D CTOR ASK THE A service of St.Joseph Hospital Q. I’ve been struggling with pain from arthritis. Over the last year it’s goen worse, and my family doctor suggested I see a rheumatologist. What does a rheumatologist do and how will seeing one help my aching joints? A. Dr. Syed Moazzem, Rheumatologist, responds: A rheumatologist is a physician who specializes in a sub- specialty called rheumatology. Training in this field requires four years of undergraduate school, four years of medical school, then three years of residency, followed by two or three years of additional Fellowship training. Rheumatologists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis, autoimmune diseases, pain disorders affecting joints, osteoporosis, and other diseases of the joints, muscles and bones that can be disabling and sometimes fatal. There are more than 100 types of these diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, back pain, and tendinitis. Many of the conditions treated by rheumatologists are very serious diseases that can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Rheumatologists oſten work with other physicians to consult on challenging cases. Other times we act as the manager of the disease because we have specialized knowledge of the disease process and the latest treatment options. The field of rheumatology is constantly changing due to the availability of new medications and new approaches to long- standing conditions. One of the most exciting changes is the introduction of biologics, which are a class of medication that modulate the immune mechanism of the body. There are a lot of biologics in the pipeline of pharmaceutical companies. Rheumatologists are very hopeful that the days of our patients suffering from joint pain will come to an end.
