipality in the longer term. This would secure the predictability that the Institute needs on the background of results achieved. It would also make long-term planning easier.

7. FINANCIAL SITUATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTE

The Institute has achieved a lot since it was founded 12 years ago (2002) and it has generally managed to implement its ratified plans and projects. Parallel to the results achieved so far, continuous efforts have been made since 2002 to develop the organisation and profile of the Institute. A large proportion of its defined strategic goals have been fulfilled and it can demonstrate a series of concrete results for the period 2002-2014.

An annual strategy seminar has been held (2002-2014) in conjunction with a Board meeting, and the most recent organisational development (foresight) seminar took place in 2014 with an external seminar leader. In the seminar documentation, summary and report recommendations by an external consultant, we can read the following:

“Since 2010 the Institute has experienced an inter-esting development, with increasing interest for the heritage of Thor Heyerdahl, both at home and in various international circles. At the same time, the available resources are limited. We interpret the situation such that the Institute has ambitions that are difficult to realise given the current framework conditions”.

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute and the Kon-Tiki MuseumThere are currently two institutions working with Thor Heyerdahl in Norway; the Kon-Tiki Museum and The Thor Heyerdahl Institute. They are both foundations, but have different portfolios, organisa-tional structures, working practices and content. The Kon-Tiki Museum is a private foundation, while the Institute is a publicly funded foundation for the common good. It is a non-profit organisation and there is no opportunity to distribute dividends. The Thor Heyerdahl Institute works internationally and nationally in close co-operation with Larvik Municipality and Vestfold County Council.

The Kon-Tiki Museum has been represented on the Board of the Institute since 2002. The museum director was a board member from 2002-2010, while the museum’s former head of research was on the Board from 2010-2013.

The administration and Board of The Thor Heyerdahl Institute have previously invited the administration and Board of the Kon-Tiki Museum

to a joint seminar and meetings. The seminar included a presentation of the Thor Heyerdahl professorship, an overview of the results and status of the two different foundations, as well as strategies and achievements. The agenda was as follows:• Is there a need for a joint organisation focussing on Thor Heyerdahl in Norway?• In what way can the Kon-Tiki Museum and The Thor Heyerdahl Institute continue to boost the interest in Heyerdahl in Norway in the future?• Which concrete future ideas/projects should be developed?• In which areas can the museum and the Institute co-operate with regard to the Heyerdahl archives that were added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World list in 2011?• How can the museum and the Institute co-operate in relation to the Thor Heyerdahl anniversary in 2014 (centenary celebration)?

In the anniversary year the two organisations had joint meetings and co-operated on major projects such as the anniversary book, ‘Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki in a New Light’, a touring exhibition in Norway and abroad, as well as the centenary celebration on 6 October with a gala dinner at the Kon-Tiki Museum. The co-operation between the Institute and the Kon-Tiki Museum will be continued. Both institutions operate within closely bordering areas in relation to Thor Heyerdahl.

It is important to be able to differentiate between the work of the two institutions – The Thor Heyerdahl Institute and the Kon-Tiki Museum (KTM). The Kon-Tiki Museum is involved in collecting, dissemi-nating, maintaining and researching (Pacific studies). It has the longest history and a defined task. The museum’s task of looking after and disseminating the life work of the adult Thor Heyerdahl is its most important activity.

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute is involved in research-studies-expeditions-conferences-projects. It develops activities “in the spirit of Thor Heyerdahl”, including approaches to research, protection of the environment, ecology and cultural understanding. Furthermore, the Institute is concerned with contemporary, social, global and international issues. The Institute has a national and perhaps in particular an international approach to its activities – precisely in the “spirit” of Thor Heyerdahl.

Note 1 - Accounting principles, important items in the accountsThe annual accounts consist of a Profit & Loss Account, Balance Sheet and Notes, prepared in accord-ance with Norwegian legislation for trust funds, Norwegian accounting law and generally accepted Norwegian accounting practices for small businesses as per 31 December 2014. The annual accounts are based on the fundamental principles and classification of assets and liabilities as defined in accounting legislation. With regard to the use of accounting principles and presentation of transactions and other details, particular emphasis has been placed on financial realities, not merely legal form.

Timing of recorded income and costsIn an ideal organisation income is recorded in connection with an activity, i.e. the income is recorded in the accounts in the same period as the activity that earns the income takes place. Grants awarded in a particular year are recorded in the accounts in the year the grant is received.

10. DIRECTORS’ STATEMENT 2014

Information about the type of activities and how the Institute operates

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute is a foundation established by Vestfold County Council.

The main objective of the Institute is to consolidate and develop Thor Heyerdahl’s ideals within:

• Interdisciplinary research• International dialogue/multi-cultural

collaboration• Protection of the global environment

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute is located in Thor Heyerdahl’s birthplace, the town of Larvik, Norway. Vestfold County Council and Larvik Municipality have granted financial support to the Institute since its establishment. From 2006 onwards, the Institute has also received direct funding from the Norwegian Government. The projects and activities undertaken by the Institute include local, regional, national and international initiatives. They aim to have a multi-disciplinary profile and broad scientific relevance to the Institute’s overall objective.

Financing of the Institute consists of grants towards operating costs and non-restricted trust funds. The financial situation was strengthened considerably in 2011 by the approval of the Institute’s application to use previously restricted trust funds from Larvik Municipality and Vestfold County Council, a total of NOK 4 million. These funds are not intended to cover running costs, but will be used in line with a strengthening of the overall funds strategy.

In order to show consideration to the weak financial situation of Larvik Municipality, the operating funds granted for 2014 were halved in comparison to previous years. They were reduced from NOK 500 000 to NOK 250 000 in 2013, while no operating funds were granted in 2012. The current grant represents a considerable reduction compared to previous years, but at the same time it shows that Larvik Municipality prioritises the Institute despite its weak financial situation. Funds for the Institute are included in the municipality’s financial plan for 2013-2016.

Vestfold County Council has entered into a framework agreement with the Institute for the period 2013-2016. The Institute has been allocated annual operating funds of NOK 500 000 during this period. Funding from the Norwegian Government, NOK 1.1 million in 2014, has been stable since 2006. The increase comes from index regulation.

The Institute had a higher operating budget in 2014 than in previous years. There were two reasons for this: 2014 was Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary (1914-2014), and a large number of activities were organised abroad, in Norway, Vestfold and Larvik. 2014 was a year with a special focus on Heyerdahl’s centenary. One of the main objectives of this focus was that the anniversary events should be good marketing for the Institute and attract attention to the need for sponsorship. The Institute succeeded in obtaining more sponsorship in 2014 than in previous years.

10. DIRECTORS’ STATEMENT 2014

Statement regarding the assumption of continued operations

Operating funds for The Thor Heyerdahl Institute are based on grant applications approved by Larvik Municipality and Vestfold County Council, in addition to direct financing via the Norwegian State Budget. The grants are approved on the basis of applications, memos and annual reports from the Institute.

A market economist was employed on a 50% three-year contract in the autumn 2012 and the Institute has used saved funds to finance this position. The aim of the position is to strengthen the Institute’s funds strategy and increase sponsorship for the Institute.

In accordance with the Norwegian Accounting Act §3-3, it is confirmed that the preparation of the accounts is based on an assumption of continued operations. Quarterly accounts are submitted to the Board of Directors and Institute management for review and evaluation. Alongside the achievement of results, a continuous effort has been made to develop the organisation and profile of the Institute. In 2014 a strategy (foresight) seminar was held in order to discuss the future development of the organisation in relation to the following questions: • What is the big picture? • How can the Institute position itself in a field where an increasing number of players are becoming involved in global issues?• Which future-oriented tasks and goals might attract new funding?

There are currently two institutions in Norway involved in areas of activity closely related to Thor Heyerdahl’s cultural heritage; the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo and The Thor Heyerdahl Institute in Larvik. Both institutions are foundations, but have different portfolios, organisational structures, working practices and content. They have co-operated for many years with regard to increasing the focus on Heyerdahl in Norway. The Kon-Tiki Museum has been represented on the Board of the Institute from 2002-2013, first by the museum director and then by the museum’s former head of research. Regular meetings have been held between the two institu-tions since 2014 and priority is given to ensuring easy access to information about the activities of both institutions.

The Kon-Tiki Museum and The Thor Heyerdahl Institute organised several major joint events as part of the Thor Heyerdahl anniversary in 2014. They also collaborated on an international/national touring exhibition about Thor Heyerdahl’s life and expedi-tions. The touring exhibition and accompanying presentation of the Institute were organised at partner universities in England, Scotland and USA. The exhibition was also set up in conjunction with the Heyerdahl concerts in Andora and Larvik, Thor Heyerdahl’s two home towns in Italy and Norway. The touring exhibition has been on display on Hurtigruten as well as in several Norwegian counties and towns, including Svalbard and the North Cape.

The Institute initiated and financed an anniversary research book about Thor Heyerdahl on the occasion of his 100th birthday. The book, “Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki in a New Light”, was launched at Thor Heyerdahl’s centenary celebration on 6 October 2014, in the presence of the King and

Queen of Norway. In the book, internationally recog-nised researchers from different disciplines discuss the theories underlying the Kon-Tiki Expedition. Thor Heyerdahl’s theories challenged science, and the authors of the book have taken up that challenge. A broad interdisciplinary group of internationally recognised researchers discuss the ideas behind Kon-Tiki in the light of modern knowledge.

Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th birthday and gala dinner on 6 October, with guests from Norway and abroad, was organised in co-operation with the Kon-Tiki Museum. Further co-operation between the two institutions will continue to focus on how they can work together to boost the interest in Heyerdahl in Norway in the future. Representatives from both institutions were involved in joint meetings during 2014 in order to plan and co-ordinate anniversary events.

Co-operation with Larvik Municipality and Vestfold County Council has been directed towards a variety of target groups and has resulted in the initiation of a wide range of activities. In Larvik there have been collaborative projects with the central municipal administration, Larvik Public Library, Kulturhuset Bølgen arts centre, kindergartens and primary schools, the Poesiparken poetry park project, the Kulturskrinet cultural programme for schools, the Tollerodden Foundation, the childhood home of Thor Heyerdahl, and the Flåteregatta raft regatta in Stavern. Events have also been organised in co-operation with sixth form colleges in Vestfold and Larvik.

The framework agreement with Vestfold County Council was followed up in 2014, with meetings and discussions about a variety of projects. The agreement has given the Institute a better platform for collaboration on a regional level. It also allows the Institute to demand county implementation of the Institute’s portfolio with regard to the county’s areas of responsibility. This will improve the balance in terms of the relationship between dialogue, expectations and financial contributions.

Working environment

The Institute has a stable working environment. Its administration comprises one permanent employee,

a managing director in 100% position, as well as a market economist on a 50% three-year contract. Other administrative work is carried out by people employed on short-term contracts. On the basis of results achieved so far and the necessity to cover a wide range of administrative tasks, there is still a long-term need to increase the number of staff members at the Institute.

Larvik Municipality provides one office and working space for an additional person in the municipal building. The working environment is considered satisfactory. In the long term it will be desirable and necessary for the Institute to have its own permanent premises in Larvik, preferably located together with other knowledge-based organisations.

The Board of Directors consists of two women and four men. Equality between the sexes is represented by the Directors’ stated aim for the future compo-sition of the Board.

There have not been any reported occurrences of serious incidents at work or accidents resulting in major material damage or personal injury during the year.

External environment

The Institute has the use of one office and working space for an additional person in the Larvik municipal building. This has no polluting effect on the external environment.

Explanation of the annual financial statements

The 2014 accounts indicate a negative annual result. The background for this is a planned increase in activity relating to Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary, staffing and projects. This is in line with approved strategy and Board decisions, and the use of funds is recorded as a deficit in accounting terms because the non-restricted trust funds were recorded as income in 2010. No income has been allocated in the accounts to this increased level of activity in 2014. The activities were thus financed within the general allocation of funds.

The Board of Directors and management are of the opinion that the annual accounts give a correct indication of the Institute’s financial situation at the end of the year. The Institute has had a high level of goal achievement in relation to defined strategies for 2014.

Short description of the long-term strategies and plans for the period up to 2016

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute has accumulated a varied project portfolio in the period from 2002-2014. It has initiated and carried out a series of local, regional, national and international projects. It has built up a project portfolio over many years and has gained experience from a range of multi-disciplinary projects in co-operation with Norwegian and foreign universities, at different levels of bureau-cracy and with a variety of organisations. There was a high level of activity in and the Institute has become more visible locally/regionally/nationally than in previous years.

The Institute is approaching 2016 with a varied project portfolio. Until now it has been a deliberate strategic choice to focus on the development of new content in the various projects, while at the same time maintaining continuity. Experience so far has shown that the image and reputation of the Institute benefits from combining continuity with the development of new content. The Institute has achieved a high proportion of the aims defined in its official strategies. However, there is one area in which it has not yet achieved such success - that of attracting sponsorship funds for the Institute. More has been achieved in 2014 than in previous years, but feedback received so far indicates that the nature of the Institute’s work is seen as the respon-sibility of the public sector. It is therefore not attractive for business to support its operations. However, the results from 2014 show that there is potential with regard to attracting sponsorship for specific events and activities. It is still a goal to such secure such sponsorship in the future.

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute received a gift in the form of three scholarships from the Norwegian Government to celebrate Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th anniversary. These scholarships will be awarded

nationally within the areas of interdisciplinary research, international dialogue / multi-cultural collaboration, and protection of the global environment.

The Institute has launched the idea of a Heyerdahl Centre in Larvik and has prepared a design concept that has been presented to the political and administrative leadership of Larvik Municipality.

The budget applications to Larvik Municipality, Vestfold County Council and the State Budget 2015 use the results achieved so far as a point of departure to ask for increased funding. The anniversary year 2014 saw an increase in the level of activity and greater visibility on the part of the Institute.

The aim for the future is increased staffing, a more secure financial situation and separate premises for the Institute (Heyerdahl Centre).

Basis for the evaluation of the future development of the Institute

2014 was an anniversary year with a large number of events organised by the Institute on a local, regional, national and international level. In the opinion of the Board of Directors and management the financial situation of the Institute is satisfactory. The employment of a new administrative employee with responsibility for seeking sponsorship funds is intended to strengthen the financial situation of the Institute. This focus produced somewhat better results in 2014 than in previous years, but the Institute is still using saved funds to finance the position.

On the basis of the anniversary events organised in 2014, as well as the Institute’s reputation and status in general, the Board assumes that the Institute should have a sharpened approach to identifying financing sources and measures, as well as developing positive results in the years to come.

An aim for the future is to increase the level of sponsorship funding as well as contributions to the operational and yield funds at the Institute’s disposal. It is also a stated aim to increase personnel resources at the Institute.

These auditing standards demand that we comply with ethical requirements. They also require us to plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement in the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making these risk assessments the auditor takes into consideration internal control relevant to the Institute’s preparation and true and fair presentation of the financial statements. The aim of this is to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Institute’s internal control. An audit also includes an evaluation of the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the management. Furthermore, it evaluates the overall presentation of the financial statements.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Conclusion In our opinion, the financial statements have been prepared in accordance with legislation and regulations to give a true and fair view of the Institute’s affairs as per 31 December 2014 and the results for the accounting year ending on the same date.
