The 2016 Summer Olympics are drawing near. For many athletes, it is the moment they have been waiting and practicing for. There are 10,500 athletes from 206 countries that will compete in the Olympic games. This year, for the first time, it will be held in South America’s beautiful and extremely popular Brazilian city of Rio de Ja-neiro. The events will take place from the 5th to the 21st of August. During these 17 days, there will be a total of 306 medal events. The women’s portion of the games consist of 136 medal events. The men’s portion of the games will consist of 161 medal events. There will be 9 medal events for the mixed (men and women) events. In Rio de Ja-neiro, 32 competition venues will be spread across 4 regions of the city and 42 events will be contested. The regions are Deodoro, Barra, Maracana, and Co-pacabana.
People have been testing how the Olympics will run since May of 2014 and will continue to work on it until August of 2016. There will be a supply of 7.5 million tickets given out and about 3.8 million of them will be under 30 U.S. dollars. This year’s Olympics have 2 additional sports, which include golf (which has returned to the games after 112 years) and rugby (which has re-turned to the games after 92 years). According to historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. The games were then suspended in 392 AD. They were dedi-cated to the Olympian Gods and were staged on the ancient plains of Olympia. The 1896 Summer Olympics, officially known as the games of the 1 Olympiad, was a multi-sport event held in Athens, Greece, from April 6th through the 15th of 1896. It was the first international Olympic Games held in the modern era. Will you be watching the 28th Summer Olympics this year?

There are many sports available in the town of Secaucus. Basketball and Softball are two of the most popular sports played in town. The basketball season included many games. In the playoffs, “La Mia Cucina” and “Blimpie” versed each other. In this nail biting game, “La Mia Cucina” won. They went on to play in the championship game, where they played against “Georgie’s”. Unfortunately, they lost by four points. However, they worked as a team and tried their hardest.
The Softball season has also been in full swing. Opening Day for Softball was a great success. All the teams of Secaucus attended and were introduced on home field at Buchmuller Park. Since the start of the season, many teams have won and lost games. Regardless of the outcome, they have always put forth their best effort and sportsmanship.
There are two levels provided in softball depending on which one you would like to tryout for, All Stars and Travel. They are both amazing levels that will help you learn more and more as you go along. All Stars is a more experienced level where you have many more games and is a little harder than Travel. Travel is easier but you have less games. You still have plenty of games but it is more for people who want to learn more before going on to the more experienced level All Stars. Many more people should join because it gets you moving and active throughout the warm season.

Fashion News
By Sophia Benavente & Alison Rizzo
The Row is an American Fashion Design House founded by twin sisters, Ashley and Mary Kate Ol-
sen. Collection head designer, Francesco Fucci, wel-comed Huber Street School Newspaper Club into their NYC designer headquarters. Mr. Fucci explained how
the true meaning of fashion is wearing classic and time-less pieces, that offer comfort and elegance in ready to
wear clothing that fits right into a young lady’s ward-robe. He emphasized that even though fashion is an
integral part of a girl’s personality, it does not play a pre-dominant role in the success of a student. From the
1700’s to the 1900’s, there was real craftsmanship and dedication in every garment made, but in our modern
day with the internet and social media, mass production has become the rule. Their latest Spring 16 collection is inspired in the fifties and how historical events like the
post World War II era influenced fashion, giving it a sense of worth and nostalgia.

The Secaucus Board of Education along with the Town of Secaucus are teaming up and providing an after school program for Secaucus children grades 1 through 5. The individual classes take place once a week and last for 8 weeks. They start at 3:00 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. The emphasis is to promote and engage students in art, technology, science, physical educa-tion, math and world language. One program is run by ACCEL Learning where students design codes for games. Another activity is Lit Art Learning, where students learn different techniques in art and make their own magnificent masterpieces. There is also Sparks Physical Education, where stu-dents engage in fun games while exer-cising. Maybe you would like to sign up for one of these educational, yet fun classes next year.

The sixth grade classes of Mrs. Hernandez and Mr. Bonin were
required to create a product or company that would benefit the
consumer. They had to come up with new products, solutions,
and eco-friendly ways to live life. This project began in October and continued until
March.
Shark Tank is an actual television show where entrepreneurs present their new prod-
ucts. On the show, there are five famous business people who listen to the entrepreneur
present their ideas. If one of business people like the product, they give the entrepreneur
money towards marketing their business and a share of their company.
In the sixth grade version, groups presented their ideas with some information and a
model. About six business people from Secaucus gathered to hear the presentations. The
goal of the project was to see if the “sharks” liked the model and were willing to buy
into it.
The products presented included: perfume clothing, a smoothie blender that peels
your fruits or vegetables, a water saver, a car mattress, color changing shoes, just to
name a few. The ‘sharks’ were very impressed by the presentations and talent of these
young individuals.
