DIVREI HARAV: WORDS FROM RABBI COHEN

In one of my very fi rst sermons at Beth Israel Congregation, over nine years ago, I wrote this:

Jewish music creates moments of communication with God. Music is prayer. I always feel like the musical notes and the passion behind them fl oat up to God much like the incense and sacrifi cial scents did in ancient Judaism. Music can also inspire us to talk to God – to fi nd the right words or abstract feelings that we are trying to convey in our prayers.

One of the attributes that attracted me most to Beth Israel as a young rabbi was this congregation’s dedication to music. Now, as your middle-aged rabbi, I continue to be touched by our congregation’s music. We have a volunteer choir that rivals larger congregations in its beauty, we have had numerous soloists who sing with their souls as well as their voices, and the music that rises from our bima inspires and lifts our community.

Early this summer, Josh Wiener, who has volunteered countless hours as our Shirim Choir Director, decided to take a break from that capacity. After 15 years of dedicated service to music at Beth Israel (and he does much more than music here!), he needed some time to focus on other priorities. I applaud Josh for knowing when to step back; not all of us are so self-aware. Yet it is a great loss for the congregation. Josh shared his incredible talent with us without any expectation of personal return beyond a “thank-you.”

The history of our congregation shows how important music is in our worship, our holiday celebration, our Jewish expression in general. With this in mind, we knew that the High Holidays would not be the same without the Shirim Choir on Rosh Hashana morning and Kol Nidre. The board has agreed to ensure the Choir’s role for these holidays, we have hired an Interim Music Director and accompanist to make this happen.

As we move forward, we need the congregation’s help. On September 9th at our Semi-Annual Meeting, we will decide whether or not we can continue to support the expense of the Shirim Choir. Please come to the meeting and confi rm that the history of our congregation is its present and its future: that music remains a priority, that the Shirim Choir moves not only the volunteers who sing but also all who experience their joy and their music.

Voting at congregational meetings:

At past annual and semi-annual meetings, the use of proxy voting has been discussed and/or possibly utilized. The Board of Trustees chose to review the Constitution and General Policies currently in use regarding the practice of proxy voting, and has determined that our congregational constitution and general policies do not discuss the practice other than allowing the second vote for each family unit. Therefore, barring an amendment to the constitution or creation of a policy regarding proxies, no proxy voting will be allowed at our congregational meetings. As always, your attendance at these

meetings is highly encouraged.

As members of Beth Israel Congregation, we are people who, of our own free will, have joined together to maintain a Jewish institution as a house of worship, a house of learning and a house of assembly. It is a social as well as religious meeting place for us. We all have a stake in maintaining our Temple as a place in which Judaism is fostered and maintained. Our Temple is not a membership organization; it is a congregational home. While we’ve previously called our fi nancial commitment to BIC “dues”, we must get away from that concept – we’re not a health club or country club. It’s time to realize that we are making an annual commitment, a gift of our hearts and minds, to support the mission, vision, and goals of BIC. Those who came before us preserved our Jewish heritage for us. Our obligation is to do the same for future generations of our community. The time has come for those of us who love this congregation, those of us who depend on it, and yes, even those who only occasionally use it to realize our Congregation’s needs and provide for them. In Deuteronomy 16:17, we fi nd the words: “Every man shall give as he is able according to the blessing of Adonai, Thy God, which Adonai has given thee.” This biblical concept of giving as much as we’re capable of is the culture we need to embrace. What have been the barriers to achieving the needed support from all our congregants? Many excuses have been heard: “I don’t use the Temple very much”, “I only come three days a year”, “Others don’t pay their Fair Share”, “I only want to be buried there”, or, “I should pay less because I don’t have children in the Religious School”. My response to these comments is that Temple membership is not a fee for services rendered but rather a means of supporting a community. As responsible Jews, we are required to fulfi ll the Mitzvah of Tzedakah for our congregation even if we do not choose or use its programs. The fact remains that regardless of how often we participate in Temple activities, the average cost per family of operating our congregation is around $150 per month/$1800 per year. This doesn’t include expenses that arise outside of the budget such as capital maintenance and improvement for which it is impossible to budget. By insuring the future of our congregation through adequate fi nancial support, we are doing our utmost to protect our Jewish future and that of our children, as well as of generations to come.

Rebecca Laskin, BIC Board President

L’shana Tova,

As we begin the Jewish New Year, I would like Beth Israel Sisterhood to have a new vision for the upcoming year. With our newly elected Board Members, we have prepared a great line up of new and exciting events and it is only with your continued help and participation that these events and programs continue to grow more successful each year. Some of the new events we have planned are a cooking demonstration, mitzvah day with a musical recital, interfaith dinner, and a special havdallah service with a family picnic. I would encourage everyone who has not been part of sisterhood to become a member and for all our current members to continue to participate in our future events. We are consistently looking for new and fresh ideas to attract new members so please keep the lines of communication open and let us hear from you. May you be blessed for a happy and healthy new year. Charna Schlakman, President Beth Israel Sisterhood

In just over two months, over a hundred high school teens from across the deep-south will come together in Jackson for NFTY-Southern’s Fall Conclave. The weekend is fi lled with programming, services, song session, meeting new friends while reconnecting with old ones. Youth groups in our region have the opportunity to host a regional conclave once every four years. This fall, it’s BITY’s turn! I am thrilled about the exceptional planning process BITY is already months into. Hosting a conclave however, is not just a youth group experience—the congregation itself plays a huge role in our event. Opening their arms and welcoming NFTY teens into their congregation and into their homes.

Conclave is a home-hosted event and congregants (youth group parents AND non-parents) are asked to volunteer to house some of our teens for the weekend. It’s a great experience for you (the potential host family) to get to know our great kids, and an opportunity for our kids to meet the Jews of Jackson. This event cannot happen without the support of local families.

As a host-family, your role is to provide our teens with a safe environment to spend the night, transportation to and from Beth Israel and an off-site Saturday night party location, as well as two meals (Saturday breakfast and dinner). We provide single-gender housing based on grade and mutual requests the teens make during registration.

Below is an application to volunteer as a host-family for Fall Conclave 2012. Please consider opening your doors to our teens. Remember, NFTYites are used to ‘roughing it’—you don’t need to provide them with their own guest rooms! They come with sleeping bags and are ready to crash on air mattresses, couches or even on the fl oor. Take as many teens as you’d like or can!

We only ask that you have enough seat belts for everyone in your vehicles and drivers must be insured and over 21 years old.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Traci Stratford ([email protected] or 601-956-6215). Kindly return this application to temple by November 1. Details about scheduling and the weekend will be sent via email a week prior to Conclave.

Looking forward to a great conclave in Jackson!
