The world of mobile telecommunication is on its wayto change from pure voice applications to high speeddata networks. The evolution of wireline based IP/Eth-ernet, DSL, fibre to the home, and powerline commu-nications is stimulating fixed broadband data and willstrongly leverage mobile applications. Availability ofseamless mobile broadband data anywhere anytimewill revolutionise and foster new service applicationsin the field of communication, industry, transportationand health care.
WLAN/Wi-Fi already provides real broadband wire-less experience to nomadic users, and Carrier ClassWiMAX / 3G will enhance broadband wireless, pushing for real mobile high speed access and guar-anteed quality of service.
Communication services will be combined in manydifferent ways to offer high speed digital data toindustry, office and residential users. Desktop comput-ers, television sets, notebooks and handheld terminalswill turn into multifunctional devices for internet ande-mail access, VPN connectivity, instant messaging, video conferencing, media streaming, interactive gam-ing, VoIP, E-Commerce, telemetry, remote biometricanalysis and many more applications.Developed countries usually have a fairly good wire-line Metro Area infrastructure. Fibre based networksprovide E1/T1 access for industrial and office envi-ronments. CATV and plain old telephone lines providelast mile broadband DSL access for residential users, and fibre to the home is currently being heavily pro-moted in some countries.Still there is a demand for wireless broadband access
in remote and urban areas. The key driver for this ismobility along with the expectation of the end usersto have broadband data available at their finger tipswherever they are roaming. On top of mobile serv-ices, fixed wireless is an attractive alternative to deliv-ering competitive broadband data to underservedareas in emerging and developed markets. Thanks toits nature, it is straightforward to deploy and does notinvolve the prohibitive costs of laying cable networks.Today three major technologies for broadband wire-less access can be identified:
BROADBAND WIRELESS ACCESS A BRIEF SUMMARY
WLAN/ Wi-FiWiMAX.3G Systems (UMTS, CD MA 2000, TD-SCDMA)
Wi-Fi networks (the brand name for WLAN) arefocussed on public hot spots, offices and the industrialenvironment. City-wide meshed networks will play animportant role in municipal applications for both pub-lic authorities and private users.Wi-Fi has experienced fast but unorganised growthand is mostly a rather patchy solution. Roaming is pos-
sible within single Wi-Fi networks but is not supportedon a general scale. Nevertheless, WLAN networkshave gained wide acceptance and proven to be anefficient solution for short distance wireless coverage.Wi-Fi will also be a versatile option to divert WiMAXand 3G services into picocell areas.Due to the unlicensed spectrum utilised, Wi-Fi may suf-fer from RF-interference of co-located systems operat-ing in the same ISM band. Moreover, limitations existwith regard to QoS. However, if Wi-Fi deployment iswell co-ordinated, disturbances can be reduced to aminimum.

BROADBAND WIRELESS ACCESS A BRIEF SUMMARY
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for MicrowaveAccess) and future 3G systems will be the real nextquantum leap to deliver wireless broadband for busi-ness, SoHo (Small office Home office) and residentialusers.WiMAX aims to provide broadband last mile accessfor fixed (IEEE 802.16-2004) as well as mobile(802.16e-2005) wireless services and long rangepoint to point RF and millimetre wave backhauling. It addresses the consumer, office and industry mar-kets. WiMAX networks will be operating in licensedfrequency bands to ensure high speed access at an
appropriate QoS. Similar to the Wi-Fi Alliance, theindustry has founded the WiMAX Forum, a non-profitorganisation which promotes WiMAX and certifiesinteroperability of WiMAX products and network com-ponents in accordance with IEEE 802.16 and ETSIHiperMAN wireless MAN standards. Standardisationand interoperability are key to the success of WiMAXas this will ensure a competitive environment anddrive down equipment costs through integration andeconomies of scale in mass production.
Possibly, WiMAX 802.16 will become a member ofthe IMT-2000 family besides the existing 3G tech-nologies. This would allow WiMAX to have the sameaccess to spectrum as todays pure 3G networksand would support WiMAX as an alternative wirelesstechnolgy besides 3G.
3G systems are already being rolled out on a largerscale and will offer initial medium speed data. Amigration path for 3G evolution towards real broad-band data is already being defined, and one canexpect Wi-Fi, WiMAX and 3G systems to complement
each other, finally converging into a 4G world.

Throughout the recent years, IEEE 802.11 WirelessLocal Area Networks (WLAN) have become a popu-lar and widely adopted means for mobile data trans-mission in various applications. Initially deployed asa picocell wireless extension of Ethernet in offices, hotspot and industrial WLAN networks have grown from
local applications to city-wide municipal networksdelivering state of the art service to private and publicusers.
WLAN WIRELESS LOCAL AEREA NETWORK
Versatile solution for public hot spots, wireless meshed networks, industrialapplications and office communication.
Wireless networks for data transmission so-calledWireless Local Area Networks have been underdiscussion for years, but only since the publication ofthe 802.11b standard enabling raw transmission ratesof 11 Mbps has this vision become a reality. The evo-lution of new technologies from 802.11a to 802.11g
have increased data throughput to 54 Mbps, ena-bling real time video streaming and rich contentapplications. With 802.11n making use of MIMO

(Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology, capacitywill be increased even more up to several 100 Mbps.Wireless local area networks operate in non-licensedfrequency bands from 2.4 GHz to 2.4835 and sub-bands from 5.15 to 5.875 GHz. Frequency allocationdiffers slightly in different countries; detailed informa-
tion is available from the national regulation authori-ties/ OFCOMs. A brief overview is given on page13.
WLANs offer versatile solutions for remote access toimportant information and data. Nomadic applica-tions such as real time access to presentations orvideo streaming during meetings, data gathering andexchanging on production lines or during servicecalls, control of warehouse logistics flows and set-ting up of ad hoc networks and many more can berealised thanks to the straightforward deployment ofWLANs.
Hospitals utilise WLANs for fast and mobile accessto patient records by doctors, nurses and technicians.Due to their limited transmit power, indoor WLANsystems may be even used in intensive care stationswithout providing harmful interference to the sensitivemedical equipment.Of course, WLANs can also be utilised in outdoorenvironments, for example for providing Internet ande-mail access on trains and subways, backhauling
high rate data traffic between buildings or connectingto remote video surveillance cameras. Supporting var-ious applications at low to medium costs of ownershipalong with the capability of rapid deployment has ledto the tremendous success of WLAN networks.

WIFI SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE AND NETWORK COVERAGE
WiFi - networks offer versatile solutions forpeer-to-peerpoint-to-multipointmeshedpoint-to-point backhauling
networks.
Ad-Hoc/Peer to Peer NetworksUsers communicate directly with the other users sub-scriber equipment without routing traffic through a
backbone network. The signal transmission distancerelies on equipment performance and the local envi-ronment.
Point to MultipointThe WiFI network provides a cellular type of cover-age connecting multiple buildings and multiple userswith a centralised WLAN base station infrastructure. This is often also referred to as last mile access. Thesimplest way to realise Point to Multipoint coverageis to use omni-directional antennas. When capacityneeds to be increased, additional access points willhave to be fitted and directional antennas will have tobe used to divide coverage into different sectors.
Peer-to-peer networks
Wireless network: point to multipoint
WLAN picocell networks
Given that there are three independent frequencychannels at 2.4 GHz and even more at 5 GHz inmost countries, WiFi can be used to set up picocellnetworks having a frequency reuse factor of min. 3based on a three sector arrangement. This will allowhigh density metro area networks supporting seamlessroaming.

Meshed networksMeshed networks utilise a number of access points, each being interconnected to its neighbouring accesspoint. This allows dynamic routing of data packetsthrough the system between any of the subscribers. The network is self-learnable and data paths arechosen according to optimum signal to interferenceconditions to ensure fast and reliable transmission.Meshed networks are being increasingly deployed inlarge scale metro areas to facilitate access to mobileapplications anywhere anytime.
Point to pointPoint to point radio bridges are used to backhaullocal LANs to backbone networks or to interfacebetween separate LANs at different locations (i.e.between buildings). This eliminates the need for
expensive cable or fibre interconnect options andcostly truck roll.
Stand alone wireless network with access pointFinally, the simplest WLAN network consists merely ofa single access point or WLAN router which providesmultiple users with a wireless connection to the fixednetwork (e.g. DSL).The planning and installation of Wireless LANs is aroutine process for established IT contractors, wirelessInternet service providers and system integrators. Net-
work enhancement is possible through the choice ofappropriate antennas and antenna sites. RF propaga-tion characteristics, security improvements, optimisedperformance or site aesthetics are key concerns for

POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF WIRELESS LOCAL AREA NETWORKS
The introduction of WLANs offers users the ability tocross boundaries defined by fixed networks. WLANsolutions overcome the physical limitations of fixednetworks and provide a high degree of flexibility atmoderate capital expenditures.
FlexibilityIn many enterprises, workers from different disciplinesself-organise and re-organise in specific teams. Theability to scale a fixed network in line with dynamicbusiness needs presents a burden not just in terms
of time, but also capital investment and operatingexpenses. This is often a key factor in serviced officesand leased premises.
Building and planning restrictionsWithin listed or older buildings such as universities, new cable management systems and wall penetrat-ing solutions to support new or existing wired LANsare impossible to implement in compliance with localplanning laws. In commercial and private rentedpremises, the owner can often demand and chargefor removal of equipment installed by the outgoingtenant.
Mobile access to corporate informationIn many industries, mobile employees require accessto their corporate data networks. From warehouse-men, service engineers to sales representatives, rapidconnectivity to corporate information and systems irre-spective of location is a competitive advantage.
CostsHigh-bandwidth fibre optic cabling provides an alter-
native to building interconnections. A complex cablingsolution becomes increasingly more complicated.Advantages of Wiress LANs:
Flexible and rapid exchange of dataShared usage of costly resources (e.g. printers)Convenient access to e-mail and InternetHigh speed connectivity (evolution to 54 MBit/s)
From the many advantages of WLAN, some typicalapplications and network configurations include:
Wireless connection to an existing LANThis enables a radio connection between PC worksta-tions. The access point acts as a gateway betweenthe wireless clients and the existing Ethernet. Withinthe access point cell, the local fixed network can beutilised. A direct benefit is that the existing net can besimply and rapidly extended at minimum cost.
Public access (open access)Access points in the public domain offer a simple andquick method of providing access to the Internet and
other varied information sources.
Typical applications:

WLAN STANDARDS
Why standards?Interoperability of components and networks is key tothe success of WLAN. Common standards protect endusers from restrictive proprietary technologies andfacilitate maximum competition. A cornerstone in wire-less network development has been the establishmentof an open standard known as 802.11. On this basis, customers are able to select and purchase equipmentappropriate to their requirements and have the confi-dence that they will work seamlessly together withoutbeing tied to a single source. This compatibility is
guaranteed and controlled through the Wi-Ficertification and trademark scheme.
Look for the WiFi-certificate!Wi-Fi is the compatibility brand for access points andsubscriber equipment from the Wireless Ethernet Com-patibility Alliance (WECA). This WECA Wi-Fi certifica-tion guarantees users compatibility of IEEE 802.11and 802.11a, b, g, n products from different sources. The goal is to establish and maintain the Wi-Fi qual-ity mark for WLAN products on a worldwide basis.WECA has agreements in place with the majority ofWLAN component manufacturers to certify theirproducts.

WIMAX
WORLDWIDE INTEROPERABILITY FOR MICROWAVE ACCESS
Encouraged by the success of WLAN systems,WiMAX strives to deliver broadband data throughhigh density urban and suburban wireless networks. It also facilitates long range backhauling to remoteareas based on standardised and interoperableequipment. However, the key focus of WiMAX is onfixed nomadic and mobile applications such as
access to internet and e-mailaccess to local information servicese-businesspublic safety solutions and remote surveillance
office communicationremote biometric analysistelemetrygoods trackinginfotainmentcarrier class VoIP
based on IEEE standards 802.16-2004 and 802.16-2005, respectively. Having two distinct WiMAXstandards will allow operators to scale their networksto different needs, depending on whether they wantto support last mile access only (Fixed WiMAX) ormobile roaming (Mobile WiMAX). Fixed WiMAX isa particularly interesting solution for providing lastmile access in developing regions without any existingwireline infrastructure. It primarily targets residentialand office users having no or no reliable access tobroadband services today, and it will enable high
speed access in remote areas for which up to now ithas been too costly to provide broadband infrastruc-ture. Mobile WiMAX will enable access to informa-tion while on the move, e.g. in the car, on the train orsimply when walking around in metro areas. Once

fixed broadband has become common feature, itcan be expected that people would not like to miss itwhen roaming between different places.WiMAX networks will be rolled out in a way similarto 2G and 3G sectorised networks. Contrary to 2Gand 3G systems, many WiMAX deployments use aninitial three sector arrangement to support sufficientcapacity from the very start. As the networks grow, the antenna configuration may turn to a four sectorarrangement and more and more base stations willbe fitted into the system to cope with increased traffic.
Very similarly to 2G and 3G networks, WiMAX willfinally migrate to a microcell configuration with rawdata rates of up to 100 Mbps being available withincertain areas close to base stations.
InteroperabilityInteroperability of equipment and networks is key tosuccessful growth of WiMAX. Similarly to the Wi-Fiorganisation, the WiMAX Forum has been formed asa non-profit organisation that promotes and certifiesinteroperability of products and networks and helps toestablish WiMAX as an important wireless broadbandaccess technology.Frequency spectrum for WiMAXUnlike WLAN networks, WiMAX networks will oper-
ate in licensed frequency bands which will provideaccurate Quality of Service and help to protectoperators investments. The spectrum accessible to WiMAX in different geo-graphic areas is shown in the diagram on the nextpage. The major frequency bands for WiMAX are
2.3 GHz 2.4 GHz2.496 GHz to 2.69 GHz (ITU option forIMT2000 systems)3.3 GHz to 3.4 GHz3.4 GHz to 3.6 GHz3.6 to 3.8 GHz
Additional frequency bands may be added in thenear and midterm future. The licensing process has already started in manycountries and has even been completed in others.

Base station infrastructure:WiMAX will increasingly utilise tower top base sta-tions with short corrugated jumper cables to theantenna. This is possible because of the advanceddesign and operational experience with active tower
top equipment now available. Feeder lines running tothe antennas will be replaced by fibre optic assem-blies (e.g. Fibre-To-The Antenna ODC assemblies fromHUBER+SUHNER) which will connect the base bandgateway.Tower top base stations help to prevent increasedfeeder loss at higher frequencies (i.e. 2.5 GHz) andcut the cost of truck roll and installation. In addition, they allow operational costs to be improved dueto reduced overall power consumption for RF andcooling. The base station itself and the base band
gateway unit may even be set up at distant locations, which offers the flexibility to cope with site restrictions. We offer a variety of WiMAX base station antennasto meet different OEM and operator requirements.

Customer premises equipment (CPE):WiMAX will make use of outdoor and indoor CPEunits depending upon the overall link loss require-ments. Indoor CPE units are applied at sites close tothe WiMAX base station and will come either withembedded and/or separate adjustable directiveantennas or switched beam antennas. Outdoor CPEshelp to prevent additional RF losses inherent to build-

ANTENNA TECHNOLOGY
Linear vertical (standard WLAN technology)The radio waves leave the antenna in a vertical direc-tion with respect to the horizon.
Cross polarised (dual slant, vertical-horizontal)Are mainly used in mobile radio systems: Two trans-mit/receive paths exist for radio signals. Diversity sys-tems are easily implemented with such antennas. It is important to ensure that the transmit and receivepolarisation are identical for either side of the WLANsystem. With different polarisations, an increase insystem loss must be taken into account.
Radiation patternsThe radiation characteristic of an antenna is rep-resented through a simple diagram. Instead of theseparate horizontal and vertical radiation patterns, modern test ranges produce a 3-dimensional antennapatterns from where the vertical and horizontal pat-terns can be extracted.
PolarisationOur antennas are available in the following polarisation schemes:
Right and left hand circular(used in high reflection areas to reduce interference):The radio waves rotate along their wavelength in a360 degree right or left handed direction.

ANTENNA TECHNOLOGY
Beam width of the antennaA further important antenna feature is the beamwidth. This can be calculated from the radiation patterns, and is defined at the point where the radiated powerhas fallen by half. This is known as the 3dB point, and is calculated by the following method: Extend aline from the centre of the patterns to the first intersec-tion of the antenna energy and the -3dB point. Thisdefines the angle, i.e. 30 degrees.Extend a second line, intersecting the antenna energyat the next -3dB point, this defines the second angle,
i.e. -30 degrees. The sum of these two measurementsis the antenna beamwidth, which for the aboveexample would be 60 degrees. This method can beused for both the Horizontal and Vertical radiationpatterns.
GainAntenna gain is a measure of how energy is confinedinto a certain direction. Whilst an ideal antenna with0 dBi gain radiates energy in all directions (isotropi-cally), a directional antenna concentrates the sameamount of energy into a section of the space on aspecific heading. For the sake of understanding, an isotropic elementcan be simply compared to a balloon. When pressedfrom above and below the typical characteristic of anomni antenna is represented. With directional anten-
nas, one of these two ovals is directed with a reflec-tor in a single direction. When the gain is given inrespect to a Isotropic element, the unit is specified asdBi, when in respect to a half wave dipole, the unit isdBd (dBi = dBd + 2.15 dB).
dBi Gain of antenna with reference to an idealisotropic antenna
dBd Gain of antenna with reference to a half-wavedipole
dBm Power referenced to 1 milli wattdB Logarithmic unit
Useful dB values:+ / 3dB represents a doubling or halving of thepower
As a rule of thumb 6dB represents a doubling in linkdistance
