“I have made enemies in my
own party”He is as well-known for his legal acumen as for his outspokenness about matters close to his heart. Ram Jethmalani gives a glimpse of his cand demeanour to Society in his characteristic style. Read on…
RAM JETHMALANI
The name Ram Jethmalani evokes pictures of a grumpy, angry old man. The images that the mind
conjures are those seen on television, where his vehement stance often makes it difficult for
people to get in a word edgeways, whether it is a journalist or other participants on the show.
Whether he courts controversy or it is the other way round is difficult to judge. “I speak the truth. And,
people like my free speech,” he thunders. Jethmalani can single-handedly keep the media and the
people in politics busy with his quotable quotes that he assures me are all original (not that anyone
can think otherwise).
But, meeting him was quite a revelation. Contrary to his image, he is not a grouchy old man,
vehement yes, but certainly not cranky. He smiles easily. A smile that reaches his eyes and makes his
skin flush, giving a healthy glow to his face. “I am a health aficionado. I eat very little and exercise
for half an hour daily. I drink a glass of scotch or brandy with warm water every day. I do a mix of
push-ups, yoga, I go for walks. I love to play badminton. I expose myself to the sun and fresh air every
day.” There is a treadmill in his office space and an international-level badminton court in his home
