I would like to extend my gratitude to all of our donors and volunteers as through your commitments and contributions we reached more children than we ever have in our history as Tent 58. Knowing that we want to be a donor driven, child-centric organization has allowed us to focus on those with the most need and reach out with a very succinct and powerful message to allow others to become even more involved and even more engaged. We look forward to bulking upon this momentum and reaching even more children with every year that passes.

In my first year as Chair, I am pleased that we have a Board of Directors who are diverse in their passions and gifts to Variety. We introduced board strategic initiatives to allow each board member to create a project that can be their legacy gift to the organization. During this past year, each board member met with me to discuss, what their personal strategic initiative will be and as we move forward, we look forward to having each board member begin the work of executing upon their personal initiative and eventually introduce it in all its detail, to create real impact for the organization and for the children we serve. I wish to thank all of the board members we have had this year, and as some move on to continue their philanthropic work in other areas, we can be proud that they each have left a contribution worth celebrating!

I would like to thank Jeff Liba and his team. It is no feat to be able to execute upon our mandate with such a strong team, and not a large one. This year we saw the organization move into a new location that symbolically supports this committed direction of being effective and focused towards our key programs. Our focus on serving children with special needs has allowed us to reach out to many more like minded organizations and people who now actively recommend and promote the work Variety does – this is success! Our events, fundraising and stewardship efforts have resonated with donors and attendees where once again, the Variety message is growing.

Thank you again for all of your support. As a donor, a volunteer, a supporter, a caregiver, a family, a child – there is a special and much needed place in our Variety Family for all of you and we are so glad you are at the table with us!

Page 5: ANY CHILD ANY NEED - Variety Manitobavarietymanitoba.com/wp-content/uploads/...Behavior Analysis is a scientific discipline that applies the principles of learning to bring about meaningful

135 individual grants were awarded for specialized equipment and services to qualifying children through our Special Needs program during the year totaling over $292,000. These numbers represent significant increases over recent years and confirm we are starting to make progress in helping the children and families who need Variety’s assistance.

This year 35% or 47 of all approved individual grants were awarded outside the city of Winnipeg to children in 29 rural communities throughout Manitoba. Access to medical care, specialized equipment and services in many of the communities we serve is non-existent or extremely limited. As a result, our rural families experience greater economic and opportunity disadvantage; often needing our help even more than families living within the city of Winnipeg.

Organizational grants awarded through our Special Needs program continued to flourish and helped 157 children develop communication and social skills through the Music Therapy services Variety funds in 15 schools in Winnipeg and Westman. They also helped 38 children living with special needs in the St. James Assiniboia School Division develop motor skills and independence through our Adaptive Swim programming.

Seeing first-hand or having the opportunity to hear about the amazing progress our Variety children are making because of the life-saving, life-changing, and life-enriching support they receive as a result of our generous community through Variety’s Special Needs program is not only heart-warming, it is our motivation each and every day.

Variety’s Camp Brereton had another successful year serving a record number of campers from 14 deserving groups. Camp continues to be a stable, positive place for underserved children as well as a place where children with disabilities gain

confidence, independence, and life skills. For both types of user groups, Variety’s Camp Brereton is truly a unique environment where kids can just be kids!

The most significant capital improvement at camp this year was making the Leonard Baranyk Dining Hall a climate controlled three season facility. The furnace, air conditioning and duct work were completed prior to the camp season with the remainder of the work to be completed this fall and winter. Completing this project creates a comfortable environment for campers to enjoy their meals and allows groups to utilize this space for activities throughout the entire camp season.

Last but not least, the Variety Children’s Dental Outreach program continued to provide life-changing preventative education, oral assessments and dental treatment “free of charge” to deserving children in 16 schools in the Winnipeg School Division this year. This award-winning program focused on children with economic disadvantage, makes dental care a priority for children; many of whom have never seen a dentist prior to being a part of our program.

Our caring staff, loyal volunteers, and generous donors make our work possible. I am inspired by your passion to help the children we assist and your desire to make a positive difference in their lives. Together we are creating a brighter future, one that is inclusive and encouraging, allowing each Variety child the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The equipment and support needs of young children living with disabilities are extensive and many things remain uncovered or partially covered by government and healthcare programs.

In Manitoba, cochlear implants for a child with hearing loss cost approximately $20,000. Families that qualify are only assisted with 80% of the overall cost, leaving a remaining balance of close to $4,000. Speech therapy is only publicly funded for a child that qualify’ s until age 5. Upon entry to kindergarten schools are responsible for supporting a child who needs access to speech therapy. Unfortunately, resources differ between divisions and

some children receive no speech support. In Manitoba, private speech therapy sessions cost approximately, $110 per hour.

Specialized equipment and services support children to access opportunities, enjoy their rights and actively participate. They are essential in bridging disparities between children with and without disabilities.

Variety’s Special Needs Program continues to see growth in the number of children and their families requiring financial support for life-saving, life-changing and life-enriching equipment and services, not covered by any other source.

VARIETY’S SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM Individual Grants

This year OVER $292,290 in funds were directly awarded to help children living with special needs.

It is estimated that approximately 1 in every 10 children in the world has a disability. Throughout the world people with disabilities have significant unmet needs for support.

Mischa was born prematurely at almost 26 weeks and her eyes were compromised. She needed surgery to prevent blindness when she was just a few months old which lead to the loss of peripheral vision and a central vision problem.

Now in Grade 2, Mischa likes to read a lot but it’s not that easy. Physical books take Mischa a long time to read.

By using an IPad, Mischa can access print material or any material with text and allow her to change text sizes to sizes she can see. The IPad also has built-in accessibility features that optimize the visual display for individuals with low vision. Plus there are apps available that can read texts out loud to Mischa as well as apps that can transcribe what she says.

This is Mischa reading after her gift from Variety’s Special Needs Program.

This is how Mischa sees the world

Nasser was diagnosed with autism & developmental delays in 2016 shortly after his family had been sponsored to come to Canada. Nasser and his family are originally from Syria.

Because Nasser was diagnosed at age 5 and 2 months he was no longer eligible for government funding that would cover speech and ABA therapy.

However, ABA therapy and speech therapy were both recommended to help support Nasser’s development. Applied Behavior Analysis is a scientific discipline that applies the principles of learning to bring about meaningful and positive change in behavior. Speech therapy is an intervention service that focuses on improving a child’s speech and abilities to understand and express language, including nonverbal language.

Through Variety’s Special Needs Program, Nasser and his family have been able to access both therapies and he has made tremendous progress.

“Nasser is a very different child from the one I first met. He is calm, focused, and aware of his environment and the people in it. Nasser actively seeks out his siblings for positive interactions and to have someone to play with. The family can go out together in the community and participate in fun activities such as skating, swimming, and sledding, without fear that Nasser will run away or engage in other forms of concerning behavior.”

“ Nasser understands and follows basic instructions and can now speak over 100 words”.

A new partnership formed this year with the St. James Assiniboia School Division to support children living with special needs. The adaptive swim program provides students with the opportunity to learn the lifelong skills of being safe and comfortable in the water. This program not only teaches children how to swim but allows for increased confidence and self-esteem, improved strength and coordination and the ability to actively participate.

The program consists of weekly swimming lessons with a specialized swim instructor. At the start of the year, a detailed swim assessment is preformed and a program of swimming skills is created for each student. Each week for 1 hour, students head to the St. James Centennial Pool to work on their skills with one-on-one support from their educational assistant.

38 students living with, but not limited to autism, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and seizure disorder were able to participate in the program and improve on critical swimming skills like floating, kicking, breathing under water and more!

STORIES

‘Justin’ has made phenomenal progress in his swimming skills during the course of the 33 week session. He is eager to get into the pool and no longer requires a personal flotation device. He has progressed through using the support of a pool noodle plus physical support from his educational assistant, to using a pool noodle, to swimming unassisted in some activities. Justin now puts his face in the water to blow bubbles. He propels himself through the water on his tummy holding onto a flutter board, for 8 laps, with his arms extended in front of him away from his body.

‘Angel’ exhibits a huge improvement in her confidence and swim abilities since the beginning of the swim session. She now will put her face in the water and bob 10 times. ‘Angel’ floats on her back independently with no flotation assistance at all! She propels herself forward in the water using a flutter board or pool noodle, and kicking. ‘Angel’ shows strong pride in herself when she is in the pool. She encourages other students, and is eager to demonstrate her accomplishments to students and school staff.

For children living with special needs music is seen as the communicative medium that supports engagement and allows children of all abilities to express themselves. Music therapy can create the context for the development of a child’s ability to communicate for both verbal and nonverbal children. Variety partners with certified music therapist to make the benefits of music therapy accessible to more children living with special needs by removing fees associated with participation and having sessions occur within the school setting.

More than 160 children were able to participate in weekly group music therapy sessions from 15 different school sites (13 in Winnipeg and 2 in the Brandon-Westman Region)

Over 2,538 hours of music therapy were funded

VARIETY’S CHILDREN’S DENTAL OUTREACH PROGRAMApproximately, 32% of Canadians have no dental coverage and must pay directly out of pocket or through government-subsidized programs in order to receive care. Children experiencing oral health problems are at risk of sleep loss, poor growth, behavioral problems and poor learning.

For the past 13 years Variety’s Children’s Dental Outreach Program has provided preventative education, dental screenings and free treatment to children who families find themselves in situations of economic disadvantage deciding whether to cover the cost of food, clothing, shelter or their child’s dental-related care.

14 ANNUAL REPORT 2017/2018

THIS YEAR … 2225 children were screened for potential oral health problems.

969 children were identified as needing care.

290 children in need of urgent treatment received care at the University of Manitoba Dentistry Clinic.

16 schools participated in the program.

Since inception in 2005, the program has screened over 30,500 students and treated more than 5,100 children in need of treatment.

Variety’s long standing partnership with the University of Manitoba College of Dentistry, the Winnipeg School Division and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority make this program possible.

“ For many participants this may be their first encounter with dental care. We had a newcomer student from Syria who had previously not seen a dentist or doctor and consequently had significant needs. The family and child expressed their deep gratitude for cost free care through this program.” – Lord Selkirk School Staff Member

“ Ensuring access to care means improvement in outcomes for students who are no longer arriving at school with toothaches.” – Shaughnessy Park School, Principal

VARIETY’S CAMP BRERETONVariety’s Camp Brereton strives to be the premier accessible wilderness camp for children of all abilities that promotes exploration and inclusion, creates lasting friendships, builds self-esteem, independence, leadership, and allows all campers to “just be kids” in a nurturing and encouraging environment.

Variety’s goal is to provide all qualifying, under-privileged, disadvantaged, and children living with a disability in Manitoba an equal opportunity to experience the great outdoors in a safe, fun, inclusive and accessible environment.

THIS YEAR … The Camp season broke records with over 1000 campers spending time at Variety’s Camp Brereton.

93% of campers reported they had an amazing time at camp!

83% of campers said Camp Brereton helped them make new friends.

AND75% of campers felt they were more open to trying new things while at camp.

We continue to make sure children of all abilities have the best time at Camp Brereton. This year we added a new inclusive play structure with the help of Canadian Brewhouse, an HVAC system in our Dining Hall that controls temperature and humidity with the support of the Price Family Foundation, brand new sports equipment from the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Foundation and started to make our camper cabins 3 season ready.

“ I made new friends that have become family. I experienced things I didn’t think I ever would. Thank you for everything you’ve done. You’ve brought so much joy and laughter to my life and I can’t thank you enough.” – Camper, 13

“ I tried new things and I had lots of fun doing it. I got to bike, swim, and go on a canoe trip. Thank you for all the activities and food I had a really good time!” – Camper, 12

“ Everyone was so supportive and I got to spend time away from things in the city and discover new ways to have fun.” – Camper, 14

COMMUNITY EVENTS IN SUPPORT OF VARIETYVariety is grateful to our community for continuing to make a difference in the lives of Manitoban children. With everyone’s support, our 40th anniversary year was one of the best; having received over $62,000 in donations from members of the public who hosted an event or fundraising activity for Variety. Events such as the Original Pancake House’s 60th Anniversary celebration, the Maple Leaf Construction Christmas Party, MacDon Industries Golf Tournament and Chaeban Ice Cream’s Valentines day event all played a major role in raising the bar on community support. Thank You!

VARIETY’S DREAM TEAM!Our work would not be possible without the work of our dedicated volunteers. Volunteers have helped out in many ways; assisting our office staff, providing assistance at our signature and community events, and participating on committees and Board of Directors. This past year alone, 225 dedicated volunteers contributed over 3,388 hours to Variety. This exceeds a savings of almost $45,000 that we were able to use to help more Variety kids!

Because of this invaluable contribution, we’re eager to say a big public
