Synopsis

“La invención de la carne” is the story of a trip with an uncertain destination; almost surgical description of an impossible relationship between María and Mateo.It’s a film made of wide spaces; the characters are there even though nobody seems to notice them. Tainted by a zone near to dreams. The empty spaces where the characters stroll and the minimum sounds create an unreal atmosphere. “THE INVENTION OF FLESH” is crossed by a religiosity lacking of God, the religious elements are repeated, but it is at the limit of human behavior where they discover the possibility of redemption from their own condition; an unexpected way of union.

Santiago Loza (1971) Biofilmography

He studied filmmaking and did short films and documentaries, among them “Lara y los trenes”, a short film that won Historias Breves, a contest organized by INCAA (National Institute of Films and Audiovisual Arts of Argentina).He wrote and directed five films: “Extraño” (2001) with Julio Chavez and Valeria Bertucelli in the leading roles, “Cuatro mujeres descalzas” (2005), “Artico” (2008) and the Documentary “Rosa Patria” (2008) won the Jury Prize of the BAFICI Argentinean Competition. As screenwriter he wrote “Parapalos” which was directed by Ana Poliak, and some theater plays that many of them were directed by local cinema directors. “Extraño” won the1st. prize at the Rotterdam festival and the 1st prize at the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival (BAFICI), among other 18 international awards. “Cuatro mujeres descalzas” had the support from Fond Sud and the Hubers Bal Fund and had been exhibited at several festivals. Santiago Loza had developed the screenplay for his fifth film “La invención de la carne” at the Moulin d’Andé-CECI, Centre for Screenplay Writing Programme Odyssée of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France.

“La invención de la carne” is the story of a trip. A trip with an uncertain destination. The characters travel across various landscapes and come across people without engaging in what is happening, with a detached look at what is around. “La invención de la carne” is an almost surgical description of an impossible relationship.Maria, the main character, crossed over the line of her own distress. She lets the least compassionate person she could find lead her days. Mateo is a young man who is a mystery even for himself, obsessed with what makes up the organic in alive beings, he seems not to have any human reactions.Maria abandons herself to him, searches for redemption in that human being, in the person who can´t save her from her deep hopelessness. But in seeking salvation, in that movement, that last strength, she will find the way to stay alive.

“La invención de la carne” is a film made of silences and wide spaces; the characters are there even though nobody seems to notice them. The image has an odd look that comes from the subjectivity of the characters. Tainted by a zone near to dreams. The empty spaces where the characters stroll, the minimum sounds, the water, the liquid in the jars, creates an unreal atmosphere. “La invención de la carne” is crossed by a religiosity lacking of God, the characters are devastated, the religious elements are repeated, but it is at the limit of human behavior where they discover the possibility of redemption from their own condition. Mateo’s primary search for fatherhood, Maria’s need for affection, the intensity of those strengths that won’t meet, creates the tension of the story. In that obvious misunderstanding, they discover an unexpected way of being together.
