AYA 100-101 ANTALYA ORIENTATION TOUR (Morning Group) Half Day

Drive along the Mediterranean

coast to the city center to begin

your walking tour. Enter the old

town in style by passing through

Hadrian's Gate, constructed in

honor of his visit here in 130 AD.

Walk into the 13th century as you

pass the Yivli Minare Mosque, the

grooved minaret that has become

a symbol of the city.

Stroll through narrow streets where pretty Ottoman mansions have been

converted to quaint lodges covered with bougainvillea vines. Time moves a little

slower here, so relax and absorb the atmosphere. Later pass the Hidirlik Tower, a

squat stone cylinder that is believed to be the tomb of a 2nd century Roman

concul, as you wander down to the old harbor area. Not long ago this Roman harbor was falling into ruins. It is now an award-

winning yacht marina, surrounded by cafes, restaurants and charming shops with their vividly colored handicrafts. Complete

your morning with a visit to the Antalya Archaeological Museum. Take time to walk through the halls to see the relics

discovered in the Pamphilia Region of ancient Asia Minor from both Greek and Roman eras before returning to the ship.

AYA 101-101 PERGE & ASPENDOS (Morning Group) Half Day

Journey back in time to the ancient city of

Perge. Located on the east side of Antalya, it

was founded by Greek settlers following the

Trojan Wars. Perge flourished under the

Selecuid Kings, who fortified the city for the fist

time. In the Hellenistic period Perge’s prosperity

was made in the coin minting industry. It was

later used by Alexander the Great as his base of

operations. You will visit the 2nd Century Roman amphitheater and stadium, the

city ramparts and the Roman city gate complex. You will also see the Nymphaion,

the Propylaion, the baths and the agora.

Continue to Aspendos, whose amphitheatre is considered the most well-preserved

in the Mediterranean. Built in the 2nd Century AD, it was used for major concerts

and plays until a few years ago. Dating from 1000 BC, the city was a major port and

considered a key stronghold in the region during the 5th Century BC. Water was brought to the city through a marvelous aqueduct

system which is also extremely well preserved. Walk thru this immense building and test the acoustics and view the still standing

aqueducts before returning to the ship.

AYA 202-201 FETHIYE – PATARA & XHANTOS - TLOS 2 days/1 night

Visit the Lycian region of ancient Asia

Minor on this trip. Your first day will visit

Tlos, an ancient ruined Lycian hilltop

citadel near the resort town of Kalkan.

Tlos is believed to be one of the most

important religious Lycian cities, settled

more than 4,000 years ago. Next you will

explore is Patara, a once flourishing

maritime and commercial city on the

south-west coast of Turkey. It is the

birthplace of St. Nicholas, who lived most

of his life in the nearby town of Myra. The

endless coastal strip and the remains of

ancient Patara under sand dunes is a

spectacular sight.

Visit Xanthos and Letoon, two neighboring UNESCO World Heritage sites, in the afternoon. Xanthos was the capital city of the

Lycian Federation and dates back to the 8th century BC. Letoon was the sacred cult center of Lycia and is located less than 10

km to the south of Xanthos. Return to Fethiye after your visit for dinner and an overnight stay.

Your next day begins with a visit to Telmessos, the largest city in Lycia. Located

near the Carian border, it is the site of the modern city Fethiye. The well-

protected harbor of Telmessos is separated from the Gulf of Telmessos by an

island. Check out the findings of the Archaeological Museum and visit Blue

Lagoon (Oludeniz), a remarkable wonder of nature. You will also visit the ruins

of Kayakoy village, once a place for Anatolian Greek-speaking Christians living

in Lycia but now a ghost town. Then head back to Antalya via Korkuteli, where

the ship will be awaiting you.

AYA 201-201 PAMUKKALE – HIERAPOLIS – LAODICIA & APHRODISIAS 2 days/1 night

Explore the highlights of southern Turkey beyond

the Taurus mountains in this program. Explore

ancient social centers and natural features during

this trip through history.

The first day will bring you to Aphrodisias, named

for Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. See her

unique cult image, the Aphrodite of Aphrodisias. In

addition to being the art and sculpture center of

Asia Minor, Aphrodisias is also the site of the most

well preserved stadium and Grand Theater. Spend

your evening in Pamukkale, UNESCO a world

heritage site and enjoy a dinner with your group.

Day two will visit Hierapolis, a UNESCO

World Heritage Site. The hot springs

there have been used as a Spa since the 2nd century BCE. The large necropolis is

filled with sarcophagi. Visit Pamukkale, where the great “cotton castle” baths were

constructed with huge stone blocks without the use of cement. The complex, which

was constructed in the 2nd century BCE, constitutes a good example of vault type

architecture.

You will thengo to Laodicea, situated between the narrow valleys of the small rivers Asopus and Caprus. See the building built

by Antiochus II Theos, in 261-253 BC to honor of his wife Laodicea. Some of the earliest churches of Asia Minor were started in

this area. In fact, the Church of St. Philip was recently discovered by Turkish archaeologists. Head back to Antalya through the

scenic Taurus Mountains.

AYA 103-201 KEKOVA – SIMENA & MYRA - DEMRE Full Day

Spend the morning in the ancient Roman town of

Myra and the small town of Demre. Demre is

best known as the home of St. Nicholas – yes,

THAT St. Nick - who died here in 345 AD! Visit

rock-carved tombs, an ancient Roman theater,

the tomb of St. Nicholas and the beautifully

decorated church that is dedicated to him.

From Demre, you will continue to Cayagzi

and board a motorboat for a 2 hour cruise

along the Kekova shores. During the cruise,

youwill have the opportunity to see the

sunken city (caused by earthquakes) and

Lycian sarcophagus through the crystal clear

water. Then you can climb to the Simena

Castle and enjoy the view. Students may

enjoy refreshments, take time for a swim or paddle around in an ocean kayak (optional –

see below). Finally, visit ancient Teimussa to see the Lycian cemeteries and ruins.

Note: This program requires approximately 2.5 hours of travel time each way.

AYA 104-201 OPTIONAL SEA KAYAK in KEKOVA (only with AYA 103-201) 2 hours

Sea Kayaking is an exciting and fun

way to explore the famous Kekova

region. Paddle at your own pace over

the Kekora’s famous Sunken City.

The area is off-limits to swimmers

and divers, making kayaking the

best way to see this artifact. It is the

closest you can get to the

underwater foundations, walls and

mosaics dating back 2000 years.

Before you set out, our trained guides give a full briefing about the equipment we

use and safety. There is a safety boat close by at all times. The worst thing that

can happen is that you get wet! You don't need any previous experience to try sea

kayaking – the paddles are very light and we go mostly with the current. The first part of the trip is the longest leg taking us across

to the Ancient Shipyard (Tersane). Here we get our first swim break! Our paddling continues along the coast line over the sunken

city of Kekova. We then have our last leg of paddling back to base passing sarcophagi often poking out of the sea. Bring your

sense of adventure.
