HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 268, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great Christmas and your New Year is beginning out well. I am looking forward to another year of social events with the crew. We will have game nights, movie nights and maybe go out to eat a couple of times. If you have an ideas then send them to me and we will work to see that it happens. You can always contact me at the email that is below my signature. I am always looking for people who want to write a Trek news article or a movie/television review, or even a short story they might want to share. Please feel free to email those as well. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

P.S. Can you find the Klingon and the Andorian in the cookies on the cover?

A new year stretches out before us, full of new beginnings, adventures, and the promise of better things to come.

Frankly, I’m glad to see 2013 go. It was not the best of years for me or my sister.

Also this time of year the word resolution comes up. I’m not making any New Year’s resolutions this year. I plan to

just work on several projects in my house: projects like replace the front and back doors; remodel the master bathroom;

etc. You know, small projects. Actually, I guess those are resolutions.

Now to ships’ business. First, we can look forward to another year of fun meetings and socials. And several major

socials are the Spring Cookout, the Captain’s Cookout, and the Fall Feast. Next, since this is an even numbered year, we

will hold an election for Second Officer and the Executive Committee. This usually takes place in the fall, but it won’t

hurt to start thinking now about whom you would nominate for these positions. Currently, our Second Officer is Brenda

Miller. The Executive Committee consists of Sue Ellen Mohney, Denby Potts, and Danny Potts.

Well, that seems to be all. See you next time.

We had a nice social. Pete had pizza from Little Caesars and pop to drink. We watched an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. We also discussed movies and actors/actresses to play different roles we would like to see.

Attendance: 8 people.

Personnel Updates:

If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,

The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get

the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be

Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff.

Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.

Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC

Academy has for you.

North Carolina Councilman Resigns in Klingon

Are you tired of your Job and want to quit. Not sure what the best way to tell your boss that you are done

with the job. You might like to take a clue form David Waddell who resigned form Indian Trail council in

North Carolina in Klingon: The not read:

The note also had the translation:

Teach (the) city (the) constitution I will return next time to (witness) victory. Resignation occurs in 2014 the 31st of January. Perhaps today is a good day (to) resign.

David Waddell

Mayor Alvarez accepted the resignation but felt it was an embarrassment to council. The Mayor, when talking to the

Charlotte Observer used some Star Trek Speak by giving this statement: “When things have a galactic or absurd quote,

that’s when people pay attention,” Alvarez noted. “I would’ve preferred if he had sent (a resignation letter) in English to

give to the council. But I wish him luck. Live long and prosper.”

The resignation may not have been professional in some circles but still it’s a good way to leave a job.

Interview with Gene Roddenberry from 1973 found

An interview with Gene Roddenberry by Scott Arthur (Texas Radio Hall of Famer) has been put up on YouTube. Mr

Arthur was going through some of his old interviews form his long career and found the forgotten interview. The

interview is about 30 minutes long and has Gene talking about Star Trek, pushing boundaries and the future of humanity.

Star Trek Phase II comes out with Kitumba

Star Trek Phase II (formerly New Voyages) has come out with a new episode ‘Kitumba’. Star Trek Phase II is a fan

base group that has taken a script that was written for a re-launch of Star Trek that was to take place in 1977. The

relaunch was shelved for the movie that came out instead.

‘Kitumba’ was a two-part episode that has been condensed down to one. It is about a suicide mission that the

Enterprise is sent on to the Klingon home world. The Klingon culture is a big part of the show with the scenes shot on

location at Fort Ticonderoga. James Cawley will again reprise the role of Captain James T. Kirk. After this, Brian Gross

will take over the part of Captain Kirk in further episodes.

‘The Holiest Things” is due out near Valentines day.

Intelligence (Monday, CBS)

***** (Warning there may be spoilers) *****

When I first saw the ads for this program I thought it was going to be a cross between Six Million Dollar Man, Jake 2.0 and Chuck. After watching the first episode it is just a serious Chuck. The lead Josh Holloway (James ‘Sawyer’ Ford of ‘Lost’) plays Gabriel Vaughn who is a Special Forces soldier who has had a chip placed in his head that gives him access to the web and spy satellites. This is like Chuck in that he can pool data from different sources to get a clearer picture of what is happening. The improvement is he doesn’t have to have a new down load every season to do the job. He still has a protection detail in the form of secret service agent Riley Neal played by Meghan Ory (Ruby form “Once Upon a Time”). She is there to protect him from doing something stupid that would get the chip lost to a foreign power.

For the Star Trek fans, John Billingsley is playing Dr. Shenandoah Cassidy. Dr. Cassidy is the one who invented the chip and planted it into Josh’s brain. For the CSI fans, there is Marg Helgenberger (Catherine Willows) who is playing Lillian Strand the director of the intelligence agency that Josh is assigned to.

As a program it seems like another recycled program (i.e. Chuck) looking from a different angle. I liked Chuck. It was funny and the actors seemed to work well together. Intelligence, by taking it from a serious side, may make this better as it will tie in well with other drama shows that CBS seems to excel at like NCIS and Mentalist. The down side is that its regular time slot is across from Castle which already pulls in the Sci-Fi fans because of Nathan Fillion.
