It is no surprise to you that one of my deepest life passions centers on the children and youth of our world. This summer I celebrate my 33rd year of working in the church. It began after my freshman year of college, when I spent the next summer working in my home church, mostly with children and youth, and throughout the ensuing years I have always found a way to be connected to the rising generations. Of the many important ways Mount Vernon Church is in ministry, I am thrilled to see the way we care about all age levels, and especially our younger ones. On weekdays as I walk through the fellowship hall to my study, I rejoice in the young voices I hear emanating from Children’s House. On Wednesday evenings I delight in the energy created by all generations gathering together, and especially in the enthusiasm of our families with kids. On Sunday mornings I love to look out and see all generations represented, from the youngest of families to the most senior of couples and singles. I am blessed to minister with you in a place that cares for people of all stages in the human life continuum. It is evident to me that Mount Vernon UMC has a strong legacy and current reality of loving children and youth, their families, and their friends. Mount Vernon UMC does a great job in creating a loving, nurturing environ-ment for those connected to our congregation! One of the questions I have been prayerfully considering for the past six months is: how can we be intentional about connecting with others who need what we offer, and especially how can we leverage our resources to further nurture hope in the Dan River region?

Fostering Hope One opportunity Claudia and I are excited about is called “Foster Hope,” a ministry that encourages foster and adoptive parents in their journey with the most vulnerable kids in our community. On August 17 at 6:00 we are hosting a potluck dinner and information session which will describe how each part of our church community can have a part in supporting and encouraging families throughout our region who respond to God’s invitation to foster and/or adopt children. We invite you to meet with us to learn more … with no obligation on your part except to learn and ask questions. EVERY person in the church can play a role – so please come to find out what yours might be. Mount Vernon Church is a hope-filled place engaged in meaningful ministry… what will it mean for us to take another step in fostering hope in our region? Filled with hopeful anticipation, Pastor Bart

Church Picnic at Ballou ParkSunday, September 11

Let’s Rise Out of the Summer SlumpPlease be aware that during the summer months, contri-butions to the general operating fund of the church have fallen significantly short of what we need to meet our ongoing expenses for personnel, utilities, and general operating expenses. We ask that you review your giving pattern during the summer months, and if you need to make adjustments, please bring your contributions up to schedule. We have had to transfer funds from the Founda-tion to enable us to meet August expenses. It is urgent that we address the shortfall now and get our financial house in order. Things are going so well in so many aspects of the church’s program that we simply cannot afford to let our financial commitments fall behind. Thanks to all of our congregation for your gifts to Mount Vernon, and we are confident that we will correct the current problem that our church faces. A little extra giving from each of us will bring us back to a state of financial health. – The Finance Committee

Tote Bags from BurundiAs many of you know, our daughter, Catherine, lives and works in one of the poorest countries in the world, Burundi. She works for UNICEF, and across the street from her office is a women’s handcraft cooperative called Amahoro Handcrafts Burundi. “Amahoro” means “peace.” In a country at war, this is especially meaningful. I fell in love with the tote bag Catherine brought me and asked her to bring home as many as she could fit in her luggage. She brought 15 bags, each lined and beautifully made. Purchase of these bags directly benefits women in Burundi. Search “Amahoro Hand-crafts Burundi” online for more information about the organization. Please stop by my office if you would like to purchase a bag. Cost is $30.00 per bag. On the website they are listed as “multi-strip tote” and “overnighter travel tote.” All proceeds go directly to women in Burundi. – Beth Bauman

Mount Vernon UMC Foundation News…Because of the generosity and foresight of current and past members, the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Foundation has been able to impact the lives of many students and programs in our community for over thirty years. 2016 has been no exception. With assets of almost $1.2 million as of December 31, 2015, held in the trust, the board has approved distributions of $37,000 during 2016. It is important for Mount Vernon members to note that according to the terms of the trust only income earned on the assets is to be distributed during the year. During 2016, scholarships of $4,250 were approved, including both college and Children’s House scholarships. Other recipients included Children’s House, for the purchase of new curriculum, and the Samaritan Fund of the Virginia United Methodist Homes. The Foundation has continued to support the ministries of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Distributions, totaling $11,000, have been made to the special funds for music, missions, and children’s & youth ministries, which will enable staff to enhance our worship and programming opportunities. Additionally, $15,000 will be distributed this month from the Dorothy Rich Fund for church operations. I hope that this report highlights the Foundation’s vital role and partnership with Mount Vernon Church in carrying out the mission of the church. I am certain it is the hope of all that Mount Vernon United Methodist Church will continue to a make a difference in our community forever. If you would like to help sustain and increase the principal funds of the Foundation trust, please consider donating to the Foundation today or include it in your estate plans.

Our Crossroads team of 25 youth and adults traveled to Marion, Virginia, July 15-–22 for the group’s 15th annual summer mission trip. They did various

construction projects and brought joy and hope to five families!

The team will lead worship on August 21 and looks forward to sharing from the trip in word,

song, and photos.

Thank you for the cards, food, phone calls, emails and the love, care, support and prayers from our Mount Vernon family during Jerry’s treatments that ended May 25th and now recovery. We will know the success of the treatments in a few months but continue to receive positive remarks from all the doctors. We cannot imagine anyone going through this experience without a church family and we feel we are a part of the BEST! Jerry and Mary Franks
