About the Salvadori Center:

Imagine…

A 2nd grader visualizing how they can rearrange geometric shapes on a neighborhood building…

A 5th grader looking at a bridge and seeing how forces act on trusses, cables, and piers…

An 8th grader marveling at new construction and understanding how buildings stand up.

This is what Salvadori does!We use buildings, bridges, and parks within our communities to bring math and science to life for New York City’s students.

We accomplish this through a unique approach to learning and all-inclusive curricula linked to national education standards and grade-specific learning objectives. Students gain a personal understanding of math and science as they work collaboratively on hands-on projects, form hypotheses, test concepts, and draw conclusions – all while having fun.

Our programs work! Four consecutive independent studies show that Salvadori students are engaged, learn more, and are more interested in pursuing careers in math and science.

Salvadori delivers multi-day programs throughout all five boroughs of New York City – teaching 3,500 students in 170 classes, totaling 30,000 student impact hours!

But…we need your help!Although our impact is impressive, we need your help to continue to serve New York City students.

David W. Bellman joined AvalonBay Communities, Inc. in 1997 and is currently Senior Vice President for construction operations. Prior to joining Avalon Properties, Mr. Bellman spent 14 years with Boston Properties, most recently as Senior Vice President of Construction with responsibility for all New York City region construction operations.

AvalonBay Communities is a market leader in luxury residential housing and develops, redevelops, acquires and manages luxury apartment communities in the high barrier-to-entry markets. Their markets are located in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Pacific Northwest and Northern and Southern California regions of the country. The Company owns, or holds interests in more than 82,000 apartments and 275 communities. When Mr. Bellman joined AvalonBay his responsibilities included developing the internal capabilities to construct urban high-rise communities, a new market for the company. He refined and developed the Owner/Builder modeled for large publicly traded companies. In 2013, AvalonBay construction operations exceeded 1.5 billion dollars nationally as both an Owner/Developer and Construction Manager in all of their 14 markets.

Projects include major residential high-rise, large office buildings, complex historical and landmark renovation buildings, adaptive reuse and commercial hotels. Additional unique projects of note include the building of a new 500,000 square foot, state of the art newspaper printing plant for NY Daily News and a major central data center with complete redundant systems for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority. Prior to moving to New York, Mr. Bellman oversaw the construction of four office parks aggregating over one million square feet of office space and 500,000 square feet of structured garage in the metropolitan Washington, DC region. Mr. Bellman studied Engineering Administration at George Washington University and is a member of the New York Building Congress.

Bruce S. Fowle is a Founding Principal of FXFOWLE, an architectural, interiors, planning and urban design firm with offices in New York City and Washington DC. Since starting the firm in 1978, Mr. Fowle has guided it to international recognition for excellence in design and pioneering socially and environmentally responsible architecture and planning. The firm has been recognized with numerous major design awards across the globe and is credited with designing the first green skyscraper in America – the Condé Nast Building at 4 Times Square. Most recently, Bruce led the design for the highly acclaimed revitalization of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.

Mr. Fowle’s dedication and contributions to the architectural industry have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1985, he was elevated to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows, and in 1991 he was named an Academician of the National Academy of Design, where he is currently serving as President. In 1994 and again in 2010, Mr. Fowle received the AIA New York Chapter’s Harry B. Rutkins Award for his planning initiatives in New York City and his many contributions to the profession, respectively. Immediately following 9/11, Mr. Fowle helped initiate New York New Visions – a 21-organization team that set the guidelines for the rebuilding of Downtown Manhattan. In 2004, he was recognized by the New York Chapter of the AIA with its President’s Award, the organization’s highest honor, and in 2008 FXFOWLE received the New York State AIA’s Firm Of The Year Award.

Dr. Antonio Pérez, President of Borough of Manhattan Community College since 1995, is a visionary, high-energy leader with 28 years of experience as a chief executive officer. Since coming to BMCC, he has dedicated himself to making the institution one that is recognized nationally for excellence in teaching, learning, scholarship, and service to students and the community. The College serves over 24,000 students who enroll in 31 degree-granting programs. BMCC is distinguished as number two among the nation’s two-year colleges in awarding associate degrees to minority students.

Recognized by Crain’s New York as one of the City’s top 100 minority business leaders, Dr. Pérez serves on the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation’s World Trade Center Memorial Committee. He sits on the boards of the Business Alliance for Downtown New York, National Museum of the American Indian, New York Simulation Center for Health Services and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. He is Vice President of the Greater New York Councils of Boy Scouts of America.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, Dr. Pérez earned a bachelor’s degree from State University of New York (SUNY) Oneonta and a Master’s and Doctorate in Education from SUNY Albany.
