A heartfelt epic set in 1920 fromIrish director Neal Jordan,Michael Collins is the biographyof the charismatic andcontroversial Irish rebel leaderwho led the fight for independence from Britain.Among the most beautiful and atmosphericallyphotographed movies of the 90s, Michael Collinsis also a rich and intelligent study of the nature ofpolitics and leadership: the IRA spokesman, full offiery convictions, eventually gives way to the moremature negotiator who strives to reach acompromise solution and is politically undone inthe process. Liam Neeson gives a grand andtowering performance as Collins, but for all thecharacters legendary, heroic, or otherwise larger-than-life attributes, Jordan and Neeson also keephim human.

Michael Collins was assassinated on August 22,1922 in Bal na Blth, Ireland.

    Reading I: I Kings 19:9, 11-13Responsorial Psalm 85:9, 10, 11-12, 13-14

Reading II: Romans 9:1-5Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33

    Needs

This Sunday most of us will notice mainly the storyof Jesus walking on water, together with Petersinking into it. But there is another very interestingspiritual dimension that i would like to suggest.

What do you think was going onin Jesus own heart and soulduring these events?

We know that Jesus hademotions. We have seen thembefore, as when lazarus diedand especially last week whenhe was hit hard by news of Johnthe Baptists death. So he hadtaken a boat to a deserted placein order to grieve quietly byhimself. But the crowd got therefirst and immediately pressed him into servicewhen he arrived. instead of the hushed time ofgrief he needed, Jesus heart had been moved bythe needs of the suffering people before him. Hespent hour after hour, healing and curing andfeeding. Exhausting.

Then comes the story for this Sunday. Jesus sendsthe crowd away at last. And notice a strange thing, usually ignored. He made the disciples get into aboat and precede him to the other side. Why sendthem ahead? Why stay there alone? The answer iseasy. He still needed to be alone to process Johnsdeath, which he had not yet done.

He climbed up on a mountainside and took hisown time to commune with his heavenly Father. The gospel says that by now it was evening, andthat Jesus prayed well into the night. A gusty windcame up. He could not have been comfortable.

i would love to know what his prayer was like. Hehad studied the scriptures since his youth, somaybe the story in our First reading came to mind.

Spirituality of the Readings There the prophet Elijah too was up on a mountain-side, and there too, a heavy wind came up. Thelord was not in the wind, we are told. Nor in theearthquake that followed. Nor in the fire that camenext. The lord god was in the final, still, smallvoice. *

Jesus heard this voice too on the mountain-side.But what did he feel?

lets take a shot at it. He opened his bruised trustto the Father, and along with this trust, his verypersonal loss. Perhaps Abba reassured him that, even against the evidence, all human beings haveto rely on god, especially when it seems that

tragedy has the upper hand.yes, Jesus was divine, but divineconsciousness and knowledgerested in the deepest realm of hissoul, and needed this silent timeto emerge.

in prayer, Jesus returned to hisnormal level of trust in god, butstronger now. in the same waythat he learned obediencethrough what he suffered(Hebrews 5:8), maybe he had tolearn a higher level of trust

through loss. Trust is not a sheer act of the will, notsimply a blind decision, but a quiet re-emergenceof gods faithful love.

Then, at last, Jesus walked on water. How must itfeel to leave the solid ground and walk on slushyliquid? Perhaps this walking was symbolic of thetrust he had come to in his night of prayer.

Maybe trust feels like walking on water.

Have you tried it lately? Have you been willing tostep out of the boring boat of your daily life andput yourself, your everything into the lordshands?

Consider this an invitation to do so.___________________*The newer official translation of these words is: tinywhispering sound. Artist lorenzo veneziano, 1370.
