“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the
Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.” – Jn. 15:26
Discerning the Voice and Work
of the Holy Spirit – Part 2
How do I discern the voice and work of the Holy Spirit?
How can I distinguish between right and wrong?
What is the voice of God and what is the voice of the enemy?
Outline
I. Character of God’s kingdom versus Satan’s
II. Voice of the Holy Spirit vs. the voice of Satan
III. Precautions against deception
IV. Guidelines for knowing the will of God in a particular
situation
HOW CAN I RECOGNIZE THE
VOICE OF THE HOLY SPRIT?
1. He whispers
• He does not shout or
threaten us to yield to
His voice
2. He seeks our cooperation
• Prefers to appeal rather than
command
• “Therefore, though I might
be very bold in Christ to
command you what is fitting,
yet for love's sake I rather
appeal to you…” (Phil. 8-9)
2. He seeks our cooperation
• Satan wants to enslave us
• “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute
spirit. And wherever it seizes him, it throws him
down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth,
and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that
they should cast it out, but they could not…Then
they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him,
immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on
the ground and wallowed, foaming at the
mouth…And often he has thrown him both into the
fire and into the water to destroy him.”
(Mk. 9:17-18, 20,22)
3. He convinces mankind of sin
• “And when He has come, He
will convict the world of sin,
and of righteousness, and of
judgment.” (Jn. 16:8)
• “…the accuser of our
brethren, who accused them
before our God day and
night, has been cast down.”
(Rev. 12:10)
4. He is clear in His rebuke
• He is specific in His
rebuke
• Confession of vague sins
is never liberating
5. He corresponds with
Scripture and God’s character
• “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send
in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your
remembrance all things that I said to you.” (Jn. 14:26)
• “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one
condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said
to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”
(Jn. 8:10-11)
6. He shows believers their true
value
• “Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And
not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very
hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear
therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
(Lk. 12:6-7)
• “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and
that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the
temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of
God is holy, which temple you are.” (1 Cor. 3:16-17)
7. He show believers there is
absolution for sins
