Its easy to join our reister and become apotential donor. But its still somethin youneed to think about. Chanin yourmind ater youre asked to donate could
be devastatin or the person relyin ona donation to save their lie.
HOW TO JOIN:
1 Talk throuh your decision with your
amily and riends. They can help youdecide i its somethin you really want todo. It also means that it wont come as asurprise to them i youre asked to donate.
2 Complete an application orm. You cando this in one o three ways: a) onlineat www.anthonynolan.or b) by phone

Many o our previous donors say they eltnervous and excited when they ot the call.For them, the best part was knowin theycould be the one to save a persons lie.
Heres what will happen i its you:
Beore you donate well take blood samplesto conrm i you really are a match. Youll thenbe iven a ull medical examination to makesure youre ready.
Choosing how you donate
Youll have a choice o two methodsalthouh you should be willin to donateusin either.
Peripheral blood stem cell collection donating through a vein in your arm
What happens?
A nurse will come to your home or oceto ive you injections over three days.These injections help your body produceand release stem cells into your blood.Youll then come to a hospital in Londonto make the donation but you wont needan overniht hospital stay or a eneralanaesthetic. Your blood is taken throuh atiny tube in your arm, and the cells aredonated by passin the blood throuh amachine. Side eects can include fu-likesymptoms and achin but theyre usuallymild and last just a couple o days.

Bone marrow donation donating stemcells taken rom bone marrow in the pelvis.What happens?

Bone marrow is spony tissue ound insideour bones. It produces vital stem cells. Stemcells in turn produce red blood cells, whichcarry oxyen around the body; white blood
cells, which ht inection; and platelets,which help stop bleedin. I bone marrowis damaed or destroyed by a disease andits subsequent treatment, it can have acatastrophic eect on the body.
A transplant o healthy stem cells rom a
matchin donor is oten the last hope ormany people with this type o disease.The stem cells are injected into the patientsblood stream where they bein to producenew blood cells.
For the transplant to work, the donorneeds to be a close match with the person
receivin their stem cells.
While some people will fnd that matchwithin their amily, nearly three-quarters arelet desperately searching to fnd a match ina stranger. They rely on us to nd that match.We rely on people like you to join our reister
and help save more lives.Every year, around 1,400 people turnto Anthony Nolan to fnd a donor topotentially save their lie. Were able tomatch around hal with a suitable donor.

PERIPHERALBLOOD STEMCELL (PBSC)COLLECTION
POTENTIAL RISKS OF THE DONATION
Side eects may include mild fu-like symptomssuch as headaches, and muscle and bone painwhich are normally alleviated by a non-aspirincontainin medication. Symptoms usuallydisappear within 24 hours o the last injection.

Blood stem cells are also ound in the bloodstream (peripheral blood), but in muchsmaller numbers.
On consecutive days, donors receive threeo the 4 day series o injections o syntheticrowth actor (g-CSF) at work or at homeiven by a trained nurse. This rowth actorstimulates production and movement oblood stem cells to the peripheral blood.
Youll have the ourth course o injections inLondon the day beore the rst collection.
A needle is inserted into veins in each o
your arms and the blood is passed throuha leucapheresis machine which removes whiteblood cells and a small amount o plasma only.Youll undero this procedure as an outpatient(4-5 hours total in a London hospital).
There may be one or two collections onsuccessive days. I a second collectionis required this will involve 4-5 hours inhospital on the second day.
Usually, youre able to resume normalactivities ater two days.
