Welcome to BBC Young Musician 2014

The search for the next BBC Young Musician starts here and will reach its nail-biting conclusion on 18th May 2014 at Usher Hall in Edinburgh, where three finalists will perform full concertos with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Once again, BBC Young Musician will be broadcast on BBC FOUR and Radio 3, and we’re delighted to be taking the final back to Scotland in Commonwealth Games year. 2014 is also the 10th anniversary of Nicola Benedetti's winning performance, and we're incredibly proud to announce that Nicola has agreed to become Ambassador for BBC Young Musician and will return with us to Usher Hall, where she won the title. Nicola has become one of the most successful artists around, with recording contracts, a BRIT Award and an MBE already under her belt. And she’s not the only BBC Young Musician competitor to achieve great things! The first competition might seem like ancient history these days (some of those first competitors in 1978 will no doubt have children too old to enter now), but BBC Young Musician’s reputation for finding superstar musicians was established from the start. In the battle for the 1978 piano category Stephen Hough beat Barry Douglas; fast forward 35 years and Stephen Hough is playing at the First Night of the Proms. Barry Douglas is performing at the Proms too, and so are Alison Balsom, Thomas Adès and Paul Watkins – all were once finalists at BBC Young Musician. The list of starry ex-competitors goes on and on... Tasmin Little, Natalie Clein, Emma Johnson, Michael Collins, Benjamin Grosvenor, Freddy Kempf, Nicholas Daniel and Jennifer Pike. This is a competition that can launch a seriously impressive career.

It won’t be easy: more than 400 young musicians entered the 2012 competition. But you will be heard – everyone who applies and meets the entrance criteria has an audition. For all of us, it’s wonderful to hear so much inspiring music-making, all around the country. It’s also a little like having the chance to look into the future and gauge the health of classical music-making in the UK.

If the 2012 competition was anything to go by, the future of classical music seems assured. It was an amazing night at The Sage Gateshead, when Laura van der Heijden won the 2012 title with her performance of Walton’s Cello Concerto, just edging out fellow finalists Yuanfan

Yang (piano) and Charlotte Barbour-Condini (recorder). According to Laura, BBC Young Musician is pretty special: “every young musician should give it a go, just the experience is worth it.”

Turn to the back of this brochure to find out more about Laura’s BBC Young Musician 2012 journey.

We look forward to welcoming a new wave of talented performers as we start our search for BBC Young Musician 2014.

Good luck!

Young Musician 2012 semifinalists: (l-r) Charlotte Barbour-Condini (recorder), Alexander Kelly (bass trombone), Laura van der Heijden (cello), Yuanfan Yang (piano), Hyun-gi Lee (percussion)

Laura van der Heijden (cello)

Ask Laura van der Heijden to describe her BBC Young Musician experience and she’s pretty direct: “AM. AZ. ING!” Laura had just turned 15 when she won the title with a performance of Walton’s Cello Concerto. “After I finished the Walton I just felt incredible, I utterly enjoyed playing with the Northern Sinfonia and Kirill Karabits, they supported me, lifted me and pushed me to another level. I didn’t really think about how I had actually played, even less whether I would win or not, I just really, really enjoyed myself.”

Things would never be quite the same again for Laura after that extraordinary night at The Sage Gateshead. “BBC Young Musician has changed my life, me as a musician and as a person. Taking part in the competition has encouraged me to become more confident and to take more risks. Immediately after the final I started to have new expectations of myself. I am no longer content with playing that may be good for my age.”

Laura now has several engagements each month and travels around the UK and beyond for lessons and concerts. It’s quite a leap for someone who only entered to see whether all the hard work was worth it. Her aim was just to get through the first audition, but as she progressed through the rounds, things quickly became more serious. “It required effort and commitment, lots of practising, rehearsals, lots of research about the music I played and countless other things. But all the thrilling situations more than made up for it! And I’m very lucky to have had so much support from so many people, and a wonderfully organised mum who managed to juggle everything to make it work.”

According to Laura, BBC Young Musician is an experience worth having, with or without the prize money, the contract with YCAT and the big career boost that the winner enjoys.

“A competition gives very clear goals and the whole process is very exciting! You get to meet new people, experience new situations and focus wholly on music, which is fantastic.” And her advice for those taking part in 2014? “Plan, plan, plan! Even if you think you won’t go far, plan the repertoire you would play in every round, and try to start learning it as soon as possible.”

Laura will return to BBC Young Musician in 2014 to perform with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the final on 18th May.
