Dear Families:
It is hard to believe we are at the end of Octo-
ber. Where did the month go? Cross Country
has wrapped up another amazing season. Con-
gratulations to all the runners who made it to
the practices and/or meets. It was great seeing
all of you out. Thank you to Mrs. Woolley and
Mrs. Sinclair for coaching the team. You did a
great job of representing Lakeview this year.
Thank you to the parents who drove the kids to
and from the meets this year!
As soon as the last race was finished, Volleyball
season began. Our grade six and seven students
have begun practicing and have started their
seasons. Thank you to Ms. Benson and Ms.
Keirstead for coaching the boys’ team and Ms.
Chung and Ms. Knapp for coaching the girls’
team. I know they will be great representatives
for the school. Our grade three, four and five
students are also getting a taste of volleyball on
Wednesday’s at lunch through an intramural
program. We have about eighty kids participat-
ing in the noon hour volleyball.
We had our first “short run” Earthquake Drill
on Thursday, October 20th. The purpose of the
drill is to acquaint all staff and students of the
procedures in the event of an earthquake. We
were very pleased with the drill and feel that
each time we rehearse the procedures we are
better prepared.
The Halloween assembly will be on Tuesday
October 31st at 1:15 pm. We are starting it
shortly after lunch to allow students to partici-
pate in a variety of classroom activities for the
remainder of the day. Parents are welcome to
come see all the ghosts, ghouls and super-
heroes in the school in the afternoon and are
encouraged to dress up for the assembly. Stu-
dents will be allowed to change into their cos-
tumes at lunch for Halloween. If the weather is
good, students will be going outside at recess
and lunch, so make sure they have a jacket/
footwear with them that will fit over their cos-
tumes.
Please be advised that students will not be al-
lowed to wear face masks of any type, bloody
or violent looking costumes or bringing
weapons that are part of their costumes.
Some students frighten easily and we want
them to enjoy the day at school as well.
Please check with your son/daughters teacher
or Mr. Cornell at the office if you have con-
cerns whether their costume is appropriate or
not. If costumes are not appropriate, they
will be asked to take them off.
Ms, Bourne is looking for any candy boxes
you may have from your Halloween treats.
They can be dropped off to the music room
for her. She will be using the boxes as part of
the back drop for our Spring Play this year.
She is not looking for the individual candy
boxes, but the big boxes the individual candy
comes in. Thank you in advance for bringing
in any boxes you have!
We are in the process of transitioning over to
a new email system to replace our current
Listserv. Please watch for an email on Friday
from the new system outlining the changes.
The hope is we will not have any blacklisting
happening from this system as it is not tied to
our school district emails that are currently
being blacklisted. Please be aware that in
spite of our best efforts we are still experienc-
ing blacklisting on both outgoing and incom-
ing email. If you have emailed a teacher or
the office and have not heard back, please call
the school, the messages may not be getting
through on either end of the conversation.
We hope with time our SD41 email accounts
will not be blacklisted so we can resume nor-
mal communication with parents using it.
Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be on
Thursday November 9th at 10:45. Parents and
families are welcome to attend.
Have fun and be safe this Halloween,
Bruce Cornell

Halloween Costumes at School
All students are encouraged to wear costumes in the af-ternoon only on October 31. No replicas of weapons and no masks please. Students are encouraged to go home for lunch this day if they need assistance to put on their costume.
The school will often have students ab-
sent for an extended period of time dur-
ing regular school days for extended holi-
day trips. The common question teachers
get asked is, “Can you please send home
work that my child will miss so they
don’t get too far behind?” Before I an-
swer this question, let me start by asking
you a few questions to think about: Do
you believe it is important for teachers to
adjust their daily lesson plans and instruc-
tions based on whether your child under-
stands the concepts? Can this be done
while on vacation?
Is it possible to predict what lesson num-
ber a teacher will be at in 5 days or 14
days time? Will there be teachable mo-
ments that strengthen and reinforce con-
cepts that don’t come from a textbook
that teachers and students can offer each
other in the classroom?
In most cases, when students are absent
from school for more than a few days
due to a family holiday, it is very chal-
lenging for teachers to provide school
work for students that will offer good
learning intentions. In addition, teach-
ers provide continual feedback (written
or oral) on student work so they can
improve their learning (i.e. assessment
for learning). It is important to know if
you are planning a vacation during
school time, and are worried about
missed work/concepts, perhaps plan-
ning a vacation during school days is
not recommended. It is not the expec-
tation of the teachers to provide school
work for students going away for an
extended holiday. In some cases, going
on vacation and learning about the
areas in which you are traveling is a
tremendous learning experience itself.

School Information
If your our child arrives late:
It is expected that Lakeview students will arrive
on time. If a child is late (that is, arrives after
the bell has gone), he/she must report to the
office before proceeding to his/her classroom.
We have a sign-in binder on the front counter.
If your child will be late or absent, please call
the school at 604-664-8735 to report the students name and
division number.
Just a reminder that Lakeview is a
“Nut/Peanut Aware School.”
What does this mean? It means that
we have many students in our school who have severe
allergies to peanuts and nuts. The severity of nut al-
lergies could result in death. When packing snacks
and lunches for your child, we are encouraging you
not to pack nut/peanut laced foods. Please join me in
keeping our students safe. If you have concerns,
please notify the school. For more information on
nut/peanut awareness please visit:

CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
Lakeview enjoyed another fabulous year on the Cross Country trail! We had a consistent group of 30 students who showed true
commitment to the team and a desire to improve their running skill. Mrs. Woolley and Ms. Sinclair are very proud of the accom-
plishments of all the members of the team.
Ryden Evers finished his elementary school cross country performance with a very determined first place finish in the extremely
difficult grade seven boys division. It was a true pleasure to watch this young athlete develop into an accomplished runner. The
grade seven girls performed very well with strong finishes from Mina, Shiana, Sam, Hailey and Rachelle. Rachelle’s little brother
was a keen supporter of our Cross Country team!!!
We have a very tight-knit group of grade six girls who made a very strong finish in their division. Alisse, Akaash, Aikum and
Sonia showed great teamwork and comradery. The grade six boys were very well represented by Omar and Jacob.
The grade fives showed some very good running skills in both the boys and girls division. Zeru, Robel, Naod, Shavic and Zahan
really did a very honourable job representing Lakeview. The grade five girls were very well represented by Jayda, Priya, Katie,
and Anjelena.
Our first time competitors, the grade four boys and girls, did an amazing job for Lakeview! Tyler finished third in the very com-
petitive grade four boys, while Emerald, who was our solo grade four girl, came in fourth! We have some great potential from
Alen, Bhima, Joshua and Rais for our track team in March!
Our athletes should be very proud of their performances at the Awards Meet on Tuesday, Oct. 10 th. Lakeview athletes continue to
have a presence in whatever athletic endeavour they choose to set their sights on. We are very proud of the integrity and sports-
manship of Lakeview athletes! Well done team!
Cross Country team members include: Rais, Tyler, Joshua, Alen, Bhima, Emerald, Kayden, Naod, Zeru, Shavic, Zahan, Robel,
Jayda, Priya, Katies, Anjelena, Omar, Jacob, Alisse, Akaash, Aikum, Sonia, Ryden, Chayton, Jaycee, Mina, Shiana, Sam, Hailey
