Almsgiving helps us to

experience giving freely,

which leads to freedom from

the obsession of possessing,

from the fear of losing what

we have, from the sadness

Faith Formation $2 Million

Maria PerezI want to thank God for the opportunity to be a part of the Holy Spirit Institute after understanding my “call” to participate more fully in the Church. The Holy Spirit Institute is helping me to know my faith better so that I can give talks and assist with the formation of women through the ecclesial movement John XXIII.

I was unable to receive the education that I would have liked because my mother did not have the means to send me to school. Now, thanks to the support of the Annual Catholic Appeal, I have received fi nancial assistance and I am able to take courses in Theology through the Holy Spirit Institute. It has been so meaningful for me to know that there are generous donors out there who have provided this opportunity for me. I thank God, the Blessed Virgin Mary and everyone who donates to the Annual Catholic Appeal so that people like me can be formed to be servant leaders in the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Support for the Bishop Mugavero Residence for

Infi rm Clergy $600,000

Father Jim DevineFr. Jim Devine was ordained in 1960 and has been a priest for 58 years in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Fr. Devine shepherded the people of God at our Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, St. Rosa Lima Church, Rockaway Beach and at Our lady of the Skies Chapel at JFK; where he played an important role in ministering and comforting the families of those on TWA Flight 800 that crash off Long Island on July 17, 1996.

In 2005, Father Devine retired and moved to the Bishop Mugavero Residence for Retired Priests. There, he is one of only a few priests who is healthy enough to offer daily mass for his fellow senior priests. Fr. Devine enjoys being a resident at Bishop Mugavero Residence. He appreciates the many services provided for retired priests, such as: aides who care for the priests; in-house physicians, full time nurses and a physical therapy program. Father Devine is very grateful to those who contribute to the Annual Catholic Appeal, which helps pay for the expenses of these services.

Mrs. Fran PugliesePatient at Flushing HospitalIt’s very nice to have a Chaplain with you in the hospital, to come to your bedside when you

are not feeling well. It shows that someone cares and connects with the spiritual part of you as you sit in a new environment with doctor and nurses coming in and out. To have someone come and minister to you is a whole different level of comfort… For me it is important to receive communion regularly, and it’s nice to have someone here to pray with you…Thank you to the supporters of the Annual Catholic Appeal who have made it possible for there to be a chaplain at Flushing Hospital who can bring me Holy Eucharist and pray with me as I try to get well.

Catholic Migration Services

$700,000Marvin Castro arrived on an agriculture visa to pick strawberries in Florida. CMS processed a T-visa because he was not being paid properly and was being mistreated in the workplace. We later helped him naturalize and he was able to petition for his wife and daughter. Since then, both Marvin and his daughter have naturalized and they are currently waiting on his wife.

Marie, a parentMy son truly thrives in this school and has blossomed tremendously just over this pass year. He has progressed from 2nd Honors to 1st Honors this year and couldn’t be any prouder. A Catholic education is one that will shape my son into an honorable young man with compassion and devout principles. Thank you again for the opportunity you gave us this year.

Vocations Support $2.1 Million

Seminarian Randy Nguyen I grew up in Elmhurst, my parents are from Vietnam and I am the oldest of two children. My desire for the priesthood started right from my childhood. I was very active in my parish as a altar server, volunteer and a receptionist in the rectory offi ce. God’s call was very strong. I would go to mass everyday with my grandparents and they gave me good advice.

My journey to the priesthood wouldn’t be possible if it was not for the fi nancial support provided by the Annual Catholic appeal to the vocation offi ce and the seminary programs. I am very grateful for all who are supporting me and giving me the opportunity to discern my call to the priesthood. The seminary has been a gift for my discernment for the priesthood in terms of academics and spiritual life. I know my journey to the priesthood will have challenges, but with the grace of God and through everyone’s prayer this will help guide me in the right path to love God, the church, the people, and become a good disciple of God.

Catholic Charities $1.1 Million

Clyde Walcott I am 60 years old. I was employed, self-conscious about the way I sounded, people found it hard to understand me, and I suffered from mental illness. Then I was referred to the Catholic Charities “World of Work” program for employment support.

After completing my initial assessment in the program, I was warmly received by the staff. I was supported in resume writing, job searching, interviewing, time and money management, and other job-related issues. Eventually, thanks to

the training I received, I became a Peer Advocate and was employed by Catholic Charities in the very same program that had helped me. Today, I am providing guidance and support to my peers with mental health disability to fi nd their way to personal recovery. In addition, I frequently accompany peers to Social Security Administration and Medicaid offi ces to advocate for them in the procurement of their benefi ts. If it were not for the mindfulness, love and understanding of the supervisor and job coaches at Catholic Charities, I may never have been employed. I am ever grateful to them for their service to me. May God continue to bless them abundantly.

Mission of ACAThe Annual Catholic Appeal is directed and operated by Catholic Foundation for Brooklyn and Queens. The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) is an opportunity for each of us to unite in faith as a

Catholic community and to answer the call to meet the needs of those most vulnerable — the hungry, the homeless, the unemployed, the distressed, the unchurched, our children and our elderly, through crucial and essential ministries and services. The Annual Catholic Appeal is conducted as both a parish and diocesan effort, which provides the financial support for the educational, human, pastoral, and spiritual, needs of all in our diocese.

The Annual Catholic Appeal supports the

Diocese and its parishes in three ways:

• Provides an enhanced source of funding in

support of people through ministries, programs, and services throughout our community.

• Offers parishioners a chance to directly provide for the work of the Church.

• Grants each parish an annual opportunity to raise funds for local initiatives and projects. One hundred percent (100%) of all funds received over the parish assigned ACA goal is returned to the parish.
