WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety is a feeling of worry, or unease, typically about an upcoming event or something with an uncertain outcome.

Anxiety is a feeling that everyone has felt at some point in time.

This feeling can be brought on by many different situations.

ANXIETY DISORDERS

Most common mental illnesses in the United States.

Affects 40 million people in the United States from ages 18 and older.

There are three types of anxiety disorders.

- Generalized

- Panic

- Social

GENERALIZED ANXIETY

The most common of the three types of anxiety disorders.

Feeling an unrealistic amount of worry and tension.

“High strung” “Nervous” “Tense”

PANIC DISORDER

Sudden feeling of panic or fear.

Generally doesn’t come with a warning.

Symptoms: chest pains, sweating, nausea, hard to breathe.

SOCIAL ANXIETY

Feeling overwhelmed and self-conscious about every social situation.

The worry often centers on a fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment.

In some cases, people with a social disorder will seclude themselves from others.

HOW DOES SOMEONE GET AN ANXIETY DISORDER?

“Anxiety doesn’t come out of nowhere; rather, it typically stems from some combination of three major contributing factors… genetics, parenting and trauma.”

DEALING WITH ANXIETY

A few strategies that may help someone deal with anxiety.

- Take a few deep breaths.

- Count to ten.

- Maintaining a positive attitude.

- Talk with a doctor or therapist.

- Medication.

Anxiety is a normal feeling that everyone has once in a while. People that have an anxiety disorder can experience anxiety to more of an extreme level. But there are ways people can deal with their anxiety. It is not impossible to overcome.
