2013-2014 has been an exciting year of investment and growth. By taking our Living Well services out to more and more communities, we have touched the lives of thousands of people with our unique, life affirming, whole person approach to living with cancer.

Inevitably, this ambitious commitment to reaching more people in more places presents us with new challenges. The continuing, exceptional support of Walk the Walk has been essential in helping us to achieve our plans and we are enormously grateful.

Nonetheless, the fundraising environment continues to be challenging for all charities. That means we will continue to be as reliant as ever on the commitment and generosity of our wonderful supporters, volunteers and staff. We remain confident that together, we will rise to these new challenges just as we have in the past.

Looking ahead, there are exciting new developments underway. A number of major cancer charities and other health care providers have commissioned our services and already this work is providing funding that will be key to a sustainable future.

As we continue to build on the legacy left by our inspirational co-founders, Penny Brohn and Pat Pilkington, the dedication and commitment of everyone to the charity’s core purpose - to help people live well with and beyond cancer - remain constant. We are proud of our achievements so far whilst remaining conscious of the many people we have not yet reached. They are, and always will be, our priority.

Thank you - as always. None of our achievements would be possible without you.

Integrated Pathway of CareOur new pathway of supportive care helps clients at each stage of their cancer journey, from the point of diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. That means we have offered a greater range of services to meet the needs of many more people living with cancer. This included a range of courses, groups and individual therapies alongside peer led and community based support.

Key Achievements

What amazed me the most was the amount of clinical and scientific evidence that Penny Brohn presented me. This supported my own sense of what I wanted to do and helped me regain control and purpose for the first time

Jen

Penny Brohn taught me how to slow down, how to live in the moment and how not to rush back to whatever this normal was that I was chasing

Our Whole Person approach We have continued to be powerful advocates for a whole person approach to cancer care, playing an active role in realising the vision of the Government’s National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (NCSI).

Our approach acknowledges the importance of mind, body, spirit and emotions in a person’s wellbeing.

As a result of the rigorous commitment to research and evaluation that sits at the heart of our service development, we have led the agenda on evidenced based whole person cancer care.

Working with the NHSHaving achieved Any Qualified Provider (AQP) status, as part of the NHS commissioning framework, we are now offering a range of psychological therapies through the Bristol & South Gloucestershire Wellbeing Services.

We were commissioned by NHS Trusts in Kirklees, Hull, Scotland and Birmingham to deliver a range of Living Well Services including our new Health & Wellbeing Clinics.

Our Treatment Support Clinic continues to work closely with the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, supporting patients through treatment with a range of therapies, information and self help techniques.

It was interesting to listen to other people talk about their cancer journey and to know that there were people I could talk to about mine. People who really listened and understood what I’d been going through

The Living Well course has shown me how I can help and support myself physically, emotionally and spiritually. I now make healthy choices about food to support my immune system and I have learnt how to relax and be more mindful. And the best thing is, I feel great

Living Well

Delivering courses nationallyWe have successfully established Living Well courses throughout the UK with regional hubs in the North East, Midlands, South West, South Coast and London. We were commissioned by Prostate Cancer UK to deliver our first course in Scotland and are now developing other partnerships north of the border.

Living Well EvaluationOur Living Well course has received international recognition as a validated and evaluated model of service delivery. The evaluation of our services was conducted in collaboration with the University of Westminster. It showed that clients reported significant improvements in their health-related quality of life after completing a Living Well course.

How you have made a difference

Himalayan TrekAn intrepid team of 25 supporters trekked to the base of the Himalayas in November to raise an amazing £24,000.

Long Table LunchOur annual ‘Celebration Women’ event raised £40,000 and was sponsored by Alastair Currie Events. 240 inspirational women joined us for a three-course lunch in our Penny Brohn gardens.

Grants We are deeply indebted for the incredible continued support offered to us by Walk the Walk with a further grant of £1 million this year.

We also received grants from City Healthcare Partnership and Kirklees City Council for Living Well services in Yorkshire.

Black Tie BallOne of our service users and dedicated fundraisers, Rich Meacham, organised a charity ball and raised an impressive £4,100. To date Rich has raised over £12,400 to support our work.

This is just a glimpse of the many fundraising events that have taken place this year. A huge thank you to all our Friends and supporters and to everyone who has donated to one of our fundraising appeals this year. You have helped us reach more people throughout the UK than ever before. We are truly grateful.
