“All or nothing.” The story of a remarkable woman of faith A lot of what you find on the Internet could be filed under ‘pure rubbish’ but

every now and then something really worthwhile rises to the top. A friend

recently stumbled on something of a gem of a movie on You Tube. It’s the

story of Sr. Clare Crockett a young Irish religious sister, a native of Derry,

age 34 who died when an earthquake struck Manabi in Ecuador on April 16th

2016. The school in which she worked collapsed killing her and five other

young women who were in the first stages of formation as religious sisters.

Clare had a promising career as an actor but chose instead to offer her life in

God’s service.

Sr. Clare was born on November 14, 1982, in Derry. She entered the Servant Sisters of the

Home of the Mother on August 11, 2001, at

the age of 18. She took her first vows

on February 18, 2006, taking the religious

name of Sr. Clare Maria of the Trinity and the Heart of Mary. She took her

perpetual vows on September 8, 2010. From the moment of her first vows,

she served in the Servant Sisters’ communities in Belmonte, Cuenca (Spain),

Jacksonville, Florida (USA), Valencia (Spain), Guayaquil (Ecuador), and

Playa Prieta, Manabí (Ecuador). She passed away during the earthquake in

Playa Prieta on April 16, 2016.

Sr. Clare had a charismatic quality to her warm and effusive personality and engaged with people in a truly remarkable way, she had a great rapport with

children and young people and is fondly remembered as someone who radiated faith and the joy of the

Gospel. In all her work in many different places she touched lives deeply. With Guitar in hand Clare

brought to music that same infectious enthusiasm that characterised everything she put her hand to as one

Sister said of her “Her way of singing reflected the way she lived.” Sr. Kelly Maria Pezo recalls, “When

she sang, she kept nothing back. And when she lived, she kept nothing back.”

I watched the full video on Clare, called ‘All or nothing’ –

available free on You Tube - and found it a most moving

testimony about an ordinary girl with an extraordinary

love for God. It’s well worth a viewing. In an age of

declining faith, I found it truly inspiring to see such a vibrant vivacious young woman so aflame with conviction

and joy. I would not be at all surprised if one day this

wonderful witness for Christ might enjoy the official

recognition of the Church as a saintly soul.

Driving in the event of a “No-deal” Brexit Brexit and driving in Northern Ireland and the UK On 23 August 2019, UK transport authorities

confirmed that, in the event of a no-deal Brexit,

Irish drivers who wish to visit Northern Ireland

and the UK will not need a Green Card to prove

they are insured. UK-registered vehicles will

need a Green Card if they plan to visit European

Union countries, including Ireland, after a no-

deal Brexit. You can find further information on Brexit and Green Cards from the Motor Insurers’

Bureau of Ireland (MIBI).

Brexit and UK driving licences If you live in Ireland and have a UK driving

licence, your licence will not be recognised here

if there is a no-deal Brexit. You should apply to

convert your UK licence to an Irish licence

before Brexit to ensure that you can continue

driving here if this situation arises. If there is an

agreed Brexit, UK driving licences will continue to be recognised across the EU. The NDLS has a

published a useful FAQ document on Brexit and

driving licences. Find out more about Converting

three best photographs taken since the last

Lucan Drama: Chase Away Those November Blues! Lucan Drama welcome you

to while- away a winter’s

evening at Lucan Spa Hotel

where laughter will warm the

cockles of your heart as you sit and view two, hilarious pieces of theatrical farce.

The first of these hilarious One-Acts is entitled

Shakespeare is a Dick by Mark Kenneally

might happen to you if you were cursed by

Shakespeare to speak only in Shakespearean

verse? This is exactly what happens to Wally in

this modern romp.

In the second One-Act entitled A Little Box Of

Oblivion by Stephen Bean, directed by Carol

Ryan a box placed on a park bench by Woman causes much speculation as people’s imagination

runs riot. These are two unmissable plays to

brighter the darker nights.

Wed 23rd Oct: As we are out on Monday night

we have decided to take this night off.

What a wonderful night we had on Wednesday

night for our International Night on Greece with

Mary O’Hara. She gave us a lovely talk on her

travels through Athens and the Greek Islands.

She had some lovely Greek food and Ouzo to

drink. Mary had decorated the room in the Greek

colours and had some Greek produce, books, postcards, calendars, even a Greek icon. We

were entertained with some Greek music and

singing by Nana Mouskouri. All that was short

was a big fat Greek man!!! Thank you, Mary!

Visit to YCTC August 2019

Lucan Justice and Peace Group held the

Strawberry Breakfast after all Masses on 9th June

during which the parish generously contributed Euro 1,000 for the benefit of our chosen charity

the Youth Community Training Centre in

Livingstone, Zambia.

Sr Josephine Murphy who had helped to set up

the centre in 1999 for the education of vulnerable

youth in skills training, visited Livingstone in

August. YCTC is now run by the Baptistine

Sisters on behalf of the Diocese. New courses of

electrical skills and auto mechanics have been

added and the Centre now has morning,

afternoon and evening classes. The students pay

small fees to cover running costs and teachers salaries. Many students are sponsored. A

considerable number of past students from

YCTC are now employed in hotels, maintenance

departments and other businesses.

To generate extra income to keep the Centre

going, there is a restaurant, block making and

carpentry and tailoring production units The

latest venture is a piggery which is beginning to

thrive. The aim is to increase this facility and the

donation of Euro 1,000 is being used to add more

space. Sr Maureen is specially keen on this and has had experience of rearing pigs in the past.

Woodville Downs Residents Assoc (incl. Esker Lane) Right turn onto N4 proposed closure; BusConnects project were contacted. No

information on why proposal to close this right

turn on Woodies bridge was introduced at this

point. Alternative cycle lane options were

proposed and are included in the latest "emerging

routes" that won't cause closure of access to the

N4 for many. They said public consultation will

take place in November.

Our Residents Association are calling on all to

express their objection to the curtailment of

access to a National route and to the knock-on traffic problems for all those around Lucan,

Ballyowen junction and indeed for those

accessing Liffey Valley due to diverted traffic.

Social/work/school/sport/business and shopping

traffic would be impacted by this proposal. We

are aware some businesses have already

expressed alarm and opposition and we ask for a

strong message of objection to be sent to

BusConnects. There was unanimous objection by

elected representatives when this last proposed in

2017; we hope that this will be the case again.

We will be giving info to our residents to inform them of negative impact and asking that they

submit an objection also.

Big Big Weekend for sport

We’re all

behind the Irish

Rugby team as

they take on the

Not going so well for the Irish Soccer team, a

bit like watching paint dry after the exciting

match between Ireland and Samoa earlier in the

day! After failing to do the business against

Switzerland after that, hopefully they’ll manage

to win their last game against Denmark and

qualify. It would be a shame if they don’t qualify

considering some of the matches will be played

in the Aviva next year.

Here’s hoping to better days ahead!

Great Excitement in Lucan Sarsfields last

Saturday as Darren Gavin and Sam came to see

all the boys and girls!

Tom and Liam, with twins Tadhg and Seán

enjoyed meeting Sam!

Heard great reports about SOL’s talk by

Lucan CC Boys Soccer in 7 heaven: Lucan

secured a place in the 2nd round of the Leinster

Boys Senior Cup with a comprehensive 7-1 win

against near neighbours Collinstown CC. The

result was never in doubt as Lucan led 5-0 at half

time with a supremely confident display of graft,

guile and teamwork. Collinstown rallied in the

2nd half as Lucan eased off the gas and they got a

consolation goal 10 minutes from time to make it 5-1, Lucan caught the visitors on the break to

score a further 2 goals to round off a fantastic 7-1

victory. Lucan CC 7-1 Collinstown CC. Conor

Finn played a captains role by scoring a classy

hat trick and was ably assisted by Ryan Flynn (2

goals) David Akinwale (1 goal) and Robert

Dragusin (1 goal).

Badminton silver while representing Ireland

for Lucan CC student: Another huge

congratulations must go to Tara Phelan in 5th

year. Tara’s latest fantastic achievement came

last week during a Graded International event

between Ireland, England, Scotland & Wales hosted here in Ireland. This event was launched

in line with the 120th Anniversary of Badminton

Ireland and the four federations came together to

celebrate this at the National Indoor Arena in

Dublin. Tara was selected to play for Ireland

following on from her National Title wins earlier

this year and was part of the National Grade E

Team. The team competed to a very high

standard and secured the silver medal having

beaten Wales and Scotland to some very tight

matches. Well done Tara, we wish you further

success as you continue on your badminton

journey!

Students enjoy some Play time! A group of our

6th year students had the opportunity to enjoy a live production of An Triail, by Máiréad Ní

Ghráda, in the Axis Theatre in Ballymun. The

play features as part of their Leaving Certificate

Irish studies. The play, heralded as a modern

Irish classic, was being performed by the Fíbín

theatre group who use puppets, masks, engaging

visuals and physical performances to appeal

particularly to a younger audience by making it

current and more accessible. Thank you to our

teacher Miss Barbour for organising the event.

Coláiste Phádraig CBS Talent Show: Coláiste Phádraig’s Lucan’s Got

Talent 2019 was held this year on Friday,

October 11th. As always there was great

excitement and a great atmosphere around the

school on the day of the show as one of the most

eagerly awaited school events of the year edged ever closer. Work got underway early on in the

day with TY students helping to set up the venue,

the sound system and mentor the nervous acts

who would later all take to the stage. Over 250

students reluctantly left their afternoon classes to

attend this year’s Show. Fair play to them all for

sacrificing important academic work and

homework in order to be in attendance for

90mins of music, dance, magic, fun and

entertainment!

The show was hosted by the very competent

Sultan Mamaev and Alex Jaji. Fifteen acts

competed in this year’s show. There were an

impressive range of talents displayed from

singing, dancing, guitar and trombone playing to rapping, origami story-telling, pronouncing

impressively long words and magic. The range of

talents and skills on show in the final was hugely

impressive and the audience were extremely

taken with a number of the acts in particular.

However, it was down to the judges Ms. Ryan,

Mr. McDonald, Ms. Cooney, Oisín Kehoe and

Seán Foley to select the winners and after a hard

fought battle, Nico De Leon musical skills won

out in the end after his crowd pleasing rendition

of Ariana Grande’s Breathin’. The talented Lucca Sullivan came in second

place when he showcased his highly proficient

singing and banjo skills performing From Here

to Utopia by Ramshackle Glory.

3rd place went to the hardworking band

consisting of brothers Kieran and Nathan Cahill,

and Conor Henson. They sang a medley of

popular hits Hotel California, American Pie,

Seven Nation Army and Twist and Shout and they

had the crowd singing and dancing in unison

with them throughout!

Well done to all who competed in the final and had the bravery to stand and perform in front of

250 of their peers. The audience must also be

commended for being extremely supportive and

encouraging throughout the show. A big thank

you to the TY students who helped Ms. Bonner

organise and run the show to a high standard. It

was a wonderful occasion for the school and

€550 was also raised for the Zambia Immersion

Project 2020. Well done to Ms. Bonner on yet

again putting in so much hard work and time into this year’s Talent Show. Without her drive,

energy and patience, the Talent Show would not

be the success it invariably is. Until next

year………….

Awards: Well done to 2nd yr Matthew White

who won the Mark O’ Neill Student of the

Month Award for September in recognition of

his impeccable manners, positive attitude and

hard work in all of his classes. Matthew as also

made a great impression on parents during the

Open Night with his charm, sense of humour and

helpfulness. Comhghairdeas freisin le Cillian

Hurling: Our u14 hurlers travelled to

Abbotstown last Wednesday to take part in a

hurling blitz. They played two matches in total,

winning one and losing the other. A comfortable

victory against Gaelcholáiste Reachrann saw the

team hurl beautifully throughout with numerous

impressive performances from our talented

young hurlers. St. Paul’s Raheny provided

sterner opposition in their next match which

proved to be high quality encounter. The Raheny team eventually prevailed on a score-line of 3-05

to 1-02 but our team showed enough promise to

suggest a competitive campaign is in prospect for

the upcoming season.

Golf: The school’s golf team had its 1st outing in

the Interschool’s Matchplay tournament last

Thursday where we squared off against St.

Vincent’s, Castleknock. Representing the school

were 5th yrs Seán Quigley and Ciaran O’ Brien,

who formed one partnership, while 6th yr Daniel

O’ Connor and TY James formed a second

pairing. Even though it was technically an away

game for the school, the students found

themselves in the familiar grounds of Hermitage Golf Club so they were optimistic that the

opposition’s “home advantage” would be

somewhat diminished. However, that was not to

be the case as Vincent’s came out firing and

never relented for a single holw. Despite some

impressive dove-tailing from our golfers, they

couldn’t match the impressive driving and short

game of their opponents who ran out comfortable

winners in the end.

Story ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is not a real wizard but

Oz by using screens and shadows and all sorts of

trickery to make him seem like a ‘Powerful

Wizard’. In this unique workshop ‘Shadows of

Oz’, theatre artist Margaret Callan Bergin from

Garbo Productions will take the children on a

journey just like Dorothy's to visit the Wizard, exploring the use of shadow play for all sorts of

creative ‘trickery’. The workshop starts with

Margaret exploring the story of the Wizard

through a pop-up version of the book. The

Children will then draw characters or a piece of

scenery, and make their own shadow puppet.

They will also create life-size shadows on a

bigger screen. They will then practice using the

puppets on the screen. Margaret will help them

rehearse to her recorded narrative and by the end

they will recreate a famous scene in shadows

Dublin Bus: I am meeting Dublin Bus

management this week to highlight the need for

more capacity on our bus routes in Lucan. Too

many commuters are disadvantaged because of

the location of their bus stop on the route they

use – we need more buses at peak departure

times.

Briar cutting: I was delighted to see that briars

in Foxborough and Glenvale which were

obstructing footpaths were cut back last week following representations by me. I am following

up on the need for briars to be cut back in other

estates.

Local Policing: It was wonderful to see such an

engaged and energetic attendance at last week’s

Local Policing Forum. It’s clear that there are

many challenges in our area, and I called for

these public forums to be held more frequently to

involve the community more in local policing.

Youth Services: We have one of the largest

youth populations in Europe and a lack of

services and facilities for our young people. This

means youth are left with nothing to do and

nowhere to go. As the population continues to

grow services will be needed more than ever. We need increased funding for the Lucan youth

service to cover Adamstown and purpose built

facilities for young people to socialise.

Cllr Madeleine Johansson had a motion passed in

the council requesting more funding for youth

services in Lucan from the Minister for children.

And Gino Kenny TD has raised it in the Dail on

several occasions.

We are now asking residents to contact the

Minister directly to demand increased funding

and facilities for young people. She can be emailed at [email protected]

By-Election: I am delighted to have been

selected by the Dublin Mid-West branch of the

Social Democrats to contest the upcoming by-

election in Dublin Mid-West. We have a

dynamic bunch of people from across the constituency who are out meeting people and

working together with our neighbours to try and

deliver an optimistic and dynamic politics for the

people of Dublin Mid-West. Our campaign will

focus on what actually matters in people’s lives!

Autism & Disability Services: On Thursday

night, Oct 24th in the Bawnogue Community

Centre, I will host a meeting which will have presentations from the CEO of AsIAm, Ireland’s

National Autism Charity and Senator John

Dolan, a disability rights activist and member of

the disability community. We’ll have plenty of

time for a Q&A so people can interact on the

issues facing them. The meeting will run from

7:30 – 9pm and all are welcome.

John Curran T.D. – Fianna Fáil Email: [email protected] Phone: 01 6183792.

Curran urges early vaccination as bad flu

season predicted: With experts predicting a

particularly bad flu season this year, I am

advising people to get their flu vaccine early.

People in at-risk categories are strongly advised

to avail of the vaccine and anyone in the at-risk

groups who hold a medical card can get the

vaccine free of charge at their local pharmacy.

Lucan Primary Care Centre: After following

up with the Health Minister in relation to

progress on the delivery of a Lucan Primary

Health Care Centre. He has informed me that a

preferred provider will be selected in Q1 2020. I continue to follow up on the much needed Lucan

Primary Health Care Centre

Cllr. Paul Gogarty – Independent and Green-minded. “Not just at election time”

Tel: 087-2752489. Email: [email protected]

Bus service: The 25A bus services continues to

be hit and miss with huge queues at certain times

of the day both in the city centre and elsewhere.

While I welcome one extra 25 service in morning

and afternoon the existing service needs a rejig,

whatever about Bus Connects. Cllr Tuffy

suggested all Councillors meet Dublin Bus

together and I support this; meeting due on

Tuesday week. Bins and money back beverages: Have raised

the need for more bins in Hermitage Park and

bins near the entrance to Ballyowen Park

(Balgaddy) as well as elsewhere. Meanwhile the Government, enamoured as it is with the

industry-led REPAK scheme, refuses to

reintroduce a refundable deposit scheme. Money

back bottles and cans would reduce 50% of

visible litter overnight.

Celbridge Road (Weston) Tree damage:

Have raised this with SDCC.

Assessment Of Needs CHO 7: CH0 7

(Community Health Care Organisations) which

includes Lucan are the worst affected areas in the

country for assessment of needs competition.

The assessment of needs is a legally bound directive that gives a six month period of

assessment (Disability Act 2005) for a diagnosis

and intervention for a child with special needs.

These needs could be access to speech and

language therapy and other important

interventions. In a response to a parliamentary

question I submitted CHO 7 which includes

Clondalkin, Ballyfermot, Tallaght and Lucan

showed there were major delays in treatments. In

some cases parents have to wait for years for

intervention for their children.

25 Years Young: On the 10th October our

County celebrated 25 years. The affair itself was

very low key and for me absence in 1991of the

public was a huge disappointment. Our own

Mayor Casserly did a lovely job. I was first

elected to Dublin County Council and to the

Belgard Committee from which was to emerge

from the New County. However, the next 3

years were to witness many marathon and

controversial meetings making the County

Development Plan. So, on January 1, 1994 the

New County came into being and, glad to say, a

new era began with much more responsible, if

not yet perfect, planning. Some of us wanted to

mark our heritage by naming it Esker, or Moy

Life. We lost. The fastest growth rate has been

Lucan, the Lucan Esker area alone gone from

3,099 in 1991 to 29,820 today, over 800%.

Much has been achieved, but we are only

beginning!

Transport Users

Overloading on rail and Luas is

a major issue during peak

times. The main issue is lack of

carriages, most of these trains can have eight

carriages. Dart is the only mode of transport that has eight. Mainline rail in some cases, they have

as little as four carriages. The success of the

Phoenix Tunnel is other example where there is

need for more carriages on each train due to the

demand. Instead of investing in carriages

Authority tried to block the reopening of this

tunnel. I have asked the same authority for over

ten years to invest in extra train carriages, as

there is a waiting time of over five years to get

new carriages. They keep saying there is no

money, yet they have money for everything else

and are always promoting very costly projects Metro Link and bus Connects that are years away

if ever. The main cause of this overloading is the

Radial System all via the centre. They still refuse

to look at a solution to this problem.
